Today is Veterans Day to honor the men and women who have served this country, but have you stopped to consider who serves the soldiers if they go overseas and have no human family members to watch over animals in their absence?

Well, that's where NetPets's MilitaryPetsFOSTER Project comes in. The nonprofit has a huge database of foster homes in all 50 states as well as several foreign countries willing to house dogs, cats, fish, birds, horses, and more for up to 16 months. Acting as matchmakers, they help find a local party willing to take care of a beloved animal while the owner is stationed elsewhere. The Scoop: Dog Tags Program Matches Pups With Veterans

In honor of Memorial Day, I wanted to share information about this heartwarming program with you! To assist the veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, Puppies Behind Bars has launched the Dog Tags plan to match disabled soldiers with specially trained Labrador Retrievers or Golden Retrievers to assist them in their daily lives, performing tasks ranging from opening the door to helping to pick up dropped items. These dogs not only are new life companions for the veterans, but the fully-trained service dogs would run each person around $30,000 if left to pay for it on their own.

Supermodel mom Rebecca Romijn sure does have a full schedule. Not only is she juggling newborn twins Dolly and Charlie, and workouts to keep her fab bod in shape, but she keeps tabs on her two frisky pups Taco and Better. Phew - I'm tired just thinking about it!

Rebecca was spotted leaving a friend's house in LA last week with a cuddly poodle mix that seems to be her veteran pup Better - but it looks like that super cute pooch got a super cropped 'do. I imagine this style's a great way to beat the heat on warm SoCal days, but I wanna hear it from you - do you think the groomer went too far with the clippers or is the buzzed look best on this pooch?

Glenn Close Honors Puppies Behind Bars and Dog Tags

Glenn Close hosted an event last night to honor pups that have served in combat, and with returning veterans, for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The benefit celebrated the brave men and women (and dogs!) and raised awareness for the organization that makes it all possible, Puppies Behind Bars.

The prison-based nonprofit trains dogs to be explosive detection canines and service dogs for the disabled with their newest initiative, titled “Dog Tags: Service Dogs For Those Who’ve Served Us”, offering these inmate-trained canines to help soldiers readjust to civilian life. See members of the first New York "Dog Tags" graduating class and their new families in the gallery below.

Spring is a great time to get outside and run around . . . and I don't mean just for your dog! Make it a team effort and train for a 5K that your furry pal can participate in as well. There are plenty of fun runs that benefit not only your health, but the animal shelters and programs that host the events get a much-needed bump in funds from all those entry fees.Running can seem like a scary sport to break into if you aren't the natural-born runner, but Fit assures us that it's easier than we think. Plus, with your fur-laden companion by your side, it just might be fun and gives you a good chance to meet 'n greet new people and pups for you and Fido to befriend (and possibly doggie date)!
