I'm definitely not a fan of tying pets up for long periods alone, but there are times when I'm outside and I don't have an extra hand for my pup's leash. We like laying out at the park, or in friends' backyards for BBQs, and it's important to help my smooshy stay cool with water , pet sunscreen, and possibly even this PetBrella ($56) while we relax.

It's not that much different than a normal beach umbrella except it comes with a special tie-out stake; when tethering a pet near a shade tree, they can easily tangle themselves around it, but this umbrella's just an extension of the stake so pets will have room to roam without getting all twisted up. The 'brella comes with a carrying bag, and can be tilted for a proper angle or removed altogether if the sun goes down. I think the concept is great but I'm not sure we've get enough use out of it . . . especially with no lawn of our own. What do you think?

Hands-Free Umbrella Makes Rainy Dog Walks Easy

So, if you hated that matching doggie 'brella set, there may be times when you don't want to pull on a parka, but don't want to get wet either. If your dog's half as crazy as mine (scratch that, a quarter), this product would come in handy . . . or out of handy, actually. Fresh from the MoMA Store, this Ryo Masaki-designed Hands-Free Umbrella ($50), is absolutely perf for walking the dog on a rainy day. The handle is made of a flexible rubber that can be wrapped and molded around the shoulder for easy protection. I'm not brave enough to try to carry a normal umbrella while grappling with North's leash, so I think this product is amazing – wouldn't you agree?

Dog Umbrella: Spoiled Sweet or Spoiled Rotten?

It's super rainy here . . . boo. Neither I nor my pup are fans of the falling wet stuff. But, as much as he dislikes it, I also dislike putting the raincoat on my pooch when he decides he has to go potty at six o'clock on a drizzly morning . . . and then again two hours later. After all, North just does a quick dash to the nearest post, pees, and makes another beeline back to my front door. Getting him to walk any further means I am stuck with a grumpily wet dog who tries desperately to rub the wet (and the dog) against any fabric-covered item he can find back inside my apartment.

If this is sounding like a familiar dance to you, then enter the pet umbrella ($17.95). Meant for tiny pooches, it's essentially a very short leash, umbrella and bent handle for you to grip. I'm betting my little guy moves a tad too fast for his product and will cause the umbrella to swerve back and forth allowing him to get both sides of his body and my legs, pretty wet. But, maybe the rain is bringing about my negativity so what do you think?

Desperately grasping a broken umbrella is one of the worst feelings I can think of . . . as is the accompanying sogginess. I've definitely been caught out in the rain and slammed the wire-jutting contraption into the trash as I slosh to work.Well, no more. See these adorable raincoats? 'Tis the season of gift giving, but I know times are tight! Ten Tips 'Til the Holiday: City Sidewalks

In many states, it is legal to put down lime-rock salt or calcium-chloride salt to melt the snow on city streets. However, this seemingly innocuous substance is very poisonous to dogs – when pups return inside, and lick their paws, it can cause them to throw up (or worse). Also, its rough texture can cut their little feet and put salt in their wounds, literally . . . ouch! When animals who have walked on salt-covered paths return home, be sure to clean paws off thoroughly or put booties on them before they go outside. Remember trudging through snowbanks in your boots is completely different than pooches wading through the cold stuff up to their bellies! Consider toting a little shovel or pointy-tipped umbrella to clear a trail for your pup to do his business on snowy roads.
