Krugman comes around?
In reading Paul Krugman, it's important to resist Broderism, or centrism for its own sake. For example, his saying harsh things about the Republicans, or arguing that the stimulus package needs to be much bigger than the political consensus has it, sound "extreme" in the standard Washington framework, but ought to be evaluated straight on the merits, where they often prove more convincing than the "reasonable" competition.

The Center-Right Trap
The limits of ideology in politics.
by Gary Andres
Senator Arlen Specter's party switch last week rekindled the long-smoldering debate about the Republican party's future. For many, his high-profile defection is more evidence that the GOP is destined for a fiery demise.

What Non-political Looks Like [Hans A. von Spakovsky]
Democrats complained endlessly about the supposed “politicization” of the Bush Justice Department. When asked about this at his confirmation hearing, Eric Holder piously pledged that his Justice Department would “serve justice” and “not the fleeting interests of any political party.” America, he intoned, was “in dire need of a less political and more independent Justice Department.”
But an e-mail and flyer recently circulated to Justice Department employees indicate Attorney General Holder has an interesting definition of what it means to be “less political.” The flyer invites all employees to attend a speech in the main Justice building on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Obama's Push for Health Care Reform May Use Up His Political Capital
The shift in public tone toward President Obama and his agenda raises fresh questions about the political capital he is expending to push through his top domestic priority, especially after he scored a hard-fought victory to get his $787 billion stimulus package passed.
Barack Obama promised on the campaign trail to change Washington if elected president, and he rode a wave of support based partly on that pledge all the way to the White House.
But change doesn't come cheap, and securing health care reform may wind up costing him much of that support -- known in Washington as political capital.

Political Greed
By Jim DeMint
"Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction," Ronald Reagan said in 1967. "It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people." This month we launch a new column -- Freedom Watch -- in which prominent political figures comment on matters connected to this great Reaganite theme, which is being challenged in ways even Reagan may not have anticipated.

The “Bitch” and the “Ditz”
How the Year of the Woman reinforced the two most pernicious sexist stereotypes and actually set women back.
By Amanda Fortini/NY Times
Published Nov 16, 2008
In the past few weeks, Sarah Palin has been variously described as a diva who engaged in paperwork-throwing tantrums, a shopaholic who spent $150,000 on clothing, a seductress who provocatively welcomed staffers while wearing only a towel, and a “whack-job”—contemporary code for hysteric. Worse, she was accused by a suspiciously gleeful Fox News reporter named Carl Cameron of not knowing Africa was a continent, of being unable to name the members of NAFTA, indeed of being unable to name the countries of North America at all.
