Do You Believe Pets Can Sense Your Sickness?

Beamish, this Rottweiler, did just that when his increased attention to a mole convinced Chris Tuffrey to get it checked out. The pooch kept nuzzling, licking, and trying to lift his owner's arm and it turns out the mole was a melanoma . . . and needed to be removed.

There have been other cases and claims in which animals have reacted differently around illness and evidence that they can detect cancer, predict epileptic seizures, and more. What do you think – would unusual behavior from your dog cause you to visit a doc?

Source

To the Rescue: Two Bathing Alternatives For Kitty Allergy Relief

I've definitely heard conflicting advice when it comes to dealing with cat allergies. While some recommend washing a pet to reduce the amount of allergens released into the air, others say that bathing will cause her to lick herself more . . . thus increasing the amount of allergy-causing saliva on her coat. Since coaxing a cat into a tub doesn't sound like fun no matter what, here are two other ways to combat this problem.
While having someone comb your pet frequently and properly dispose of the hair is a good way to limit the flying fur on your furniture, taking a damp micro fiber cloth and rubbing down the cat's coat can help get rid of visible dander and pick up stray hairs, too.

To hear of the product to apply straight to the coat,

Do Tell: Do You Own Any Breed Tchotchkes?

I don't consider myself to be an impulse buyer, but when wrapping up a business trip in Florida a couple years back, I spotted a whole kennel full of dog figurines at a gas station. This lil guy cost $6 and I couldn't resist!Even though his ears are rounder than I like to see in my dog's breed – the shop's version of a Frenchie was super chubby! – it totally made me giggle. 'Cause not only is he choosing to "mark" his territory, he's (ummmm) anatomically correct. Do you have any items that feature your favorite breed?

Do Tell: Pets Plus Your Love Life Equals . . .

While dating for dog owners can be disastrous, it seems sometimes new partners can feel like interlopers to the existing relationship with a pampered pet. Uh oh.I know most of us couldn't be with someone who hated animals (gasp!), let's open up and share the most pleasant and painful moments that your furry friends have created in your love life.

Put a Dog (or Cat) On Your Wall With Blik Decals

I enjoy incorporating a love of animals into my decor and these cute pups can be added to my household with nary a scratchmark. The sweet decals can find a happy home on walls, windows, floors (any surface really) and won't make your actual pets jealous. Each set supplies a varying number of decals based on the breed – and comes with its own story. The one behind these Dalmatians:

Birdy and Dottie Mae are the little puppies of Twenty, who works hard as a mascot at the fire station. Whether they're tagging along on a fire truck or playing quietly in the corner, Birdy and Dottie Mae feel content and adored. In fact, Twenty gives her babies so much love that a city full of firefighters couldn't begin to extinguish her affection.

That's too cute. Sadly, there are no Boston Terriers (yet . . . fingers crossed) but at least their smooshy cousins, the Pugs, get some love – check out the available sets when you

Control a Dog Remote Powered by Positive Thinking

If only training was this easy and noisy pups came with mute buttons! Imagine being able to pick up a device and get your dog to do as you please from guarding to fetching with the touch of a button. Sounds like a dream come true.

Umm, well keep dreaming. This Control a Dog Remote ($10) has a ton of commands but is powered by positive thinking only. Simply point the remote and hope for the best. I can think of some friends who would get a kick out of this gag gift, can you?

I already have a lint brush for my clothes, but this tool's shape is perfect for the quick cleaning of my couch (if I don't want to dig out the Dyson, that is). Want to know what prompted me to pick one up for 10 bucks on a recent trip to Target?
Got Fed? Find Out With This!

If North could talk, every time someone asked him if he was hungry, he'd yip yes. Problem is, I don't want an overweight pooch. If you've got multiple people in your family, it's possible your Sig-O, children, or even the dog walker could be swayed by that fake famished face. This neat bone ($30) lets people know if your pet's actually been fed yet . . . with removable stickers to place next to each day. Put it out of paw's reach!

Or, pick up a matching magnetic pad of paper ($12 for two) – each sheet has seven days and spaces for four to-dos – great to give to a pet sitter with information on medications or walk and meal times/ amounts. It may make leaving a touch easier!
The Scoop: Brave Man Saves Little Dog From Big Shark!

I've heard that when necessity strikes ordinary people can suddenly perform superhuman strengths. Such is the case with an Islamorada, FL man who decided to take on a shark, beating its head to get the animal to release his prized pooch, Jake, from the jaws of death. The five-foot-long creature already had almost the entire 14-pound Rat Terrier in its mouth . . . but thankfully, there's a happy ending.
The Perfect Complement to Your Dog's Whiner and Diner!

Wine is definitely my weakness and, even though I've yet to share it with my pooch, I love the idea of this cork-designed placemat ($4.50). It's totally perfect for my wine cellar . . . errrr, I mean kitchen (but a girl can dream). Not only is the matching treat jar super cute, I think this dish mat would look perfect with a Whiner and Diner feeder up top. Is this subtle style perfect for the wine lovers in your life, too?

Do Tell: What's Your Top "Keep Clean" Item For Life With Pets?

He doesn't get his muddy paws on me that often, but I have quite the obsession with keeping a stain-removing pen in my purses, desk, car . . . pretty much everywhere.

What people products are your essentials to improving lives with furry friends?

Once a year, the team invites people (and their pooches!) to enjoy a baseball game at AT&T Park. Sadly North and I couldn't make it this time, but next year, I'm buying my tix early!

Do Tell: Animal-Inspired Restaurants and Bars Near You?

It's no secret that I've got pets on my mind 24/7 . . . and friends love to pass along any animal information to me. It's rare to hear something I've never covered or even thought about but such is the case here.
After having an enjoyable evening at NYC's Red Cat, caligirlnyc suggested a post about bars and restaurants named after animals . . . and to have readers post about ones in their towns, too. Quick brainstorming brought to mind places like Mad Dog in the Fog here in SF or Fat Black Pussycat in NYC, just to name the first two to come to mind. Now I want to hear from you – please share your own local establishments with names including dogs or cats in the comments below!

Do Tell: Combining Furry Families With a Partner?

Now, seems like we can all agree about choosing to date (or marry) an animal lover, but what about a fellow pet owner? Although I adore my pooch, have dated a fair share of dog (and cat!) lovers, and enjoy meeting new animals, I'm not sure North could handle sharing our home with another furball. In fact, my friends joke that I'd come back and there could very well be one dog left standing . . . and that dog would be North – I mean have you seen what he does to his toys?!

Have you ever had to invite another pet into your home, and how did it work out?

Vintage Animal Chalkware Brings Back Memories!

I got very nostalgic when I found this month's Bark magazine to have a spread on the old-timey carnival chalkware figurines. My grandmother had a collection of these and I remember looking at them through the glass of an old oak display case. Given away as Midway prizes in the '40s and '50s, you really can't find many of these around anymore (except for Ebay and maybe a few antique shops of course), but I still get a smile on my face looking at the soft colors of the animal trinkets. They are certainly a far cry from the stuffed animal prizes you get at carnivals now!

I've listed a few of my favorites here, and I'm even considering starting a collection of my own! All of my selections were found on Ebay, so if you want to get your hands on one, start bidding now!

Hip Hound-Loving Wear: Dog Is Good

I'm not really the type to wear dog themed clothing, especially those giggle inducing "Dog Mom the New MILF" ones I wrote about awhile back, but I think I might be able to slip one of these on for a walk in the park. These bling'd out tees and tanks from Dog is Good ($27-$30) come in a number of colors, and I happen to like the sparkly studded design on the blue one pictured here.

Dog is Good also has a number of other accessories like hats and some super cute greeting cards. My fave is the one that reads, "It's all fun and games . . . until someone ends up in a cone." Hilarious! What about you? Would you rock a Dog is Good tee?

Pampered Pals: Hand Painted Cat Treat Jars

A tad on the kitschy side, I've always had a thing for hand painted pottery. Since I haven't seen a Color Me Mine in years – and I'm not sure my artistic skills are quite up to par – I'd love to just pick up a unique treat jar as a special gift for a cat lover. These jars are custom made so no two are identical and all work is done right in the artist's studio, with three paint applications to give them bright, long lasting colors. Check out some of my faves in the widget below – you can even have your pet's name added at no additional charge!

Do Tell: Do You Carry a Pet's Picture With You?

We recently chatted here at Sugar HQ how pet lovers love to share – and sometimes overshare – about their furry friends. I know I'm guilty of whipping out my cell phone the minute someone asks what kind of pooch I have . . . and could go on and on singing North's praises. While I don't carry a big enough wallet for anything more than the essentials, I've got a whole gallery on my BlackBerry. How about you? Do you have your pet's pictures on your phone or in your bag?

Do Tell: Does Your Local Coffee Shop Stock Dog Snacks?

Besides being home to several super cute animal shops, and pet-friendly people stores, I was stunned by the sheer number of places supplying a jar of yumyums by the cashier. While I can think of a few local spots that sell or offer pet treats by the check out, it's definitely not the norm. How is it in your city – can you get dog cookies with your coffee?

Pampered Pals: Hang 'Em Up!

So I've been thinking about how many leashes Thurman Murman needs, plus how many our pets own, and I just had to find some cute ways to stash the ropes, ribbons, leathers, Flexis, and more. Check out all my reasonably fun finds – all from Etsy – in this widget from just five bucks and up!

New Kitty and Pup Announcements Help You Share the Love

I know that 71 percent of you call yourselves "pet parents," so I can only assume you'll understand my adoration for these new doggie cards, which just happen to look a lot like birth announcements for babies.

The front side of Modern Pet's Dog Announcements and Cat Cards offer space for your latest addition's name, date adopted, weight, and breed. The back side of the postcards are blank, so you can include a personal note about how much you love your new furry friend. A set of five cards and envelopes costs $11.

Do Tell: Renting With Pets?

I spent agonizing weeks searching for pet-friendly apartments both in New York and San Francisco – it wasn't easy to find a place that welcomed my lil guy! The Dogs Trust offers these helpful tips for finding a home with your animals:

Write a pet résumé including dog's breed, size, age, activity level, and special accomplishments or training.

Get pet references from prior landlords, trainers, or others that know your pet well.

Offer proof from a vet of vaccinations, neutering, and any deworming and flea medications.

Explain his daily routine (e.g., visitors, dog walkers, daycare) to show how your pet will be cared for in your absence.

Have you ever had trouble finding a place to live that would also open its doors to your furry friend? Share your stories and advice in the comments below!

Source

Do Tell: How Do You Battle the Stink?

Let's be honest: sometimes our pets smell. And, try as we might to bathe them often and keep their bedding clean, sometimes that stink seeps into our entire home. P.U.! In addition to those standard air fresheners and aroma sprays, there are plenty of products out there to help us battle the smelly furmonsters like the Arm & Hammer Pet Fresh line with odor-eliminating foams, powders, and even a vacuum.

It's a bit overwhelming because they don't come cheap, and how will we know what will work . . . without making our house smell like a phony flower garden?! I'm curious to know what odor removers you include in your reek-wrecking army – so share all tips in the comments below!

Movie Trailer Sneak Peek: Hotel For Dogs

This Hotel for Dogs isn't a swank, professionally-run doggie facility, but instead one started by two driven foster children just looking for a good home for their pooch, Friday. With Nickelodeon stars Emma Roberts (from Unfabulous) and Jake T. Austin (the voice of Diego on Go, Diego, Go!), the duo finds an abandoned hotel and their imaginations run wild! Check out the trailer to get a sneak peek – eyes peeled for a cutie pie smooshy named Georgia! – because the movie won't hit big screens 'til Jan. 16, 2009!

Do Tell: Could You Date Someone Who Didn't Like Animals?

Newly single Mario Lopez recently told People that he could never date someone who doesn't like dogs . . . and I agree! While I've dated some guys who were less than keen on my hyper lil North, they eventually warmed up to him, but it still didn't make me happy. What about you – could you date or marry someone who admitted to be not too fond of the furrier friends? If you've done it in the past (or chosen not to), share your tales in the comments below!

Dog Mom the New MILF?

That headline caught your attention, huh? I bet it would even more so if you saw it on a shirt! I simply could not stop giggling when I recently spotted these words – on pima cotton tees. The Fleas Knees'Mama Foursome collection ($40-$60) offers other silly sayings like "Ghetto Stud's Mama" or "Mom-of-a-bitch," but I'm not sure I could bring myself to put that on . . . I'd be too busy laughing.

Now, since I'm all for fashionable designs for animal lovers, I love that the FleaGirlz have just one simple rule: "Friends don’t let friends wear shoulder-padded sweatshirts adorned with illustrated Shih-Tzus." I agree completely. Do you have a big enough sense of humor to sport one of these tees?

Gifts for Pet Lovers: Studio1212 Art Prints

When CasaSugar showed me these cute prints on Etsy, I knew I had to pass them along to you. Studio1212 offers over 50 different prints featuring feathered, furry, and fluffy friends. Of course I was extra happy to see a Boston included as well as mixed breed pups and exotic kitties, too! As they say, "if you don't see it, but can dream it, commissions are always welcome." These brightly colored prints would totally freshen up my drab white walls, do any of you have artwork depicting animals already hanging up?
Send Your Pup to Grandma's House in Style!

When FabSugar goes out of town, her squishy (and so adoro) Annabelle goes to grandma's house for vacay, and I know since Annabelle is totally hooked up in the toy and fashion department, she probably has a suitcase to herself to hold all of her necessities.

Which is why I think Fab (and Grandma) can appreciate this cute Sleepover Suitcase ($150) gift set from Arf Dog. The re-usable case comes stocked with travel style toys like a chewy newspaper, plushy cab, passport, scrumptious treats, plus a fluffy bathrobe and blankie for when she's ready to relax after a long day of play. And besides, it sort of resembles a certain designer that begins with a Louis and ends with a Vuitton, so I know it's Fab approved!

Arf Dog not only has cute travel cases, but gift packs for sporty dogs, puppies, pampered spa-themed sets, and essentials for a day at the beach. All of these packs would make great gifts for holidays, or pet birthdays . . . which is coming up for my lil guy this month!

Source

I just don't know. On the one hand, I love my dog's name – and monogramming his stuff – but I'm not sure about wearing his name on me.
Do You Talk Extended Family with Your Pets?

I've been known to refer to close friends by names like "Uncle Michael" and "Auntie Dionne," but I admit it sounds funny (especially to only child me)! And even though North's an only pup, I don't know if I'd call another pet his "brother" or "sister." Hmm. And all that brings me to my final example – my college boyfriend's mother would refer to the family dog as his brother. Eeks! At what point do you think this is going too far? After you take the poll, I wanna hear all about it in your comments below.

Pampered Pals: Droolworthy Doggie Towels

It's arguable what breed is the drool-iest around. One of my fave breeds, Newfies, slobbers a lot as do loveable Saint Bernards and the Great Pyrenees we see up above. Granted it's nothing a normal towel couldn't sop up, but what a great gift for a pet lover these funny towels would make. North is definitely too busy wheezing, snorting, snoring, and sneezing to drool, but he could totes use the bib style when he's slurping up his doggie "ice cream" treats. The towels are only $10 each – with a choice of nine embroidery thread colors – and just $2 extra to add your <strike>culprit's</strike> dog's name, too! This model isn't even sporting the funniest towels – check out all the clever sayings when you

As I've mentioned before, I've taken North almost everywhere and he seriously loves getting out and meeting people. But I seem to get a guilt trip whenever I go out without him to meet up with my pals for drinkies. And, apparently, I'm not the only one that has felt the pangs of guilt from their pup, cause now you can even take your pooch to the bar with you! Not just any bar — SkyBark in LA.

Although there are many bars that welcome dogs on outdoor patios (and a couple with dogs right inside), SkyBark is the only bar (that I know of) that was created just for you and your pups. You can mingle with other dog lovers over whiskey sours while your dogs play on the 3,000-square-foot "dance floor" and sip on doggie beers. The rooftop of Skybark overlooks the LA skyline, and seems like a pretty cool place to visit at least once. Would you bar hop with your pup?

Hands-Free Umbrella Makes Rainy Dog Walks Easy

So, if you hated that matching doggie 'brella set, there may be times when you don't want to pull on a parka, but don't want to get wet either. If your dog's half as crazy as mine (scratch that, a quarter), this product would come in handy . . . or out of handy, actually. Fresh from the MoMA Store, this Ryo Masaki-designed Hands-Free Umbrella ($50), is absolutely perf for walking the dog on a rainy day. The handle is made of a flexible rubber that can be wrapped and molded around the shoulder for easy protection. I'm not brave enough to try to carry a normal umbrella while grappling with North's leash, so I think this product is amazing – wouldn't you agree?

There are many dogs and cats that love to unroll paper towels or toilet paper (like our POTD B-Bop), and lilsugar told me about a great product to keep your TP safe from baby hands . . . that works just great for puppy paws and kitty claws, too!
Do You Buy Yourself a Mother's Day Gift From a Pet?

Now did I need this item? No, definitely not. But did I want it? Absolutely. I remember desperately searching for a reason to justify such an impractical purchase (white being not the most ideal color to wear on dirty subway rides or walks with muddy-pawed pups), yet I couldn't. I was about to leave the store and decided to call my mom to wish her a Happy Mother's Day, and take my mind off the skirt, when it hit me. I could buy myself the skirt, but consider it a Mother's Day pressie from my lil pooch. Admittedly, I've never done it after that first time back in 2003, but it seemed like a brilliant idea at the time. Am I alone here? If you've ever considered – or bought – a "present" for yourself from your pet with your money (obvs), tell me what and when in your comments below.

Gifts for a Pet Lover: Animal Cameos

These vintage designs remind me of family heirlooms but I'd much rather look at some animals than a profile of a person, wouldn't you? Every shell is selected and hand carved by master artisans using South-East Africa sea shells – set in 18K gold, the versatile creations can be worn as either a pendant or a pin. Check them out close up when you

To the Rescue: Help Kitty Love Him as Much as You Do

As the big day nears, there comes a time to make sure your furry family approves of your fiancé! While dogs most likely meet people on daily walks, kitties may be used to your undivided attention at home . . . which can cause quite the disruption when a newcomer steals some of her spotlight. How do you teach your cat to love the one you love? I've gathered some tips and tricks to help her adjust.

Food wins her heart. Have your partner take over some mealtime duties. Let him prepare and present her food and stay nearby while she eats it, gradually getting closer as she begins to get used to his presence.

Don't forget playtime. Let him play with interactive games like a feather-laden fishing pole or other toys for active, instinctive cats. If she can't resist frolicking around, chances are she'll come around to him too.

See a couple more tips when you

The Scoop: Walt Disney World to Open Pet Resort in 2009

It's such a bummer when you consider a four legged animal a member of your family, but yet there are some places that still don't allow them to roam around with you. Disneyland and Disney World are two of the "happiest places on earth" but unfortunately, the happiness doesn't apply to your furry friends. At least the happiness inside the park anyway! Although I'm not sure how appropriate it would be to take a pet on a ride, it does make me feel slightly guilty about leaving my poor pup in one of the kennels while I'm slurping up shaved ice!

However, if you're planning a trip to Disney World in mid 2009, things just got a little easier on your heart. Your pampered pooches still won't be lucky enough to join you in the park, but now they'll have a resort they can call their own! Word is, Disney World is building a pet resort that will boast such amenities as hiking trails, doggie day camp, cat lounges, grooming services, ice cream socials, and bedtime stories for your pets to enjoy while you're frolicking with Mickey and Minnie. I'm excited to hear more news about this since I'm definitely wanting to head back over to Florida after my awesome adventures at Aquatica, so it would be cool to check this out as well. Plus, it will give me a good excuse to go see Disney's Animal Kingdom!

Out and About: The Beasley in Vancouver, B.C.

I've made my way to Vancouver a number of times, by train and by car, and I have to say it's one of my favorite cities and is always a pleasure to visit. From their fab Stanley Park to amazing shopping (especially on Robson St.), really makes for a cool city to spend some time wandering around in. To me, Vancouver always seemed to be ahead of the trends when it came to sustainable living, and now, they are on point to start another trend for condo and apartment living: decks made for your pups built right into luxury apartments!

A 33-story high rise dubbed The Beasley, located in the trendy Yaletown district of downtown Vancouver, has a number of standard amenities that you would come to expect in any new development including a gym, meeting area, and outdoor patios for bbq's, but it's definitely the first of its kind dog deck that sets it apart from other surrounding high rises. Oops! From class to the library to restaurants, my dog is shockingly calm inside a carrier prompting me to bring him along whenever possible. I know I'm not the only one who does this – just last Sunday as I was having coffee at a café, I spotted a guy with a chihuahua on his lap (mostly hidden under a sweater, under the table). Now my pet peeking eyes may be better trained than most, but when I see those telltale mesh vents or side zippers, I always try to spot fur inside. What about you? Have you stealth mode snuck your pet anywhere – I wanna hear all about it in your comments below!

ASPCA and Chopard Team Up With Diamond Paws

OMG, how adoro is this puppy . . . and the necklace is quite a stunner, too. This lil spokespup is sleepily announcing the 11th Annual Bergh Ball on April 17 at NYC's Plaza Hotel. Last year's event raised over $1 million for the American Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), whose mission is to provide effective means to prevent animal cruelty throughout the United States. Put on this year by the ASPCA, in partnership with Chopard, the dream jeweler is helping make dreams come true by not only helping put on a fabulous fund-raiser, but also creating an exclusive series of limited-edition watches and pendants with floating diamond paws ($2,180 and up). What's more, 5 percent of the sales of this line – exclusively available at Chopard’s Fifth Avenue boutique – will benefit ASPCA so check out the diamond paw watches when you

North May Still Need a Sill Shield

While North doesn't show much interest in the closed window (unless we're feeding the birds), whenever I have it cracked just the teensiest bit, he loves to put his paws up and sniff that fresh air coming in. Now my window ledges weren't in the greatest shape when we moved in but, if I owned my home, I would consider getting one of these Sill Shields to match any window I'd have open.

Made from heavy duty, outdoor grade PVC, these attachable shields protect the surface beneath them, while still hiding the scratches better than painted wood. With three sizes of depths and three for widths, they're designed to fit most windows – and, starting at $12.95, totally affordable too. To see another piccy of my lil guy trying to get a good view from our top floor apt when you

Greetings Made Just for Your Pets

I have a friend whose dog is celebrating his birthday this month, and I'm having a heck of a time finding a card to suit the occasion. I've seriously scoured the greeting card section in all of the shops within a mile radius of my apartment, but none fit for a puppy's second birthday. Fancy that, right? Thankfully, I found Sincerely, Fido who specialize in greeting cards just for pets. From welcoming a new kitty into your home to graduation cards when your best pal's pup finishes obedience school, they've got almost everything in between. You can even find cards from animals to animals . . . with your choosing help, of course. Although they can't be found in stores (yet), with a bit of advance planning, you can pick 'em up online!

Source

Little Dogs Book Perfect For Your Big Coffee Table

Not only is writing about animals one of my favorite pastimes, but so is reading about them! Since I'm not always in the mood to dive into a "dog owner's manual" to satisfy my reading needs, I sometimes like picture books to gush over as well. One of my January must haves was a super fun read, and the book I found wandering around during my shop time seems like a great addition to my animal library. While at Z Gallerie over the weekend, I stumbled upon this cute book called Little Dogs ($20) with piccys of some pretty adorable pups donning the pages. Complemented by fun quotes from lil dog lovers from around the globe, you can have something to actually read, and not just graze over the cute photos. Although I'm a fan of all dogs big and small, if you are a pint-sized pooch fanatic, this book would look pretty handsome on your chic coffee table.

Found! Diamonds and a Dog Are a Girl’s Best Friend

I couldn't agree more with the sentiment expressed on this shirt – I love North, but I also love bling! The chocolate Zissou and Spike tee ($9 is 100 percent super-soft cotton with the silk-screened sentiment and Swarovski-embellished "diamond" ring. Regardless of your opinion of her as a pet owner, I think Paris Hilton's tee is pretty cute – how about you?

Gifts for a Pet Lover: Gianna Rose Atelier Dog Soaps

How precious are these pups?! Coming in such lovely fragrances as Italian Bergamot, Wildflower, and Fig – like these labs – to a sweet Lily, Mimosa, and Violet Chihuahua, the soaps are nestled in lovely packaging to protect their doggie shapes. The Gianna Rose Atelier designs would make a sweet housewarming gift for an animal lover – not to be used on a pet, of course. I know if I were confronted with one of these decorative doggie soaps ($21.75) in a bathroom, I'd smile but be tempted to look elsewhere to wash my hands – they're almost too cute to use! To see some of my favorites,
