I Need Your Help... Should I Fly My Puppy in Cargo?

Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, a TeamSugar user needs our help! I know Helly1211 isn't the only one with concerns about flying a precious pet in the cargo area of the airplane so I'm putting her question out for the group. She writes:

We'd like to take our puppy home with us for the holidays – she'll be five months old at the time of the flight and, since she's 14 pounds already, I know she will exceed the 15 pound weight limit to carry a pet on board . . . meaning she'll have to fly with the cargo.

I've called the airline and they've explained to me that Northwest has pet agents who are with the animal until the flight takes off, secure them in their kennels, make sure they have water/food, and be certain that pets are the last to board and the first off the flight. Also, their cargo cabins are pressurized, have ventilation, and are temperature controlled. We're taking a direct four-hour flight so there are no layovers, though there could be delays. Our puppy is crate-trained and is not scared of many things (fine in car rides, OK around loud noises, etc.).

With temps still reaching the 70s in SF lately, North and I have been taking advantage of the weather, and going for nice long walks on the weekends. You can pretty much bet that two out of three times, I'll forget to grab his pop-up bowl from my car, leaving me to buy a sports cap bottle in the nearest convenience store and play drinking fountain with it as he laps water mid-air. Although there's nothing wrong with this practice, I've found a solution I will never run out of the house without (unless I forget my wallet . . . and then we're both in trouble): The Aqua Bol ($6).

This simple, yet stylish water bowl comes in three colors, and folds up to the size of a credit card so you can stick it in your wallet when you need it. No more using your hands! Just like that cute vicuña, I had no clue what creature to expect when I opened these images of endangered Chacoan Peccaries. Turns out the pig-like animals feature similar snouts, but belong to a different taxonomic group, than "true pigs."Native to Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay, the animal was thought to be extinct until 1972 when the species was discovered to still exist in the Chaco region of Paraguay.

When LilPeaPod came back from her adventure with Samson at the Worldwide Fido Awards, she told us all about the great staff at the Le Merigot – where she stayed while filming the show. I know some hotels have a "Pet-Friendly" policy, but aren't too friendly when you check in. Thankfully, that wasn't the case when she arrived:

I was very impressed with the staff of the Le Merigot Hotel in Santa Monica, who went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, and treated Samson like a king – it was definitely all about him while we were there. Our hostess at the hotel café even brought Samson some ice to chew on to cool him down in the heat! Needless to say, if we ever need a place to stay in Santa Monica, we'll be heading back to the Le Merigot.

I'm a fan, Amanda's a fan, and even Christina's a fan. Now, we spot Natalie Portman toting her cute pooch across the country in a Sherpa, too! I have this very model of the popular brand because of its special flap features: You can roll and snap up the sides to let a pet breathe the fresh air, but then pull down the shades for some shut-eye on the plane.

It's also a practical purchase from the price standpoint as well – the Sherpa Roll-Up normally retails for $85 and up but I did a quick search to see what deals I could sniff out. When the only time your dog sees the car or crate is come vet time, chances are he'll figure it out! Start those unseasoned travelers sooner-rather-than-later with short drives around town. Instead of walking to a park, visit one a little further away. Take a mini-road trip for playdates or to pet-friendly shops. He'll make new friends while experiencing different settings and adventures that involve more than just the leash.
Word to the wise: don't wait 'til the big day to introduce the carrier. Leave it out in your home, occasionally put toys and treats inside, and open and shut the door to acclimate your pet. Lure him with a long lasting toy (like a frozen PB-filled Kong) when the time comes – chances are he'll be so excited about the extra-special treat, it will be a while before he even cares to escape.

I can't stress enough the need of securing a pet during car travel but I know many people don't have a crate or belt to strap in a large pooch. This totally sounds like something I would have done when I first became a dog mom, since I was kinda paranoid to leave him with other people who weren't familiar with his day-to-day behavior and quirks. It's no secret that I've got pets on my mind 24/7 . . . and friends love to pass along any animal information to me. It's rare to hear something I've never covered or even thought about but such is the case here.
After having an enjoyable evening at NYC's Red Cat, caligirlnyc suggested a post about bars and restaurants named after animals . . . and to have readers post about ones in their towns, too. Quick brainstorming brought to mind places like Mad Dog in the Fog here in SF or Fat Black Pussycat in NYC, just to name the first two to come to mind. Bare Bones: Aqua Pure Breed Water

It doesn't look like bottled water, but it is! And it kinda makes me wonder why anyone didn't think of this design before. You're looking at the newest bottled water to hit the market, and it's made just for your on-the-go pets. Called Aqua Pure Breed, this water is fortified with vitamins and minerals to aid in joint, heart, nerve, and skin health (similar to FortiFido, which a slim majority of you would file into the Spoiled Rotten category), but in an easy-to-use package shaped like a water bowl!

Gone are the days of toting around your water bottle and a collapsible bowl, since Aqua Pure Breed has thought of that already. Honestly, why hasn't anyone thought of this before?! And although the "bottles" are disposable, I might want to keep these around and reuse them since they are so portable. APB doesn't have a list of retailers on their website just yet, but if you can't find it at your local pet shop, you can have your bottles delivered to your home in cases of 48 for $60 — the equivalent of about $1.25 a bottle.

While my lil guy was off having a blast, I couldn't get him off my mind! So, when I was doing some shopping in Portland over the weekend, I was delighted to spot this sign.I totally fell for the puppy dog eyes and followed the arrow to an absolutely adoro shop! The Hip Hound stocks the cutest stuff for your pets from a kitty corner for the felines to a clothesline of gear for your pooches. The first thing that I noticed was the super selection of outdoorsy gear . . . I guess Oregon has some sporty pups who need things like hiking backpacks and life jackets for their own summertime fun.

I know if I called that place my home, I'd need to get North started on a super new cardio routine pronto 'cause he's got enough trouble with the hills of SF. I always wanted to work with animals and, when I was little, I may have even declared I would become a marine biologist. The Scoop: Walt Disney World to Open Pet Resort in 2009

It's such a bummer when you consider a four legged animal a member of your family, but yet there are some places that still don't allow them to roam around with you. Disneyland and Disney World are two of the "happiest places on earth" but unfortunately, the happiness doesn't apply to your furry friends. At least the happiness inside the park anyway! Although I'm not sure how appropriate it would be to take a pet on a ride, it does make me feel slightly guilty about leaving my poor pup in one of the kennels while I'm slurping up shaved ice!

However, if you're planning a trip to Disney World in mid 2009, things just got a little easier on your heart. Your pampered pooches still won't be lucky enough to join you in the park, but now they'll have a resort they can call their own! Word is, Disney World is building a pet resort that will boast such amenities as hiking trails, doggie day camp, cat lounges, grooming services, ice cream socials, and bedtime stories for your pets to enjoy while you're frolicking with Mickey and Minnie. I'm excited to hear more news about this since I'm definitely wanting to head back over to Florida after my awesome adventures at Aquatica, so it would be cool to check this out as well. Plus, it will give me a good excuse to go see Disney's Animal Kingdom!

Creature Features: Stingrays

Now I've always thought stingrays were cool creatures . . . and now I know it after I got to snorkel with them in Florida a couple weeks ago! That's right, thanks to Aquatica, lilsugar and I got the great opportunity to travel to Florida with other journalists and check out some of the theme parks in the Orlando area. It was super fun for us to see these family-friendly travel destinations . . . and all the awesome animals! On day one, we checked out Discovery Cove where we got to wade and snorkel in the "mock" coral reef and ray lagoon. While in the tropical lagoon swim areas, guests can touch and swim alongside the rays and other saltwater fishes. Lawmaker Tries to Keep Pets Out of the Driver's Seat

Sure, Rachel Bilson, Vanessa Minnillo, and Britney do it all the time, but driving with your pets isn't exactly safe.

The Desert Sun reports that there's a bill in the state legislature aimed at pet owners who let their animals creep into the driver's seat.

Assembly Bill 2233 would fine drivers $35 if they are caught driving with an animal on their lap.

The assemblyman who introduced the bill claims that "in an accident in which the car is traveling 30 mph, an untethered, 60-pound dog can cause an impact of 2,700 pounds." Maze also quotes public and private data that "designates pets as among the worst in-car driving distractions, along with eating and cell phone use."

Well, hello there fluffball. Whether your road trips are long or short, bringing a travel bowl is key. For those more outdoorsy trips, you may not have the opportunity (or desire) to completely clean out your pet's dish every day. These origami travel bowls won't take up too much room in your pack and come in a flat-yet-foldable set of 10 ($21). Out and About: Sprinkles Cupcakes

I've made no secret of my love for cupcakes so during my weekend in LA, Sprinkles was a must stop. With 20 (people) flavors, I was like a kid in a ~~candy~~ cupcake shop. And how sweet is it that they actually make puppy cupcakes with yogurt or carob frosting?! I was hoping a dog would wander by so I could buy him this treat and take his piccy while he enjoyed it . . . but, despite all the dogs I saw around Beverly Hills, there didn't happen to be any wandering down the street that morning. Boo. I knew this cupcake wouldn't make it home in my suitcase for North, but a new location will be opening at Stanford Shopping Center this summer, so I'll be able to drive down to the peninsula and pick up a cupcake for my pooch then!

Get Up and Go: Road Trip

Road trips are a quintessential rite of passage when the Spring and Summer months are within reach. As much fun as road-tripping it to an unknown destination can be, if your pet is riding along, her safety can easily be overlooked when the rubber hits the road. I can never stress enough how important a car seat is for your pet while riding in the car (since I've drilled it into your brains about a million times)! Even a travel crate or the super soft (yet totally travel friendly) Sleepypod strapped in with the seat belt is way safer than having your pet roaming around the cab which can not only be hazardous to your driving, but your fave pooch or cat can potentially go flying if you happen to slam on the brakes. And that's never a good thing!

I've rounded up some more food for thought about what to bring with you, safety checks, and what to think about before you hit the highway on your next road trip when your furry co-pilot is tagging along for the ride.

Before you go:

If you know your destination, research vet hospitals before hand, so you'll know where to head in an emergency.
Pack up your pet first aid kit, along with plenty of food, collapsible water bowls, medicines, and toys they might need in an easily accessible tote or travel bag.
Make sure your pet's i.d. tags are up to date with current phone numbers.
Maximize your time by scouting out your destination's pet-friendly hotels, parks, and beaches, so you're not roaming around looking for them.
Consider prepping a travel litter box, since kitties are fussy travelers. Stress can do numbers on their digestive systems.

Having a first aid kit specifically for your pet in mind is a good thing to have, whether you're traveling with or without your pet, but it's also a smart thing to have around the house even when you aren't traveling. Packing a first aid kit and leaving it with your sitter instructions should be a must-do before you head out. There are more important things for your pet sitter to worry about if there was an accident than running around your place looking for bandages! Just placing these supplies in a waterproof container or shoebox will do, just so long as they are easy for your sitter to find. What should go in the kit?

Bandages, bandage tape, and small scissors to cut it with

Get Up and Go: Prepping For a Sitter

Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, there are those times when you can't get your pet into a boarding facility. So, if you can't take them with you on your adventure, then you'll need to find a sitter care for your furry pals while you are away. If you're lucky enough to have trustworthy neighbors or family members that can come by to feed and care for your pet, then there are a few things you'll want to make sure you do before you jet off on your vacay, to ensure your pet (and sitter) remain as comfortable as possible.
Food:

Make sure your pet's food is fully stocked, and ready to scoop. If you use bagged food, let your sitter know which scoop you use to prevent over (or under) feeding. It's also a good idea to let the sitter know where any extra food bags (or extra cans, if you use canned food) are located even though you think you've stocked enough.
If your pet eats home cooked meals, make the food beforehand and separate meal-sized portions to prevent any confusion, and to take that duty off your sitter's hands.

With the weather getting warmer, I'm sure you'll be headed outdoors to get some play time in at local beaches, lakes, rivers, and maybe even doing some camping with your four-legged friends. North especially loves the beach, but I don't love what the sand and salt water do to my car's interior! Would You Use a Birdie Stroller?

If you weren't already convinced that more than just dogs could use some outdoor interaction, this has to seal the deal. Not only did we see a kitty stroller, but now this Pak-o-Bird Carrier ($349 pictured here) and fold-able Stroller ($125) combo is made specially for your feathered friends that like to get out, but you know . . . not all the way out. The mesh and nylon travel cage comes with a dragon wood perch so your bird can travel comfortably, plus it can be used as a backpack when you aren't using the collapsible stroller.

I have to say, I was a bit surprised to see this, even though I mentioned that birds could (and should) get exercise outside with their own flight jackets – I just never would have thought of carting them along in a stroller! Out and About: D.O.G. Pet Boutique

Late last week I got an urgent phone call from a close college friend. She was in LA on her move back from Colombia leaving that evening on her way to DC for work. Her continent-crossing pittie, Baby, is (obvs) too big for clothes for the pocket-sized pups but she was worried about the warm-weather doggie getting too chilly and wanted to pick up a sweatshirt for the trip. She didn't have the time to order one of these fun hoodies I found so I immediately thought of the best store to send her to — The D.O.G. Boutique (that's the dee-oh-gee, for those in the know).

A few hours later, I got a happy text from her when she was sitting in the airport – hooray! Not only was the saleswoman super sweet, they found an awesome pink hoodie at this West Hollywood outpost.
