I've already asked if you'd consider yourself parents (or if you'd buy a Mother's Day gift from a pet), however I'm curious to know how you refer to other animals in your home and friends in your life? I've been known to refer to close friends by names like "Uncle Michael" and "Auntie Dionne," but I admit it sounds funny (especially to only child me)! And even though North's an only pup, I don't know if I'd call another pet his "brother" or "sister." Hmm. And all that brings me to my final example – my college boyfriend's mother would refer to the family dog as his brother. Eeks! At what point do you think this is going too far? As I've mentioned before, I've taken North almost everywhere and he seriously loves getting out and meeting people. But I seem to get a guilt trip whenever I go out without him to meet up with my pals for drinkies. And, apparently, I'm not the only one that has felt the pangs of guilt from their pup, cause now you can even take your pooch to the bar with you! Not just any bar — SkyBark in LA. Although there are many bars that welcome dogs on outdoor patios (and a couple with dogs right inside), SkyBark is the only bar (that I know of) that was created just for you and your pups. You can mingle with other dog lovers over whiskey sours while your dogs play on the 3,000-square-foot "dance floor" and sip on doggie beers. The rooftop of Skybark overlooks the LA skyline, and seems like a pretty cool place to visit at least once. Would you bar hop with your pup? Source

So, if you hated that matching doggie 'brella set, there may be times when you don't want to pull on a parka, but don't want to get wet either. If your dog's half as crazy as mine (scratch that, a quarter), this product would come in handy . . . or out of handy, actually. Fresh from the MoMA Store, this Ryo Masaki-designed Hands-Free Umbrella ($50), is absolutely perf for walking the dog on a rainy day. The handle is made of a flexible rubber that can be wrapped and molded around the shoulder for easy protection. I'm not brave enough to try to carry a normal umbrella while grappling with North's leash, so I think this product is amazing – wouldn't you agree?

I've heard that tattooing can be totally addictive – once you get one, you'll never stop. I have been with some pals while they've gotten their first ink, and I'm not entirely sure I could work up the courage to dive in. The thought of pain and especially the sound of the tattoo gun made me want to take cover in a corner somewhere! So when I came across some pet tattoos featured on The Bark Blog, it has me convinced that these are some pretty devoted pet owners . . . not only to get a tattoo of their beloved pets, but to brave the actual act of getting it in the first place! I'm a big fan of re-purposing old, beat up items and turning them into something great. Since Craigslist is like a big 'ole virtual yard sale, I can pick up some pretty cool furniture pieces and things I never would find elsewhere to add to my home. However, I don't really go into the pet section on CL, mostly because I bought all of North's things new and I haven't really seen the need. But, upon checking it out the other day, I saw that there were bunches of pet supplies either up for sale or for free. Additionally, there were tons of dog walker and pet sitter service listings in my area that I hadn't seen in the paper. When I first welcomed North into my family, I knew that I wanted him to have the healthiest lifestyle possible. Whenever I can, I make his food and treats from scratch, read all the labels on his shampoos, and try not to use too many chemicals around the house. So when I saw Eco Dog at my local bookstore over the weekend, I snatched it up pretty quickly! Packed with herbal remedies to common pet problems, recipes for a yummy looking meatloaf that I'm definitely going to treat him to, and some cool DIY projects for you to make your pet's environment as fresh and clean as you can, this book was well worth the $16 price tag, and I highly recommend it. Not surprisingly, I read through the whole thing in one sitting! The info is easy to understand and makes quite a lot of sense once you think about what is in those big name products like flea collars and kibble.

One of my fave DIY projects from the book is a natural flea repellent powder that's insanely easy to make and good to keep on hand. One of the points Eco Dog tries to make is if a bunch of chemicals is supposed to kill fleas, and warns against humans coming into contact with it, how healthy can it be for your pet!? Include Your Pets in Your Wedding Shower!

Since you're reading this site, there's a good chance that you (and possibly your new fiancé) have a pet. Combining animal families can be as tricky as blending each other's human families, both needing lots of love and patience. To make all the members of your new and improved pack feel welcome, include them in on your wedding shower festivities. It doesn't take much, but this way each of your pets can get to know new friends and family members that they'll be bonding with for the rest of their lives.

You know how I have been talking about how having a big and bulky fish tank in my apartment would not be the best idea? Well, this one would eliminate that issue . . . sort of.

The tempered glass and wood tank from Italian based company Lavabo, is built into your tub for ultimate relaxation. 'Cause really, what's more relaxing than watching your fish swim around their tank? "Boston Terror" Chronicles: North vs. the FURminator

With such a tough-sounding product name, I'll admit I was expecting the FURminator to work wonders terminating North's pet-hair issue. One local pet store has an actual TV playing this video of a man testing the product out on a heavy-shedding breed, the Golden Retriever, and that stack of dog hair was quite shocking . . . and definitely piqued my interest. Since I know that many of you crate train your pups, I am happy to tell you about this one. Crate Haven not only blends in with your furniture, but it is furniture! Doing double duty as crate and side table, Fido can rest while you watch the tube, and you have somewhere to put your drink.

Although some crates are more conceptual than others, this seems to be a solid piece that you can incorporate into your home. The bad news is that it doesn't exactly come cheap. The Harrison model pictured here goes for $600 while other models range from $450 to $1300. The trend in pet accessories does seem to be leaning towards smart design – from artistic pet beds to fashion-forward doggie clothes – so it's no surprise to me that it would extend to your pet's second home as well. The Scoop: Pampered Pets at an All Time High

APPMA President Bob Vetere credits trends in design and including pets part of your family to the rise in spending.

"High end products in general are on the rise, as is gift giving and new product introductions and innovation. The pet industry continues to grow at a record pace and the future is no exception. Pet owners and the companies providing pet products and services show no sign of letting up."

Once again, North is getting put to the test (well, his hair anyway). I spotted this product on a trip to Cost Plus, and I totally fell for the language on the packaging. "Revolutionary! Instantly! Satisfaction Guaranteed!" I was sold. Those were fighting words, and North and his hair were definitely up to this challenge. Now I just needed to figure out what to test . . .

North is not allowed on my bedding, definitely can't reach my drapes, and I already cleaned my upholstery, so I decided to try it out on clothing. I took a fleece hoodie out of my closet, put it on, and picked North up for a snuggle. Then I took it off and rubbed him as if toweling him dry.

Just when I thought I had heard of everything, I located pet trailers. I'm thinking of driving up to Napa this long weekend, but somehow still can't imagine dragging North along literally . . . with his own hitch. The Wags trailers are completely custom built according to your pup's needs and desires from carpet choices to sliding windows and solar vents. Although I see no reason why these products couldn't be attached to a car, they seem to be geared more towards motorcyclists. I'm not exactly a Harley type of girl (the chopper's noise bothers me), and I can't imagine my doggie would want to ride so close to it either. Even ignoring its $4,000 price tag, I wouldn't dream of having my pet outside the car, but am I just too attached to my little guy? Would your pup enjoy the view from back there?Source

Out and About: Arizona Animal Fair

Celebrate animals this weekend at the Seventh Annual Arizona Animal Fair! One of the largest events of its kind in the Southwest, the fest takes place in Tucson's Reid Park this Saturday from 10-4 p.m. Entry is free and all proceeds from the entertainment, food, and other activities go back to the animal-rescue community. Make your furry friend a star with Puppy Pawcasso or Glamour Paws Pet Photography, or get a holistic opinion with pet blessings and pet-psychic readings. There will also be a super adoption area with hundreds of available animals and rescue groups for everything from burros to birds, reptiles to rats. Out and About: Arizona's Hermitage Cat Shelter

Founded by a Russian Orthodox nun in 1965, The Hermitage Cat Shelter started out with about 50 cats as lifetime residents. When Sister Seraphim entered a nursing home in 1989, a board of directors took over the management and began adopting out the cats. The shelter is now both an adoption center and a sanctuary for special-needs cats, including those who are FIV and FeLV positive and cats with other chronic health and behavioral problems such as partial paralysis, neurological problems, blindness, deafness, missing limbs, and diabetes. This shelter is the state's first no-kill, no-cage sanctuary that helps even those felines that are not considered adoptable by other organizations. It's comprised of 4,000 square feet indoors and an additional 4,000 square feet of fenced-in, covered, outdoor play space for those fresh-air kitties.

Out and About: Louisiana's Cat Haven

Baton Rouge's Cat Haven has one of the largest feral programs in the area. Even though they were just established in 1999, they have already trapped, neutered, and adopted or released almost 3,000 kitties! This process not only helps limit the numbers of wild cats in the area but can also save hundreds of kittens each year from a future life outdoors by transferring them into the haven's adoption program at a young age. Cat Haven also offers a Fix-a-Feline program to aid area families that want to have their pet spayed or neutered, but cannot afford the procedure — through it, they have applications and certificates awarded each month to pet owners in need. "Boston Terror" Chronicles: North vs. the Dyson DC16 Animal

Hooray! I've started a new group on TeamSugar for my little "Boston Terror!" North and I are going to do the ~~leg~~paw work and test out products to provide our full reviews (and proof!) when we're done. Wanna know if that plushie will last for your tough chewer? Curious how long it takes a pup to empty a frozen Kong? If you have a tip or question, post it here — I'll look for the product and we'll put it to the test!

I hinted in my February Must Haves that we have recently welcomed a new animal into our home – the Dyson DC16 Animal. North hates the vacuum so I was curious to see how this weapon would fare in his eye and ear shot . . . and how it would perform, of course!For good measure, I emptied my hairbrush and his hairbrush and dumped out my dingiest day-to-day purse. I crumbled up a snack (yum, crackers!), pulled some feathers from my pillow, and cleaned out my fabric shaver, too! Then, even though North is not allowed up on the couch, I placed him up there and tried to rub him around (note: if trying at home, dog will likely hate this or think it is a new game). Yeah, just so you don't think my couch is normally in that state. Curious to see how the Dyson held up in my home,

Out and About: Louisiana's Hotel Monteleone

No trip to Nola is complete without at least a brief stop in the French Quarter – just thinking about the beignets and café au lait makes me drool. I definitely want to check out the classic Hotel Monteleone next time I travel there – this historic (haunted!) hotel has been pet-friendly since March 2007. In addition to decades of history and tradition, they now offer special pet treats and tips for your four-legged friends.

My other area favorite is the Loft 523, everything I wish my apt was . . . but, sadly, is not. Frette linens, glass and limestone dual-showerhead showers with separate Agape "spoon" tubs, it's the perfect place for me to blog away on a Herman Miller desk while little North rests at my feet.

Would You Bring a Pet to the Movies?

I've spotted a tiny Maltese secretly carried into a Columbus Circle theater and North loves to go to Film Night in the Park, but I can't imagine bringing bigger pups, cats, or naughty/noisy pets of any size to catch an indoor flick. Vienna's Admiral cinema has recently started a Doggy Day to compete with the new multiplex cinemas built nearby – for around $8 a (human) ticket, a pup can go in free and gets a blanket to make the seats more snuggly, too. I'm pretty sure this violates health codes here in the US, but let's pretend for a moment that it didn't – if you could, would you do it?Source

Out and About: Louisiana's Krewe of Barkus

It's especially fitting that we're spending this week out and about in Louisiana, home to the biggest Mardi Gras celebration in the country! North wasn't lucky enough to make up some craw~~fish~~dog gumbo, but I'd still love to deck him out for Fat Tuesday.

My fave dog-friendly part of this holiday is the parade by the Krewe of Barkus — the theme of the sixteenth annual event was "Indiana Bones and the Raiders of the Lost Bark," and took place last weekend in New Orleans. The krewe member pooches are accompanied by a human escort around the French Quarter and to a follow-up "pawty" in Armstrong Park — it looked like so much fun, I couldn't resist sharing pictures of the festive pups when you

Out and About: Colorado's Cherry Creek State Park

There's no shortage of wintertime outdoor activities in the state of Colorado. From hiking in the mountains to walking through town, it's a great place to experience that fresh mountain air. The Denver metro area is a must-stop for animal lovers with several easily-accessible trails and parks open to our four-legged friends. Personally, I pick Aurora's Cherry Creek Park for their 60-acre off-leash dog area at the southern end with room for running, fetching, chasing, and more! This state park also has 12 miles of trails including the paved Cherry Creek Trail which runs through the park from north to south, along with many other routes to explore with your outdoorsy pooch including a small creek for a (warm-weather) dip.
