Is the weather outside still frightful wherever you live? Since the snow and cold isn't leaving anytime soon, I asked all you savvy shoppers and Internet researchers to come PetMarking for cozy sweaters for our furry friends!

To the Rescue: Does My Dog Need a Jacket?

I admit there's plenty of fashionable (and bizarre) dog clothing out there, but here's one of the most common questions I get: "Dogs have fur, isn't it silly to put anything else on them?" Well, the answer I give without fail is vague, but true: It depends. While a Samoyed in Minnesota may not need a heavy coat, it's possible that a Chihuahua may need one on a chilly night in the Valley. As a general guideline, smaller dogs with shorter coats will be more likely to need that extra layer than a larger, long-haired pet.
The best way to tell what your animal needs is to watch his behavior. If your Italian Greyhound is shivering or trying to enter every open door on his evening walk around the city, chances are, he'd appreciate an extra layer. Remember, more activity makes your pets warmer just like running will make you break into a sweat faster than a leisurely stroll, so a pup sitting outside will get colder than when chasing his pals around a NYC dog park. Use your judgment and don't let anyone else decide for you.

Last week I asked all you savvy shoppers and Internet researchers out there to come PetMarking with me and help me locate the cutest, coziest pet sweaters on the market. I know some people shy away from dressing up their furry friends, but many small, short-haired dogs shiver and shake when venturing outside in the wintertime and do benefit from an extra layer. The results of the mission are as toasty and cozy as they are cute. I can't help but adore the Collegiate Stripe Sweater and Wool Pom Pom Sweater that gruaig_rua found at Muttropolis and the Pink Fuzzy Cat Sweater that MandyJoBo shared with us.

Cozy sweaters for pets don't just come from animal shops – this adorable sweater is from Banana Republic! Gap, Old Navy, Burberry, and other human stores all stock pet clothing and accessories . . . even J. Crew offers a new Crewmutts line to keep little pets warm during the winter months. While some dogs are used to inclement weather, others, including many small, short-haired dogs shiver and shake when venturing outside in the wintertime. During our cold months in New York, adventure-loving North would quickly try to run back in the building door before it shut if I tried to take him for a walk! For those pet owners who have doggies (or kitties) that are especially sensitive to the chill, let's look for some cozy sweaters to help them out!

Does Your Dog Have an Ugly Sweater?

I've heard about those ugly sweater parties, but I've never actually been to one. However, when I learned about Petfinder's Ugly Sweater Contest for dogs, I was intrigued. 'Cause North is totally photogenic and I'd much rather make him look foolish than myself any day!

Don't worry if your furry friend doesn't have an ugly sweater, you can also submit a photo of your pet's "winter digs" and enter the contest by Sunday, Nov. 23. The winner will get his (or her) very own e-card on Petfinder.com!

Trend Setters: Crewmutts Get True Blue For Fall

Brrr, can you feel that nip in the air? I know North can so I want my peppy, preppy pup to take advantage of furry Fall fashions – cooler colors and warm knits. This season's Crewmutts (from J. Crew) line now offers some great blue totes, textured sweaters, and darker madras styles. You may recall their summery madras of seasons past, but the latest versions also have a removable sherpa lining for additional warm cozies heading straight into Winter.

Out and About: Rhode Island's Park Ave Puppy's

At first glance, these sweaters may appear to be for babies! Fall and winter in Rhode Island, or anywhere in New England for that matter, can be super chilly. Many pet shops in Providence stock their shelves with handknit sweaters and coats that are pretty enough for people. If your pup shivers on his walks, that's a good reason to put a sweater on the lil' guy in colder temps. Park Ave Puppy's (you may recall the store from when it was featured on TLC's While You Were Out) carries some of the cutest doggie outerwear around, many of which are handmade designs. Lucky for you non-natives, they also have an online boutique where you can order some of their items –including these two sweaters – shipped straight to your doorstep.

Pampered Pals: Wailea Collar and Lead

Since we're ramping up for Spring, what better way to do it than adorn our pups – and ourselves – with flowers? I know I'm so over the dark colors and bulky sweaters of Winter, and I think North is pretty happy about it too – since he's far from a snow bunny. Imagine my excitement when I came across the Wailea Collar and Lead Set ($66) seen here from the hip 26 Bars and A Band.

It definitely reminded me of a vacay in the islands, which is a great change from the soggy weather we've been having lately. These suede stitched collars and leads, in either pink or chocolate, are accented with detachable orchids that you can place anywhere. Both to suit your taste, and to make sure one doesn't "accidentally" get too close to your pup's mouth! I've seen a lot of leads in my day, but this is the nicest I've seen made of suede, and I've gotta say, the chic, textured collar would look pretty awesome on Annabelle! Now if only I could make the real Spring flowers bloom sooner . . .
