Why is this Puppy in Prison?

How can a dog mend fractured lives? How can men shuttered away from society find hope from behind prison walls? How can a disabled child be given a new chance at independence?

Behind the razor-wire walls of the Otisville Correctional Facility, lies the answer.

A team of puppies is changing lives forever.

Petside.com traveled to the Otisville Correctional Facility in rural upstate New York to experience Puppies Behind Bars: a program in which prison inmates train service dogs for people with disabilities.

The puppies give hope and love
Concrete and barbed wire does not seem like a setting full of hope, but seeing a Puppies Behind Bars classroom will change your mind. We watched as puppies taught prisoners the healing power of unconditional love and selflessness.

Behind bars and metal detectors, live men who spend large stretches of their lives in prison. Through Puppies Behind Bars, these same men are now teaching dogs how to unchain other lives imprisoned by physical immobility.

Inmates, clad in green prison garb, train Golden Retriever and Labrador puppies to accomplish a series of tasks that will one day help another person reclaim a more fulfilling life.

The puppies teach hard work
For two years, a puppy behind bars will remain the constant companion of an inmate and teach him lessons that will help him re-connect with a better place inside of himself.

There is a lot of work involved with being a “puppy raiser”. An inmate must commit to take care of his puppy 24/7. Many of the inmates freely admit that is was this lack of dedication and hard work on the outside that led to incarceration.

As inmate Edwin told us, “I didn’t know anything about hard work and responsibility until [the puppy] taught me.”

The puppies teach compassion
The responsibility is a serious and sacred one to the inmates, many of whom are serving sentences of ten years or more. What they get back from the puppy cannot be measured; a sense of purpose, unconditional love and a reason to get up in the morning.

By raising this puppy, they are able to make a difference to someone in the outside world. A disabled person’s life will be improved because of their hard work and devotion.

Inmate Sergio told us, “The other guys told me that the only way to survive prison is to find a reason to live and someone to love…with this little guy, I got both.”

How you can help
You can make a difference by sponsoring a puppy. Help give one of these service pups to a disabled child, veteran or adult. Visit the Puppies Behind Bars page to learn how, meet the puppies and go inside a training class behind prison walls.

Hi everyone. I just wanted to post pixs of my new puppies. My puppy is half german shephard and half lab. Her name is Adobo and my dad got her for me last week from the Humane Society. My boyfriends's puppy is half pit bull and half something else. (I'm not sure yet) In the last two pixs they are playing together. They're so cute. They were running all over my house chasing each other then afterwards they were sharing food!

Marines Outraged by Puppy-Throwing Video

HONOLULU - The United States Marines Corps on Tuesday condemned a video that purportedly shows a Marine viciously mistreating a puppy and promised an aggressive investigation into who is responsible.

Sources at the Marine Corps base in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, told FOXNews.com that they were upset and outraged by the video, which was initially posted on YouTube but has since been taken down. They confirmed there is someone stationed there who served in Iraq with the same name uttered in the video.

"There is [a man by that name] here and back from Iraq," a source said. "Whether or not he is actually in the video, I can’t confirm that - that’s being investigated right now."

In the grainy, low-quality clip, the Marine appears to throw a puppy off a rocky cliff while joking with another Marine, who addresses him by a single name as he holds up the motionless black-and-white dog before hurling it into a gully.

“Oh, I tripped,” the first Marine says as he throws the animal. A yelping sound is heard as the puppy flies through the air.

“That’s mean. That was mean, Motari," a second man, pictured with him in the beginning of the video, can be heard saying.

A host of Internet blogs and sites have circulated what they speculate is the dog-tossing Marine's full name.

It was likely that the named man and others were being questioned in the case, sources told FOXNews.com. Those at the base in Hawaii were very upset by the video.

"We’re all outraged," a source said. "We’re probably more outraged than the general public. I hate that it happened."

Earlier Tuesday, the base's public affairs director issued a statement denouncing the vignette.

"The video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine," said Major Chris Perrine. "This video came to our attention this morning, and we have initiated an investigation. We do not tolerate this type of behavior and will take appropriate action."

Soon after the uproar started Tuesday, YouTube removed the video from its site on the grounds that it violated content rules - though it was still accessible and available via other links online.

The authenticity of the clip, which has been viewed more than 145,000 times since it was uploaded to YouTube in the last two days, has not been verified.

Perrine said it appears that the man in the video is a lance corporal based with a unit in the Hawaiian islands. His actions weren't characteristic of those of most men and women who serve, the spokesman said.

"The vast majority of Marines conduct their duties in an honorable manner that brings great credit upon the Marine Corps and the United States," said Perrine. "There have been numerous stories of Marines adopting pets and bringing them home from Iraq or helping to arrange life-saving medical care for Iraqi children.

"Those are the stories that exemplify what we stand for and how most Marines behave."

"It's questionable," sources told FOXNews.com. "But even if it was a fake, it's still outrageous."

Forum members and bloggers have been frantically trying to track down details of the soldier.

"Certainly there's a lot of outrage and a lot of people are upset about it. I think every Marine is upset about this video," Perrine said. “We will investigate and take appropriate action and make sure our Marine is safe as well.

"That is mistreatment of a puppy. That is a violation of anybody's standards, and the Marine Corps sets extremely high standards."

Fox News
Puppy + Boyfriend's Mother = Disaster

Okay. Thank goodness I have a place to vent because I am SERIOUSLY angry right now.

I have a beautiful puppy whom I love and I take very good care of. He is on a specific bathroom and eating schedule because I work, and I need for him to "go" before I leave in the morning and when I come home at night. My boyfriend (whom I live with)'s mother adores him, which is great. The problem? She doesn't keep him on his schedule when she has him, she feeds him people food (although I don't mind scraps, I'm talking BOWLS FULL of people food--more food than he eats in one day, rice, pork chops, carrots, bacon, you name it), and then she gives him back and he's pooping his little heart out at all hours of the day and night.

My solution was to not let her have him. I've calmly explained to my boyfriend that it's not relaxing for me to go away when she has the dog, because I know that I'm going to come home to cleaning up poop all day and night and having to essentially retrain him. (Part of me getting the dog was the fact that my boyfriend made it clear he didn't want one, and that although he would help me when he could he was not responsible for him, which I was fine with).

Now, we're going away over Memorial Day weekend, and I'm leaving the puppy with MY mother (who keeps him fed and bathroom trained). His mother is very disappointed that she's not getting him--even though we've both explained to her WHY that is--so I volunteered that the next time she has a day off of work, she could take him. They live right near me, so I was able to go say hi on my lunch break, and sure enough, nothing has changed. People food in a bowl and wee-wee mats (which I took him off of months ago) in the corner.

WHAT DO I DO?!! How do I handle this? My boyfriend has taken my side and explained to her what she needs to do, but he won't go the extra step and say she can't have the dog ever. I should mention, their family dog died this past summer and I know she wants a puppy of her own, so I feel badly for her. The awful thing is, I absolutely love this woman otherwise. I just feel she puts me in a really awful position where I have to take a stand against my boyfriend's mother, and I feel guilty..and I don't know what to do. Please help.

We got a puppy yesterday!!!

I had mentioned that we were busy yesterday and I wanted to let you all know why we were busy.

We got a new puppy yesterday! His name is Crosby and he is a Small Munsterlander. For those who have never heard of the breed, it's a German breed that excels at birds and small upland game. Not only will this dog point the birds, he will also retrieve them. Bonus! As soon as hubby finds the digital camera I will add pictures.

In the mean time, here's a link to the kennel's page about him: http://www.krystalcreekkennels.com/index_files/Page1237.htm

Crosby looking away

Crosby and Sergei's back end
