I've definitely heard conflicting advice when it comes to dealing with cat allergies. While some recommend washing a pet to reduce the amount of allergens released into the air, others say that bathing will cause her to lick herself more . . . thus increasing the amount of allergy-causing saliva on her coat. Since coaxing a cat into a tub doesn't sound like fun no matter what, here are two other ways to combat this problem.
While having someone comb your pet frequently and properly dispose of the hair is a good way to limit the flying fur on your furniture, taking a damp micro fiber cloth and rubbing down the cat's coat can help get rid of visible dander and pick up stray hairs, too.

Vintage Animal Chalkware Brings Back Memories!

I got very nostalgic when I found this month's Bark magazine to have a spread on the old-timey carnival chalkware figurines. My grandmother had a collection of these and I remember looking at them through the glass of an old oak display case. Given away as Midway prizes in the '40s and '50s, you really can't find many of these around anymore (except for Ebay and maybe a few antique shops of course), but I still get a smile on my face looking at the soft colors of the animal trinkets. They are certainly a far cry from the stuffed animal prizes you get at carnivals now!

I'm not really the type to wear dog themed clothing, especially those giggle inducing "Dog Mom the New MILF" ones I wrote about awhile back, but I think I might be able to slip one of these on for a walk in the park. These bling'd out tees and tanks from Dog is Good ($27-$30) come in a number of colors, and I happen to like the sparkly studded design on the blue one pictured here.

Let's be honest: sometimes our pets smell. And, try as we might to bathe them often and keep their bedding clean, sometimes that stink seeps into our entire home. P.U.! That headline caught your attention, huh? I bet it would even more so if you saw it on a shirt! I simply could not stop giggling when I recently spotted these words – on pima cotton tees. The Fleas Knees'Mama Foursome collection ($40-$60) offers other silly sayings like "Ghetto Stud's Mama" or "Mom-of-a-bitch," but I'm not sure I could bring myself to put that on . . . I'd be too busy laughing.

I've already asked if you'd consider yourself parents (or if you'd buy a Mother's Day gift from a pet), however I'm curious to know how you refer to other animals in your home and friends in your life? I've been known to refer to close friends by names like "Uncle Michael" and "Auntie Dionne," but I admit it sounds funny (especially to only child me)! And even though North's an only pup, I don't know if I'd call another pet his "brother" or "sister." Hmm. And all that brings me to my final example – my college boyfriend's mother would refer to the family dog as his brother. Eeks! At what point do you think this is going too far? As I've mentioned before, I've taken North almost everywhere and he seriously loves getting out and meeting people. But I seem to get a guilt trip whenever I go out without him to meet up with my pals for drinkies. And, apparently, I'm not the only one that has felt the pangs of guilt from their pup, cause now you can even take your pooch to the bar with you! Not just any bar — SkyBark in LA. Although there are many bars that welcome dogs on outdoor patios (and a couple with dogs right inside), SkyBark is the only bar (that I know of) that was created just for you and your pups. You can mingle with other dog lovers over whiskey sours while your dogs play on the 3,000-square-foot "dance floor" and sip on doggie beers. One sunny May Sunday in NYC, shortly before North's first birthday, I was doing some shopping of my own when I saw a pretty white eyelet skirt. Now did I need this item? No, definitely not. While dogs most likely meet people on daily walks, kitties may be used to your undivided attention at home . . . which can cause quite the disruption when a newcomer steals some of her spotlight. How do you teach your cat to love the one you love? I've gathered some tips and tricks to help her adjust.

Food wins her heart. Have your partner take over some mealtime duties. Let him prepare and present her food and stay nearby while she eats it, gradually getting closer as she begins to get used to his presence.
Don't forget playtime. Let him play with interactive games like a feather-laden fishing pole or other toys for active, instinctive cats. If she can't resist frolicking around, chances are she'll come around to him too.

It's such a bummer when you consider a four legged animal a member of your family, but yet there are some places that still don't allow them to roam around with you. Disneyland and Disney World are two of the "happiest places on earth" but unfortunately, the happiness doesn't apply to your furry friends. At least the happiness inside the park anyway! Although I'm not sure how appropriate it would be to take a pet on a ride, it does make me feel slightly guilty about leaving my poor pup in one of the kennels while I'm slurping up shaved ice!

However, if you're planning a trip to Disney World in mid 2009, things just got a little easier on your heart. Your pampered pooches still won't be lucky enough to join you in the park, but now they'll have a resort they can call their own! Word is, Disney World is building a pet resort that will boast such amenities as hiking trails, doggie day camp, cat lounges, grooming services, ice cream socials, and bedtime stories for your pets to enjoy while you're frolicking with Mickey and Minnie. I'm excited to hear more news about this since I'm definitely wanting to head back over to Florida after my awesome adventures at Aquatica, so it would be cool to check this out as well. Plus, it will give me a good excuse to go see Disney's Animal Kingdom!

Out and About: The Beasley in Vancouver, B.C.

I've made my way to Vancouver a number of times, by train and by car, and I have to say it's one of my favorite cities and is always a pleasure to visit. Where's the Craziest Place You've Toted A Pet?

Now North is def a seasoned traveler and, I'll admit, I've toted him maaaany places that he probably shouldn't have gone. Oops! From class to the library to restaurants, my dog is shockingly calm inside a carrier prompting me to bring him along whenever possible. I know I'm not the only one who does this – just last Sunday as I was having coffee at a café, I spotted a guy with a chihuahua on his lap (mostly hidden under a sweater, under the table). Now my pet peeking eyes may be better trained than most, but when I see those telltale mesh vents or side zippers, I always try to spot fur inside. What about you? North May Still Need a Sill Shield

Not only is writing about animals one of my favorite pastimes, but so is reading about them! Since I'm not always in the mood to dive into a "dog owner's manual" to satisfy my reading needs, I sometimes like picture books to gush over as well. I couldn't agree more with the sentiment expressed on this shirt – I love North, but I also love bling!
