Killer Whales Are Picky Eaters!

I have a good friend that will travel to great lengths to get the best sushi. Her favorite restaurant is here in SF (she lives about 25 miles outside of town), and she swears by their salmon and yellowtail. Little does she know that her raw fish obsession is one she shares with killer whales!

A recent study finds that salmon is killer whales' favorite food, and they will travel large distances to nosh on the best. Using their Ecolocators (creating an echoing sound), they can scan areas up to a half mile away to find their favorite King Salmon, which provides the high concentration of fats and lipids that these whales seem to prefer. I can see traveling 25 miles to a favorite sushi bar a couple of times a month, but scanning hundreds of miles of ocean for a particular fish? Now that's a dedication that my pal Yum could appreciate!

Hundreds of New Species Found Off Tasmanian Coast

I think this guy looks like he belongs on a Christmas tree, but this sea crab is just one of the hundreds of new sea creatures discovered off the coast of Tasmania. From crabs to starfish to octopus, these new species were recorded in two separate mile-deep voyages in 2006 and 2007.

Not only did voyagers find new species of animals under the sea, they also discovered miles of coral that is thought to be about 2,000 years old, providing life and food to many creatures. Lead scientist Nic Bax, a marine biologist with Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization talks about the discovery in a recent interview saying,"We know very little about the deep sea. Finding out how much live coral is down there, and how large those communities are, is very exciting."

I have to admit that a lot of my sea fish knowledge came from Finding Nemo. Like who knew that the ugly, glowing (and kinda scary) fish from the animation was real?! So when I read about other fish that glow down there in the deep, dark sea I was intrigued. And, come to find out, there are even some that glow in one of my favorite colors.

Although scientists thought that fish only saw short wave colors — like blue and green, which are pretty common glowing colors for fish — a new discovery finds that some fish want the spotlight all to themselves: they glow in shades of red! The finding shows that at least 32 species of reef fish communicate by glowing red instead of the typical blue and green to cut through all the other "communication" that's going on. Just like if you were in a library where everyone was whispering, these fish would be shouting! There's a bit of useless knowledge for you — pass it along.

This Italian made Moody Aquarium Sink is perfect for those aquatically obsessed folks who believe you can never have too many aquariums, or those who have the spare $4,700 to toss in for a truly unique wash basin!

But if you don't want to subject your fish to sink confinement – thankfully, there are proper filtration and pumps included – you can choose to fill the sink with sand to create your very own Zen garden. Either way, I think it would look pretty snazzy in a bathroom, but I'm a little worried about the upkeep. How the heck do you clean this thing!?

It's Migration Time – Cownose Stingrays Head North!

An amateur photographer from New Jersey received an unexpected treat on a shark expedition last July off the coast of Holbox Island, Mexico when a school of Cownose Stingrays crossed her path while migrating for the Summer. Cownose stingrays have a twice yearly migration, starting both in the late Spring and Winter, and can be seen traveling in schools of up to 10,000 rays right now in the areas from Western Florida to the Yucatan.

Sandra Critelli who snapped the amazing pics, says she's never seen anything like it before, calling it an "unreal image, very difficult to describe," and estimates this school to be in the thousands. And, although stingrays are poisonous, they are known to be calm and non-threatening when in large schools like this - I suppose there's confidence in numbers!

That's a Big Fishie Tank!

If you wanted to visit the world's largest fish tank, you'd have to go to Okinawa, Japan, home of the "Kuroshio Sea," otherwise known as the Churaumi Aquarium. Their fish tank is so humongous, it holds four whale sharks – the biggest fish alive!

Not only is the local sea life that's housed in the tank beautiful to look at, but the observation window at the Churaumi is a marvel on its own. The acrylic-resin window clocks in at 26 feet high by 73 feet wide, and almost two feet thick in order to hold the pressure of the water which is pumped in from 300 feet offshore. Don't the people in this picture look like fish food compared to these massive sea creatures!?

And I thought Aquatica was huge!

The Scoop: Fish Are Not Keychains!

Hold on to your fins, 'cause this story may have you seeing red! Waterfront vendors in Qingdao, China, are selling sealed plastic keychains filled with goldfish as souvenirs! The keychains are being printed with a picture of Huanhuan, one of the five Olympic mascots for the 2008 games, and being pawned off as unofficial merchandise for this year's sailing events. Not surprisingly, a representative from the UK's RSPCA says the little goldies aren't expected to survive in their confined space for long:

“The fish would survive just a few hours, and would be lucky to make it from the manufacturers to the point of sale. This product shows a shocking lack of respect for a living thing and should be withdrawn from sale. We can’t understand why anyone would want to buy such a thing."

Poor fishies! I'm surprised that these were ever allowed to be made!

When I first stumbled upon the website for the R2 Fish School system ($32), promising to help you teach your fish how to do amazing things in their tank with the instructional DVD – like score a soccer goal, do the limbo, fetch, and play basketball – I was a little more than skeptical. I actually thought I was being punked! But after seeing the little fishy in the demo video get his game on, I became a believer.

Holy Flying Fish, Batman: Fish Flies for 45 Seconds!

I had many fishies growing up, mostly little goldfish, some beta fish, but my fave was my one puffer fish that lasted six years! I was always intrigued by water creatures and one of my earliest memories of being blown away by an animal was when I learned about the flying fish. I didn't know too much about these guys, but I thought they were so awesome because they could do two things that I wished I could do - breathe underwater and fly! So, when I learned about a flying fish setting a new record of gliding for 45 seconds in the air, I was not surprised! I knew they could glide for good distances (up to 50 yards) and previously the longest time in air was 42 seconds set back in the 1920s, but I had no idea that they could even flap their winged fins to catch an updraft sending them soaring even higher!

Although the video is a little shaky, you can see a flying fish enjoying his time in the air as he glides alongside a ferry off the southern tip of Japan. Check it out below!

Hanging Aquarium: Cooler as Terrarium?

So, at first glance, this Hanging Aquarium ($50) looks pretty cool. Meant for your Beta fish (and as a desk lamp), the compact hanging tank is illuminated by a small LED light on top, and comes in two finishes to satisfy your modern or antique tastes.

It seems that this would be another great solution to solve some of your space issues if you long for a nice aquatic touch in your pad, but I can't imagine putting fishies in it! I think it'd be better used as an awesome terrarium. What do you guys think – cool or totally uncool?

Undoubtedly, there has been a few times where you have let your fish tank go a little longer than normal between cleanings. A good thorough cleaning should happen at least once a month, where you replace at least ten percent of the water, clean off decorative accents, and vacuum or siphon the rocks. Since the primary cause of nitrate and algae in fish tanks is due to natural debris accumulating in the tank, cleaning the rocks and decorations is key to keep your tank (and fish) healthy.

If you have a seriously dirty tank, you may need to attack in sections over a few weeks to prevent new tank syndrome and disrupting your tank's pH balance, by cleaning a portion of the rocks and decorations at a time. You know how I have been talking about how having a big and bulky fish tank in my apartment would not be the best idea? Well, this one would eliminate that issue . . . sort of.

The Moody Acquario that I caught on Born Rich has you soaking right alongside your aquatic pals. The tempered glass and wood tank from Italian based company Lavabo, is built into your tub for ultimate relaxation. 'Cause really, what's more relaxing than watching your fish swim around their tank? Taking a nice hot bath, that's what. Unfortunately, this kind of luxury doesn't come cheap. The Moody Acquario weighs in at a whopping $15,000 big ones! But, honestly, it's kind of weird, right? I've had some fish tanks in my day, but this one puts all those to shame! The Silverfish Aquarium is sure to wash that cabin fever right out of your pet's freshwater fins. This 60-gallon, six habitat tank allows your fishies to roam further than ever . . . and not just swim in small circles. I know what you're thinking: cleanup is probably as complicated as it is messy, but with superior water filters, the maker promises that cleaning this fish palace shouldn't take longer than any other standard 60-gallon tank. At $3400, I can't see myself getting one anytime soon, but surely this aquarium has a place in someone's futuristic (possibly geeked-out) home.
