During an uncharacteristic home organization spree the other day, I came across a couple of unused gift certificates to Williams-Sonoma and Macy's that had been stored somewhere they wouldn't be forgotten. Or so I thought. The next time I have the urge to shop, I'll head straight to these stores since I'm starting out ahead by shopping there.

Out shopping this weekend, I happily remembered a prepaid Visa gift card I'd received months ago was nestled in my wallet. I called customer service to find out if a pin had been established, because I'd had the card for about six months and couldn't recall setting one up. The Visa representative gave me instructions for using the card and then told me my balance was $95 — but the card was given to me with a value of $100.

Times are tight and it's important to know where your dollars are going! Not that I'm discouraging cash, credit card, or check donations to reputable sites, sometimes you just want to help the shelter down the street, not the nationwide organization.
If you're unsure of your local facility's current (or future) needs, consider a gift card or certificate to local pet supply or grocery stores or even office supply or home improvement chains.

If you're short on time or ideas (the clock is ticking!), gift cards are the perfect way to go. Some might argue that gift cards are impersonal but I disagree. You can give them to people you don't know very well, but they're also the perfect gift for difficult friends and family members.

Sometimes it's tough to pick out the right gift for that special someone. In those cases, a gift card is a great option, especially as a stocking stuffer. It lets the gifted know you're thinking of them but allows them to pick out something they really want or need.

Welcome back to my Buzz Gift Guide series for all the entertainment lovers in your life. Yesterday I had fun thinking up some quirky gifts for a white elephant party, so today's ideas are a little more practical.
Yes, gift cards can seem impersonal, but they can also be thoughtful symbols of appreciation for people in my life who reside slightly on the periphery, like the nice folks at my gym or the lovely sandwich shop lady who's been feeding my BLT addiction all year.
