Gobble, Gobble Gift Guide: Turkey Toys For Thankful Dogs

If you're attending a budget Thanksgiving dinner at a home with a four-legged pal, in addition to your potluck dish for the humans, this roast turkey is fresh out of the oven for doggies' delight.

Greedy pooches will get a bite, tug, gnaw, and kick out of this toy – after all, each of the legs and the body have a squeaker for five times the fun! Some will surely hoard turkey parts for later so detachable limbs are a bonus for stashing or sharing in multiple pet households. Oh, and what's that green thing you ask? Why a sprig of rosemary, of course. Ha!

Check out the rest of my T'giving gift guide to make pups thankful for turkey below.

As part of an annual tradition, two turkeys (well, one bird and an "understudy") get a full presidential pardon - and the designation as the "national Thanksgiving turkey." This photo may be one of last year's feathered friends, but check yourself on the upcoming event below!

As part of an annual tradition, two turkeys (well, one bird and an "understudy") get a full presidential pardon - and the designation as the "national Thanksgiving turkey." Did you know that these not-so-little birds weighed around 45 lbs. each?
Do Tell: What's on the Menu For Your Pets This Thanksgiving?

Introducing large quantities of rich "people food" into a pet's diet on Thanksgiving is bad for their tummies! In fact, some typical holiday fare should never be fed to pets. One sure way to be certain no one slips up is to place the appropriate portion of your furry friend's normal snacks in a convenient location. Point out the healthy treats to your guests and encourage them to pamper your pals with extra petting or playtime . . . not to feed the snacks all at once.

Dog-Approved Snacks:

Small piece of white-meat turkey

A few cooked, unseasoned carrots or green beans

Spoonful of canned pumpkin (not pie filling)

Sweet Potato Dog Chips

Small apple or banana slice

What's on your pet's menu for next week?

Pet Food Recall: Solid Gold Pop-Top Cans

If your pup dines on Solid Gold brand dog food, then sit up and take note! The company has voluntarily recalled one formula from their line of canned pet food because of several complaints regarding mold found in a batch of 13.2 oz cans. Affected formulas are:

13.2 oz Turkey and Ocean Fish Canned Dog Food

Purple label with a POP –TOP (Pull top) only

Date on bottom of can 01/02/2010

(Turkey and Ocean Fish cans without a Pop-Top are not affected.)

This limited production was never distributed in the following states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, or Washington so, if you live there, you may have never seen this item anyway. If you have any of these affected formulas with the dates noted as above, please return or discard the item! If you suspect your pup has eaten a contaminated food, or you see something suspicious, refresh your memory about how to report this to the FDA here.

Turkey Pot Hold-the-Pie – A Delish Dish For Dogs

The look on this cav's face says it all – yum-o! Although, the pot pie is crustless (and served cooled to room temperature), I think pups will still love it even without the warm-your-tum or pie parts that I think of with this dish.

Learn how to make the veggie-filled, pet-friendly recipe from the September issue of Everyday Day With Rachael Ray when you read more.

Turkey Pot Hold-the-Pie
Every Day With Rachael Ray (September 2008)

Your K9 companion will get their fill of this crustless potpie! (It’s like comfort food for dogs!)

Ingredients

1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
¼ pound deli-sliced turkey, chopped
1 cup frozen peas and carrots, thawed
2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley

Directions
In a small skillet, heat the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour for 1 minute, then whisk in the chicken broth and bring to a boil over high heat. Lower the heat and simmer until thickened, 2 to 3 minutes.
Stir in the turkey, veggies and parsley and cook until heated through, 2 to 3 minutes. Let cool to almost room temperature, then serve.

6 Simple and Yummy Doggy-Friendly Recipes

The weather outside is no longer frightful, and most of us have freshened up our dinner menus with Summer salads, BBQ and seasonal veggies. If you don't want to just give your dog a bone, whip him up a meal that's decidedly more delicious than his usual bowl of kibble. Here are some of my favorite recipes for doggie vittles for inspiration.

Spinach and Eggy Apps For You (and Your Little Dog, Too)

Create Chinese "Fake-Out" For You (and Your Furry Friend)

Turkey Pot Hold-the-Pie – A Delish Dish For Dogs

Rachael Ray Scoops the Stoup for Doggies' Delight

Happy Birthday! Two Pet Cake Recipes

Doggie Tuna Casserole . . . It's What's for Dinner

Creature Features: What Do You Know About Buzzards?

The term buzzard is used for vultures, particularly the American Black Vulture and Turkey Vulture. Their feeding habits are a bit messy, but they are incredible birds. The Ruppell's vulture is actually known as the world's highest flying bird. In 1973, one collided with an airplane that was flying at 37,000 feet! Do you know your buzzard trivia? Take my quiz and find out!
Source
