FrankTeacherNEW YORK (July 20) – Frank McCourt, the beloved raconteur and former public school teacher who enjoyed post-retirement fame as the author of "Angela's Ashes," the Pulitzer Prize-winning "epic of woe" about his impoverished Irish childhood, died Sunday of cancer.
McCourt, who was 78, had been gravely ill with meningitis and recently was treated for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. He died at a Manhattan hospice, his brother Malachy McCourt said.Until his mid-60s, Frank McCourt was known primarily around New York as a creative writing teacher and as a local character — the kind who might turn up in a New York novel — singing songs and telling stories with his younger brother Malachy and otherwise joining the crowds at the White Horse Tavern and other literary hangouts.

Vice President Joe Biden has been keeping a low profile these days. But last week he popped into headlines when he clashed with aides to former President George W. Bush after claiming to have rebuked Bush in private meetings.

Fatherhood certainly hasn’t made Matthew McConaughey any less bohemian-surfer-dude-cool, if his recent interview with OK! Weekly is any indication.

The more 34 year-old singer Alanis Morissette talks, the more I like her. She’s incredibly quotable and she seems to be revealing genuine details about her life in a way that’s honest and not just geared toward generating the most press. I could be fooled, though, since she has an album out that’s not doing so well on the charts and is writing a memoir that will focus on problems that women face.

Ryan Phillippe played the first gay teenager on television in his first acting role on the soap opera One Life To Live in 1992. He talked to Ellen Degeneres today and told her in an interview that he got discovered as a teen in a barber shop by a casting agent who asked him if he wanted to get into modeling. He did some modeling work and commercials before landing his role on the show.

Ryan Phillippe was on Conan O’Brien on Friday night to promote his new film, Stop Loss. Like his appearance on “The Tonight Show,” his interview was chock full of quotable moments. I’m not a huge fan of the guy but after watching these recent interviews he seems like less of a jerk to me than I previously assumed.

This category normally honors quirky films, often comedies, that just don't get the recognition from the Academy elsewhere. For instance, last year's Little Miss Sunshine was doubtful to win Best Picture, but was a lock for Original Screenplay. It seems the same is true this year as well, as an amazing quirky little comedy is essentially considered a lock for this award.

Hey all, though you might get a kick out of this Salon article on Hugh Laurie being the thinking gal's celebrity crush. My favorite part:
"Constantly described as "brilliant but flawed," House speaks to the part of us that wants to believe that we are so amazing, people will withstand our dread obnoxiousness to bask in our brainy, radiant glow. And his tossed-off zingers reinforce the notion that it's cool to be a dick -- as long as you're a quotable dick.

Heathers (1989)
Directed by Michael Lehmann
Written by Daniel Waters
Since POP posted some news about my girl Winona earlier, I decided to post a blog dedicated to my favorite 80's movie, and my second favorite movie of all time (in case you were wondering, my all-time fave is "The Graduate.")
Also, I think I remember hearing that some Sugars out there have never even SEEN "Heathers!" This is a travesty and I demand that you out-of-the-loopers rent it immediately, lock yourself in the house, and watch it. There will be a quiz next weekend, so I'll know (kidding).
