This super-cute video reminds me of something recently said to me by a pal who's (let's just say) less pet-obsessed than I: "Dogs have been on the earth way too long, and they're still not talking . . . something must be up with that." Although I know he was only joking, watching how these pups seem to consider what their owner's saying makes me think they've gotta at least sort of understand something . . . like tone of voice?! Do You Know the Reason Why Your Smooshy's So Stinky?!

Bulldogs, along with Boxers, Bostons, Persians, and Himalayans (to name a few), fall into a group I like to affectionately call smooshies based on that unique face shape. They all have brachycephalic skulls – "brachy" means shortened and "cephalic" means head. This creates the wheezes, snores, and snorts commonly coming from their mouths, but also causes another unwelcome emission . . . gas.

Along with narrower nostrils and wind pipes, it can take a greater effort for them to breathe through the nose. Then, when eating, dogs with smushed faces tend to inhale (literally), not chew their food, and typically suck in quite a bit of air in the process, which makes them rather gassy on the other end, too.

What can you do about it? Pick up a bowl to help pets eat, and drink, slower and ingest less air.

Found! Rose McGowan's Four-in-One Pet Carrier

I'd have to say Rose McGowan won me over when she appeared in the Dogs 101 episode featuring Boston Terriers – I knew she was an animal activist, but I didn't realize how dedicated she was to my fave breed! She volunteers with Boston Terrier Rescue Net, helping to place pups, and even had two smooshies of her own. Sadly she lost one of her precious pals, Fester, earlier this year but I'm glad to see her bringing Bug out and about – how cute is she?!

Times, check. Caffeine, check. Super cute dog, check. It must be chilly in Manhattan cause lil Liccy has his fave jumpsuit all ready to go. Despite the fact that my pup would probably soil that ensemble, it's sweet of Famke to bundle her Boston up 'cause I know how heat (and cold) sensitive those smooshies can be!

With a name like Puppy Love, what's not to like? The scripted anthology of 10 short films discusses dog lovers and the people who love them . . . or in this case, don't love them so much. The first film features "Maya" (Famke Janssen) and her cutie pie we recognize as Licorice (playing a pooch named "Owen") – plus very vocal friends sharing opinions on just what's coming between her and her relationships with men.

Eeks! Now I've been called pet-obsessed by many – hello, it's my job! – so I can relate to this feeble defense and adoration for the handsome smooshy. I can't wait to see what's up next!

Do Tell: Is Your Purebred Ever Mistaken For Another Breed?

Can you pick North out of that picture? Although I consider myself pretty good at naming dog breeds, I'm always shocked by the number of people who get confused seeing my lil pup. He begrudgingly endures "I looove Pugs" or "What a cute Frenchie" at least once a week, but the funniest story comes from our days in NYC.There was an issue with my tub's leaky pipes so a plumber (supervised by the super) had to come in to fix them. On the afternoon of the appointment day, I get a phone call from my building's management company informing me that he could not fix the problem and had to leave because of my (and I do quote) "vicious pit-bull puppy." Umm, yeah, that would be North. In his crate . . . and obviously freaking out because strangers came in and didn't let him out to play!

Trying not to be outraged at the stereotype behind the "vicious pit bull" statement, I had to explain to management that I had a crated, 15-pound Boston Terrier surely hellbent on "death by kisses" and go home on my lunch break to sit with them while they fixed it the next day. Growing Up Samson: No, It's Not a Cage!

It looks like I'm not the only one in favor of using a crate! Samson is totally comfy in his little home, and according to LilPeaPod, sometimes even prefers his own private space to other spots in the house!

Right before I took this picture, my BF, Samson and I had just gotten home from a long walk. Normally, Samson likes to curl up with us on the couch and take a nap, but this time he crawled right into his travel crate and went to sleep! I caught this photo right after he snuck away to catch some zzz's.

He looks so sleepy! Are your pets more comfy in their small, private spaces, or do they prefer to sprawl out around the house?

Globetrotters: Meet True Blue French Bulldog Pups

When a friend stumbled upon these pups, he had to send the link to me! I mean, first off, they're smooshies, and secondly, they seem to be a rather rare breed color. I can safely say I've never spotted a French Bulldog with this bluish coloring up close. Utah breeder Bullbank has the five pups from France we see here — although they're not up for sale, you can see how cute they are! Even their names are absolutely adoro: Shooter, Dr. Dolittle, Azurro, Rhadamanthys, and The Wild One.

In the Spotlight: Is Rigby Too Good For a Collar?

Considering Jessica's toting tendencies, Ashlee may be taking tips from her big sis! Since Rigby's already grown bigger than Daisy, I'm guessing sooner or later (please, oh please, make it sooner) this lil pup will get a collar or harness (and tags) of her very own. It's not just the Simpson gals as both Tony and Pete get in on the dog carrying action, too.

While I prefer to let my pooch walk on his own four paws, if I was confronted with a great number of fans or paparazzi on the streets, I'd probably also be photographed with North in my arms most of the time – I wouldn't want him to get trampled, pull me off towards his new friends, or prevent my hasty exit. So, as much as I'd like to see these celebrity pets walk, I can understand the other factors in play to provide these great pictures to us.

I'm totally not partial to one pet (besides my own of course) believing that every animal is super adoro no matter what the species! But when Sugar staffer LilPeaPod sent me the link to Samson's entry page on the Worldwide Fido Awards website, I knew I had to call in the troops to help him make a big finish!

If you aren't familiar with the Worldwide Fidos, let me fill you in: You can submit videos of your pets in any of the six categories (cutest, best trick, best voice, owner look alike, most outrageous, and best dressed), for viewers to vote online. From there, the top six in each category are tallied and flown to LA for the televised finals. The winners are crowned in a special broadcast and get to proudly wear the title of Worldwide Fido 2008!

Growing Up Samson: Puppy's First Fro-Yo

The temps have been rising this past week here in San Francisco, and it looks like dog mommy Lilpeapod picked up some Yöghund frozen yogurt to help cool little Samson down. Frenchies are known for their intolerance to heat, but I get the feeling he's doing just fine by the looks of things! Lilpeapod says that Samson is now a big fan of Yöghund, and of my little guy:

After hearing that it was one of North's faves, Samson just had to have the Peanut Butter and Banana flavor Yöghund fro-yo. He wants to do everything North does!

Starbucks . . . check. Smooshy . . . check. In yet another glimpse of this adoro baby, look how big those paws are now! Guess the baristas couldn't turn away Pete Wentz as he carried his pooch along on a caffeine (or milk?) fix in LA yesterday – they were probably as swayed by her cuteness as I am!
I'm sooo happy to see a clearer, daytime shot of the first baby of the Simpson-Wentz family, although my fingers are still crossed for some Rigby/ Hemingway action!

Holy smooshy goodness! Meet Rigby, the 10-week-old cutie pie of Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz. Looks like they've given some thought to the breed choice, adding yet another Bulldog to their furry fam. We've seen how much they love their other pup, Hemingway, who played the supporting role of ringbearer in their May wedding, so the lil sis has some big shoes to fill . . . and big wrinkles to grow into. Rigby already loves following "Hem" around . . . and I hope we'll see pictures of both pooches together soon!

Meet Moujik, Pup of the Late Yves Saint Laurent

When FabSugar was compiling her tribute to the late Yves Saint Laurent, she came across a picture of the iconic fashion designer with a smooshie! I guess Frenchie is synonymous with fashion – Fab's got Annabelle, too. This dapper pooch is named Moujik, (meaning a Russian peasant), seen here at the private garden ceremony after the scattering of YSL's ashes by friends at his Marrakesh villa on June 11.If you're like me, you may notice that the pups in the first two pictures are different than the current dog – turns out, Yves had a succession of French Bulldogs, always named Moujik! If a country wouldn't let the pup in, then this revolutionary simply wouldn't go, once saying:

We are both set in our ways, with out foibles, but most important of all we have the same tastes. He likes certain materials – don't laugh, but the sound of taffeta being unrolled sends him into a frenzy.

Ha! I'd expect nothing less from this legendary man and his equally fashion forward furry friends!

If there is anything cuter than a gaggle of smooshy Pugs running all over a posh mansion, sipping tea, and showing off their super long tongues like in this month's Vogue Italia, then please let me know! Fellow animal lover Fab gave me the heads up on the cutie-patootie pugs, who are posing with the gorgeous supermodel Linda Evangelista in this high brow June spread. But pup models aren't strictly an Italian trend, Pomeranians are found playing in the pages of the June issue of Vogue here in the states, too! I've gotta start by pointing out how adoro this smooshy is! Angus the Pug – like many of the other smushed-face breeds whose eyes appear practically on the side of their heads – is at an extra risk for eye injury. The big, bulging eyes can easily scratch when those active pups get too close to something they shouldn't. OMG. North is giving me sidelong stares as I squeal over this cutie pie! Can you believe this is the same fella we saw from behind with Christina Ricci at LAX yesterday? I'd never have guessed her new pup was a lil smooshy . . . and I love him even more now!

Check out that big doggie belly as Adam Sandler gets in on Hollywood's tote a pet trend! Matzo looks a tad hefty and I'm thinking this was just a quick pick 'em up on the way to the movie set for Bedtime Stories in LA yesterday. Wishbone Just Wanted to Stop

I love smushed faces and I think Frenchies are cute clowns in (and out) of the ring. Last night during his moment in the spotlight, little Wishbone wished to break and smell the ~~grass~~ green astroturf . . . mid stroll.

This cutie pie could very well sniff some leftover mustard and hot dog juices from a past Knicks game — look how quickly he slams on the brakes!
