Although geeksugar got a sneak peek at the California Academy of Sciences when she attended a video game release party earlier this month, she didn't really get to explore the facility as much as she would have liked to. Thankfully, Wired gave us a behind the scenes look at the high tech penguin habitat, and explained the benefits of running the facility on computers to replicate the light and temperature the penguins would get back in their natural environment.
I'm excited for the new Academy of Sciences to open this weekend, so I can check out what other animals are hiding behind those closed doors!

I was lucky enough to get invited to the Spore Launch Party which was held at the new (but still under construction) California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park last Thursday. It was the perfect place to hold the release party, as we were surrounded by science and evolution! I can't wait for the facility to open to the public so I can go back and check out all the cool things they have hidden behind those closed doors.

My sister, who's been drawing blueprints in one form or another since we were little kids, is currently finishing her second year of grad school at the architecture department at UC Berkeley. Since she spends about 18 hours a day in the studio as it is (I'm not even coming close to exaggerating), she probably doesn't want to spend her few free hours browsing through architecture books, at least during the semester. However, once the holiday break kicks in, I'm pretty sure that she'll be curled up on a sofa with a more recreational, picture-heavy architecture book in her hands.

Penguins are accustomed to cool waters with their thick layer of blubber and water-resistant feathers keeping them warm. But for Pierre, a 25-year-old African Penguin at the California Academy of Sciences, his feathers weren't holding up to their end of the bargain. For a strange and unknown reason, his protective layer of slick feathers began falling off, causing him to avoid the water and shiver on the sidelines while his pool mates played.

Poor Pierre! At 25, this adorable African penguin was losing his feathers. This created a host of problems for the little guy: problems swimming, feeling chills, and getting picked on by the other penguins.

If we were enjoying a nice meal together and I told you that the wine cost $90, would you think it tastes better than if I had told you it was $10? According to a new study published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, you would.
By using a new brain-scanning technology, researchers from the California Institute of Technology and Stanford's business school discovered that when drinking wine, the amount of pleasantness experienced was linked directly to the price.
