North is six years old and it's high time for him to get a taste of our political system! Now I've already found a couple ways for him to rock (and eat) the vote, so I may just bring him along to the local fire station polling place next week. Furry Demonstration: What Is Prop 2?

The fourth of November isn't just the day that we elect a new President, but it's also a day when we get to voice our opinions on a batch of new bills, propositions, and laws in our respective states. For those of us in California, there is one in particular that had a group of pooches and their owners barking. . . err, talking to folks on the streets recently. As a fan of all animals, this particular law hits close to home and made me want to get more information. Thankfully, there were a number of people on the street willing to talk me through it.

It's called Prop 2, and its goal is to help fight cruelty and inhumane treatment to farm animals. How?

Talking to the people on the street, I got the lowdown on what Prop 2 would mean for farmers and their animals.
Prop 2:

Prevents cruelty by making sure farm animals aren't shoved into tiny cages that don't allow them enough room to turn around, lie down, and extend their limbs while being raised as livestock.
Improves food safety. By preventing animals from being confined to such close quarters, it helps reduce the number of diseases and germs that spread between them that can eventually make their way into our food.
Protects the air and water surrounding farms by regulating untreated waste that gets released into our ground water, waterways, and soil.
Gives farmers sufficient time – until 2015 – to shift from their confinement methods to more humane practices.
Other states like Florida, Arizona, Colorado, and Oregon have already passed similar laws!

It goes without saying that you should definitely research the bills that you'll be voting on in your state on your own, so that you can draw your own conclusions. Do you have similar bills in your state? What issues are you most concerned about this voting season?

I know I'm totally being a faux stage mom here, but time is almost out to vote for Samson as Cutest Dog in the Worldwide Fido Awards! All you have to do is click on the "Vote For Me" bone at the top of his video. I'm determined to see one of our own make it to the finals, so keep voting! Who Did North Vote For?

Remember those political toys of "Bark Obama" and "John McCanine"? Well, before I voted, I decided to let North cast his ballot at home. Watch this video and tell me which toy he preferred. (It obviously doesn't need to correspond with our actual picks.)

Hmmm, both got kisses from my friendly pup. Maybe he wants a third-party candidate (an unknown dipped in peanut butter)? We'll have to wait and see the results!

Vote on "Cool vs. Cruel" Fur-Free Fashion

For the third year in a row, the Humane Society of the US educated fashion students from various Art Institutes about the problems associated with animal fur, including cruelty and false labeling. Then, in perfect Project Runway style, comes their challenge: budding designers are shown four runway designs from fall 2007 that used animal fur, then asked to reinterpret and improve them sans cruelty in a Cool vs. Cruel fashion design contest.

Test your eye for style and pick your winner out of the 16 very original designs. Be sure to vote by October 29 – each person can only vote once so don't keep this contest to yourself. Check back on November 8 when fashion guru Tim Gunn and the rest of the judges announce their picks and the People's Choice winner too!

Is That Mr. Splashy Pants?

If you've ever wanted the chance to name a wild animal, your time has come! Greenpeace is sponsoring a whale naming competition for the humpbacks traveling on the Great Whale Trail. The contest started with over 11,000 submissions but has been whittled down to 30 possible suggested names including, as you probably guessed, Mr. Splashy Pants.

Now, this is where you come in. Pick your top fave from choices like Talei (meaning 'special or rare' in Fijian), Veikko (meaning 'brother or a good friend' in Finnish), and other equally interesting and melodic names. You can only vote once but spread the word – the deadline is Dec. 7.
