Wine is definitely my weakness and, even though I've yet to share it with my pooch, I love the idea of this cork-designed placemat ($4.50). It's totally perfect for my wine cellar . . . errrr, I mean kitchen (but a girl can dream). Not only is the matching treat jar super cute, I think this dish mat would look perfect with a Whiner and Diner feeder up top. Is this subtle style perfect for the wine lovers in your life, too?

Pampered Pals: Hand Painted Cat Treat Jars

There's just something about these jars from Modern Tails ($75-$85). A tad on the kitschy side, I've always had a thing for hand painted pottery. Since I haven't seen a Color Me Mine in years – and I'm not sure my artistic skills are quite up to par – I'd love to just pick up a unique treat jar as a special gift for a cat lover. These jars are custom made so no two are identical and all work is done right in the artist's studio, with three paint applications to give them bright, long lasting colors. Opie and Dixie's Healing Paw Balm: It Really Works!

OK, so I go for my twice monthly mani-pedis and North sits at home and waits. I admit it, I feel bad. And although I wouldn't subject North to "pawnail" polish (hello, he's a boy!), I did treat him to a few paw treatments with Opie and Dixie's Healing Paw Balm ($15).

As soon as I opened the jar, I smelled hints of chamomile, lavender, rosemary, tea tree, and basil, which made me feel like I was at a spa myself. And after just a few treatments, North's dry and cracked paws were as soft as they were when he was a puppy! I've barely broken in the jar after about six applications (on all four paws), and for only $15 bucks, the price seems to be right for a nice treat for your pampered pup.

Female Cats Are Right Pawed and Males Are Lefties!?

When using those interactive kitty toys, have you stopped to see which paw your cat bats? Turns out not only do animals, like dogs, favor one paw over the other, but recent research cites evidence of the role of gender in felines.

A study of 42 domestic cats in at Queen's University, Belfast, let kitties complete three play-like tasks at home with their owners . . . and found that female felines prefer to use the front right paw, while the males rely on the left adding to existing evidence that boy animals have greater left-handed tendencies than girls.

Task One: Place tuna at the bottom of an otherwise empty, narrow-mouthed jar - which paw did kitty use to try to get treated?
Task Two: Suspend a fabric mouse on a string above the cat's head - which paw was first used to reach for it?
Task Three: Drag the same mouse toy on the ground in front of the cat - which paw did the cat swipe with first?

The study revealed that the results for tasks two and three varied but, for task one, paw preferences of left for male and right for female were obvious. Test it out at home and share your findings in the comments below!

Besides being home to several super cute animal shops, and pet-friendly people stores, I was stunned by the sheer number of places supplying a jar of yumyums by the cashier. While I can think of a few local spots that sell or offer pet treats by the check out, it's definitely not the norm. How is it in your city – can you get dog cookies with your coffee?

Scoop Kitty a Treat

This adorable ceramic jar is sure to rub any cat lover the right way. Designed for cat food or treats, I especially love the little mouse and cheese lid. But, oops, I don't even own a cat! I'm going to think outside-the-jar with this one (as I'm all for using products for purposes other than those intended) – consider digging out flour, sugar, nuts, or other scoopable items from this cute container. Meow!
