Spotted! Baby Western Screech Owls

This pretty picture and post comes to us from the Spotted! group from member lauren.

I don't own an animal but thankfully where I live has great wildlife including deer (that love to eat all of my flowers on my deck), birds, raccoons and my all time favorite animal that I spotted was baby Western Screech Owls. They spent the entire summer in a huge oak tree just outside of my house. I don't see them anymore but I can still hear them hoo'ing! This picture was taking about 5 feet away from them while they were learning to fly!

There's lots of fun stuff going on in our community so come play and don't forget to enter your own cute photo captures about town to our Spotted! group - it may be picked as a Site of the Week on PetSugar!

Native to South, Central, and southwestern North America, Coatis are cute chattering creatures. If you've ever spotted one in the wild or at a local zoo, learn a lil something more about the mammals in this slideshow stuffed with the raccoon's day playing cousin.

They're Ba-aack - World's Smallest Rabbits Fight Extinction

Yes, all baby bunnies are small but this species tops out at less than a pound . . . fully grown. The Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbits are native to the Pacific Northwest and face an uphill battle since being declared extinct in the 1990s. Learn all about these animals - and see more pics - when you start the slideshow.

How Do Pygmy Hippos Measure Up to Nile Hippos?

Obviously the Pygmy hippos are much smaller (and rarer), but exactly how much smaller and rarer? Find out when you take this quiz!
Jonathan Adler's New Pottery Collection Is Totally Wild

His line of place card holders, pottery, salt and pepper shakers and lamps made in the likeness of whales, penguins, giraffes and hippos is right up my alley - it's all wild, baby! These goodies are available for purchase on his website ($18-$700) now, but if we're really lucky, we may see a few of the items on the shelves at Target. I'm pretty sure I've already seen the bull place card holder and snail napkin ring there already. Although the dachshund up there on top can't be considered a wild animal, he sure could use some love. Just look at that swaying back!

Cancer Deadly to Humans and Wild Animals Alike

It's heartbreaking enough to see your furry friends go through the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, but imagine being a wild animal and not having the medical care or love that a family pet would. Cancer not only affects people and pets, but wild animals as well. A new study conducted by the Wildlife Conservation Society shows that cancer accounts for 10 percent of human deaths, and wild animals are dying from cancer at about the same rate.

And although you may want to wish away these similarities as a natural occurrence, take in this fact first: high levels of a chemical called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are found in the St. Lawrence river system, where beluga whales and many species of fish are frequently found hunting for food. Studies show that this (human-produced) pollutant is the leading cause of intestinal cancer in the beluga whale population. Coincidence? I'm not so sure about that. Although there isn't much you can do to monitor signs of cancer in wild animals from your home, you can keep an eye out for common signs of cancer in your pets!

Quiz: A Group of Animals by Any Other Name . . .

It'd be too easy if I stuck with herds and flocks, so see if you can match the less predictable group name with the corresponding animals inside. From muster to murder, get started now!

These Zoo Babies Walk Within 30 Minutes and Outrun Humans at Four Days

The very rare Peninsular pronghorn duo is only the second set born in the U.S. ever (remember the first set here). Not only do they have super big ears, they also have super speedy feet – pronghorns are the second fastest animal on Earth – next to the African cheetahs – in short distance running. Within 30 minutes of birth, babes are already taking first steps and, within four days, these antelopes can outrun humans. What's next? Adults can run up to 70 miles-per-hour and maintain a speed of 40 to 60 mph without showing any signs of distress for over an hour. Whoa!
