Even if you can't spare a few bucks, one thing you can always donate is your time. And what better way to spend a few hours over the weekend (or if you're lucky, during the week) than playing with a few furry friends at a local shelter? Purina's Be My Hero program helps you do just that.

And it's not just about playtime with a few pups - when you pledge to spend time volunteering at one of the 7,500 participating shelters across the country, Purina will donate $5 dollars to pets in need. Hey, if Martha Stewart can do it (that's one of her first kittens), I think you can to.

Housecat Housecall Premieres This Saturday!

That's right, doggies aren't the only ones getting their own reality show! Stay tuned for a new show on Animal Planet called Housecat Housecall, where experienced vets help real families solve issues with their furry friends. I haven't gotten a sneak peek at the series yet, but I'm imagining it to be a bit like Supernanny for the four-legged parents who need HELP. Experienced vets including Dr. Katrina Warren, an Australian celebrity vet (seen up top), and her colleagues Dr. Debbie Horwitz and Dr. Stacy Fuchino, help real families tackle those problems we know all too well like excessive licking and unwanted early morning wake-up calls. This is Obi-Wan, the feline that will star in the first episode – he's a cutey, wonder what his problem is? Not all kitties love the camera like Milo, so I'll bet it will be a tad tricky to catch the cats in "the act." Housecat Housecall airs on Animal Planet on Saturdays at 9 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Sundays. They're looking for the funniest, family-oriented comedy routines inspired by a family dog or cat . . . and are awarding $10,000 for first place ($5,000 for second and $2,500 for third)! I sure can . . . and now's our chance! Dancing With the Stars winner, Drew Lachey and his German Shepherd, Luka, wanna get the word out that every canine can be a celebripup! They're inviting dog lovers across the country to join and show off their picture-perfect pooches by entering themr with Purina's "Picture Your Dog in Times Square". On June 19 all valid photos will be featured on the Reuters/NASDAQ Digital Tower Billboards in midtown Manhattan, giving each pup face time in one of America's most famous intersections.

Between now and April 28, log on to upload a favorite photo of your dog (or dogs), and be entered to win a five-day getaway to the Big Apple with your big (or little) dog. Now, I don't think I'll be able to travel east to catch North's photo but, even if you're not in NYC, you can still see the pups at the country's largest virtual dog park. What's more, real-life dog parks will also benefit as Dog Chow is creating a dog-park grant program - giving away up to $40,000 for the maintenance and upkeep of dog-friendly and off-leash areas. I already entered my budding model, so now it's your turn!

I often cruise eCoupon sites to see what kind of deals I can get on pet products, whether it's for me or for my pet-loving pals. I come across tons of things that North may not need but another savvy shopper would love to get her paws on, so I thought I would share my finds this week with the group.

IMPORTANT: Pet Food Recall

I am sick and tired of dealing with recalls, after the Oscar Mayer Chicken and the contact lens solution. Now 90 brands of pet food are being tied to kidney failure in cats and dogs. I believe in creating a fit family and that includes the pets!!!

On Saturday, Menu Foods, a Canada-based company recalled 50 brands of dog food and 40 brands of cat food. This includes pet food made by Iams, Nutro, and Eukanuba.

An unknown number of cats and dogs have suffered kidney failure, and already 10 have died after eating the affected food. As a precaution, Nestle Purina PetCare Company and Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. voluntarily recalled some of their pet food that was made by Menu Foods.

The pet foods that were recalled were made with wheat gluten that had been purchased from a new supplier. There is suspicion that this could be the cause, but nothing has been determined yet.

The "cuts and gravy" style products sold in cans and pouches are among some of the affected products. Consumers are being advised to stop using these and the others on the list.

Fit's Tips: If you have been feeding your pet any of the foods on the list, and they seem to have a loss of appetite, are vomiting, or just not acting like himself or herself, take them to the vet immediately to get checked out.
