Did you know that the perfume industry has a reigning watchdog? I didn't. It's called the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), and its latest set of regulations will require many perfume makers to change their scents.

Attars are the world’s oldest perfumes, incredibly concentrated elixirs extracted from the juices of flowers, spices, and barks. They can contain anything from hundreds of ingredients to a simple, single note, sometimes distilled over years. Rose attar is probably the best known, but there are as many attars as there are fragrant herbs.

Due out 1st September is a brand-new exciting scent from Jo Malone. I always get especially giddy when they have a new launch because this brand has yet to let me down. I love that you can layer their scents, so I almost look at it as an opportunity to create something just for me, using a mix of their colognes as a base.

As part of DKNY's Delicious Art series, the design on the popular Be Delicious fragrance collection is a-changing once again. The most recent depiction features the limited edition DKNY Be Delicious Art Eau de Parfum Spray ($38-$70) and DKNY Be Delicious Art Body Lotion ($38), complete with packaging inspired by 1960s pop art. Artist Brad Hamann's cartoon-like layout features bold green tones and Ben-day dots on the apple-shaped bottle, along with comic lettering and speech balloons on the outer packaging.

This happened in Texas, the land of big hair, and apparently — perfume so strong it landed 34 in the hospital, made dozens of other hapless victims ill, and prompted 150 people to flee a bank on Wednesday after a woman innocently pulled out a bottle of perfume and sprayed.
At first, a couple bank tellers complained of headaches and chest pains. An announcement was made that anyone feeling ill could exit the building — prompting 150 people to split.

Perfume is so much more than scent. I love the clever packaging, the colors of the tinctures inside, even the goofy little trinkets that are sometimes included with them. But my heart beats faster when I think about the bottles.

I have not yet given into the e-book craze. I love books and the culture of bookstores too much. I'm especially fond of used books.

I have to admit, I was a little skeptical when receiving a tester of Pepper & Tanky pet perfume in the mail. But, after hearing about LilPeaPod's experience, I may just give my bottle of "Big Dog" a try next time North and I hit the town and don't have time for a full-on bath! She writes:
It was a rainy week in SF and, after a few walks, Samson had that "wet dog" scent we all know so well, even though I had just bathed him a few days before.

Last week, I met renowned natural perfumer, author, and owner of Aftelier Perfumes, Mandy Aftel, in her visually stunning Berkeley, CA studio.
With wood built-ins, glass bottles lining the windows, and apothecary style furnishings, it was a little Frank Lloyd Wright with a pinch of Harry Potter. Topped off with the collective smell of essential oils and perfumes?
