I got very nostalgic when I found this month's Bark magazine to have a spread on the old-timey carnival chalkware figurines. My grandmother had a collection of these and I remember looking at them through the glass of an old oak display case. Given away as Midway prizes in the '40s and '50s, you really can't find many of these around anymore (except for Ebay and maybe a few antique shops of course), but I still get a smile on my face looking at the soft colors of the animal trinkets.

I'm a huge fan of The Bark magazine, not only because it's based here on the West Coast, but they consistently report great info and news for dogs and their owners. In this month's issue – just in time for Take Your Dog to Work Day coming up on June 20 – Bark dug into the nation's most pet-friendly workplaces and came up with their top four faves. Not only does this story have me wanting to make a little space for North by my desk here at Sugar HQ, but it also has me saying "Awww!"

Now we've tackled barking issues on the site in the past, but my new pal, TrèsSugar came to me with one noisy dilemma. Turns out a neighbor has two dogs kept in the backyard at night. However, the two pups don't seem to care for this set-up as they bark or, as she says, one barks and the Pug sounds more like coughing or choking as it tries to chime in.

Barking dogs belonging to neighbors are no fun, but what do you do if the noise's coming from within your own home? Whether your pooch barks or howls for no reason, flips out at little things like the door buzzer, or sporadically sounds his alert throughout the day, how do you make it stop?
North adjusts well with a little refocusing — calling a name, getting his attention, or distracting him elsewhere — but there are still those pooches that have much to say when we leave.

Summer usually is the time for family road trips and, for most, this includes your four-legged family members as well. I hate to put this out there, but if by chance you get into an accident with your pet in the car (knock on wood, this hasn't happened), first responders can have a heck of a time trying to get you out of a mangled car safely, which can become even more difficult if they have a scared or injured pet on their hands.
First off, pets should always be belted in for their (and your) own good, but adding this Pet Safety Kit into the mix can help even more.

Don't you just love it when celebrities use their fame to do good for animals?! Well-known animal advocate Bernadette Peters created an event a decade ago with pal Mary Tyler Moore called Broadway Barks, to raise money for New York-area shelters. Year after year, she lends her support to rescue groups and promotes shelter adoptions .

As I've mentioned before, I've taken North almost everywhere and he seriously loves getting out and meeting people. But I seem to get a guilt trip whenever I go out without him to meet up with my pals for drinkies. And, apparently, I'm not the only one that has felt the pangs of guilt from their pup, cause now you can even take your pooch to the bar with you!

Although I like wine for me, I obvs know that booze has no business in my pup's tum. Not the case with Bark Vineyards. Based in Williamsburg, Virginia ( a great pet-friendly destination in itself), the company bottles nonalcoholic "wines" for your dog.

Hi, foxy Roxy! This cutie pie Pomeranian came out for the First Annual Bark For The Cure 5K/Canine Celebration with mom, Carmen Electra.
Sponsored by the Freshpet Foundation, the event (and nonprofit) supports nutritional research in the areas of prevention, care and treatment of canine cancer.
