Season 2 of MTV's 16 & Pregnant is off to an explosive start! In the first episode, we watched baby mama Janelle disrespect her own mother and then expect her to care for the newborn so the teen could go out partying. Last night, 16-year-old Nikkole shrugged at the father of her infant's disgraceful behavior toward both her and her supportive mother. I was initially horrified by the first season, but quickly warmed up to the show and its stars - even rooting for them as they made their ways as Teen Moms. Do you think 16 & Pregnant offers an invaluable education to its viewers, or is it just giving pregnant teens an hour of unwarranted fame?

Should Reality Stars Be Paid?

Good news for those of you who want a second season of Jersey Shore. The cast is reportedly close to a deal that would give Snooki, The Situation, and the rest of the gang $10,000 per episode (though Snooki should probably get paid more considering what she goes through in hairspray).

That figure is not nearly as inflated as the reported salaries for the major players on The Hills, but it still seems like a sweet price tag for getting smashed, starting fights, and rubbing bodies in a rooftop jacuzzi.

These are reality stars - do they deserve a paycheck? My first inclination is an emphatic "No way," but just think of their many late-night appearances or that viral Funny or Die video. With the ratings and pop culture buzz that they give a network like MTV, why shouldn't the "talent" get compensated? They probably bring in more money than some actors on regular scripted shows.

I have a feeling that this is going to be a heated debate, so share your two cents!

Summer's Over! Who Should MTV Study Next?

Last night the breakout sociological study that is the Jersey Shore came to an end. Our self-tanner is streaked! Never again will we be able to observe a Jersey Shorian in its natural habitat. Even if the show comes back - and it will - it will never match 2009's salad days that were devoid of all self-awareness. There can only be one Situation.

Jessica Grose proposes MTV take its cameras up the East Coast to New England. Identifiable by their dialect, often intelligible only to each other; an unhealthy love of local sports teams; and impressively reckless driving techniques, the masshole - who we were introduced to on last night's 30 Rock - is generally, but necessarily, from Massachusetts. In fact, you could go just about anywhere and find a tribe with these qualities. All they need is nonsensical pride in their lifestyle, and voila! MTV's next reality show is hatched.

What MTV Shows Do You Still Watch?

It used to be that MTV played music videos, but I'll try to refrain from climbing up on my soap box. Tonight, MTV premieres two brand-new series, The Buried Life and My Life as Liz. The former follows a group of real-life adventurers as they try to knock things off their bucket list; Liz is a comedy-drama centered around a high school outcast.

I can't say that I'm going to tune in to Buried Life or Liz, because honestly, I stopped watching most of the network's lineup a long time ago. Not that they haven't had hit (albeit, questionable in taste) shows - just look at The Real World, which has been chugging along for 23 seasons(!), or the recent pop culture phenomenon, Jersey Shore. That said, most of the programs only keep my attention for one or two episodes before I get annoyed.

I do catch The Hills every so often (I just can't quit after following the series for so long), and I always make time for America's Best Dance Crew - but that's mainly because I love to see break dancing and Lil Mama's bedazzled hats.

Shore Lines: Jersey Shore Slang

We were remiss not to cover the misogynistic mess that is MTV's Jersey Shore in December, but it's a new year and everybody needs a resolution. The show walks a careful, tan line between spellbinding and appalling, and last night's episode veered more toward the appalling end of the shore.

Ronnie continually emotionally abuses Sammi - telling her she has a "Fred Flinstone toe" and getting unspeakably mad when she tells him to "go f- himself." Then she blames herself for angering him! I don't know why I am surprised; both the girls and guys on the show continually put down women. You don't even need to watch the show - just look at their choicest words.

Creep: We hear this word first from Ronnie when he says, "I left her [Sammi] at the house to go creep on some girls at Karma." Then Snooki and Sammi use it too! You might think creep as a verb means exactly what it sounds like, and it does. But according to Urban Dictionary, it has more nuanced meanings: hitting on drunk women while sober or vice versa; sleeping with someone who's taken or hitting on someone while taken (cheating?); and hitting on much younger women. So, basically, anything creepy.

Grenade: When the blond women, who "don't even look Italian," come over and start a fight . . . at least that's the gang's interpretation. I'm pretty sure Snooki followed them out, but I digress. They call one of the girls a "grenade," which I thought was for her quick ability to throw fists frantically and indiscriminately, but not according to Urban Dictionary. It's actually a term for "the solitary ugly girl always found with a group of hotties."
Animal-themed words for women: Hippo, elephant. I don't think the Jersey Shore cast used these to mean anything other than bigger than average or, in Snooki's case, her. But, really, two in an episode?!
