Remember when Mýa and the North Shore Animal League kicked off the Tour For Life just a couple weeks ago? Well, now that the cross-country adoption drives have their engines up and running, check out all the people who cruised in for yesterday's event featuring pets from the North Shore Animal League America and the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services at Venice Beach, CA. I love to see celebrities backing good causes, and this certainly counts as a great one.

The world's largest no-kill shelter is bringing its life-saving mission on the road! Stopping in more than 20 US Cities to help save pets' lives across America, Tour For Life is the North Shore Animal League's month-long cooperative initiative with animal shelters across the country. The annual event not only raises public awareness about the plights of all shelter pets, it also helps hundreds of orphaned dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens find their forever homes.

One of Santa's little helpers at this year's Petchitecture event was Michael Cunningham, owner of one of my fave pet shops here in the city, Babies. He donated tons of tasty treats to please the furry guests, and buckets of goodies for the silent auction that brought in much needed funds for the Pets are Wonderful Support (PAWS), a volunteer-based organization that provides for the comprehensive needs of companion animals for low-income persons with HIV/AIDS, other disabling illnesses, and senior citizens. Since I dig his store (and his big heart), I thought I would give you a tour at Babies' brand new location at Laguna and Linden in the hip Hayes Valley area of San Francisco.

We wrapped up our travels in Hawaii with aquatic life, and I stumbled upon some great tips for choosing a whale-watching tour no matter where you are. First and foremost, please remember you are getting the lucky opportunity to spot these creatures in their natural environment and you should never do anything to put them in jeopardy. Before making the pick, ask yourself if the tour operators are putting the animal first and not making any promises (i.e., money-back guarantee) that could cause them to take unnecessary risks.

Have you ever walked into an animal shelter and wanted to take every single one of those little guys home with you? It's so sad knowing that a lot of them won't make it to a forever home. Becoming a foster parent can help by taking the animals out of the shelter and increasing their chances of survival but, because of monetary constraints, it's just a fact of life that shelters can't always get the food and vaccinations they need.

To finish up our week in Hawaii, let's check out some of the species that call it home. Winter is a great time to go whale watching — in fact, many people consider February to be the peak season on the islands — and their waters are home to 23 species of marine mammals including the humpback whale and several types of dolphins. Aquatic Surfari's Wild Side Specialty Tours, offer daily morning wildlife charters to look for whales combined with dolphin and turtle encounters and reef snorkels to maximize your adventure.
