Would You Get a Tattoo of Your Pet?

I've heard that tattooing can be totally addictive – once you get one, you'll never stop. I have been with some pals while they've gotten their first ink, and I'm not entirely sure I could work up the courage to dive in. The thought of pain and especially the sound of the tattoo gun made me want to take cover in a corner somewhere!

So when I came across some pet tattoos featured on The Bark Blog, it has me convinced that these are some pretty devoted pet owners . . . not only to get a tattoo of their beloved pets, but to brave the actual act of getting it in the first place!

Obvs, I'm not too hip on the whole tattooing craze myself (and I don't see myself changing my mind anytime soon). Until then, I'll be the one in the corner cowering away from the dentist-drill-sound of the tattoo gun – how about you?

Bare Bones: Microchipping vs. Tattooing

I'm lucky to have never lost a pet, but I can't even imagine how I would cope if it happened to me. Microchips and tattoos provide an extra level of protection if a pet becomes separated from you, and from his collar and tags. Providing tags and a microchip or tattoo can help ID him if he is turned in. Both procedures typically cost around $45.

You'll remember, I'm a strong supporter of ID tags – for us pet owners, microchips and tattoos are common knowledge, but those who do not have pets may not even know that these exist. In the chance that your dog escapes, but that his collar remains on, I believe ID tags are the first step in recovery. However, I am equally committed to this additional step of protection.

Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice. Insertion is a super quick procedure between the shoulder blades like a shot, and is not visible afterwards. Most dogs – North included – go through it without even a whimper. The great thing about microchips is that if your dog is lost and turned into a shelter, vet's office, or animal control, many of these locations are equipped with microchip readers. Nowadays, the technology allows readers to be able to scan the dog (similar to a bar code), and even identify different microchip brands.

The other permanent ID option is a tattoo. While microchips do not require anesthesia, tattoos do. Tattoos leave a visible mark on the animal (usually on the right ear or inner thigh) so it's more obvious he has some additional ID method if his collar comes off. However, if his tattoo tag is gone, it may be harder to figure out where this number is registered. Personally, I'm scared to get a tattoo myself so don't think I could pick that option but it's up to you as responsible pet owners to choose what's best for you and your animals.

Bare Bones: Identity Crisis?!

I got found by a dog in Austin last November. Here I was minding my own business walking down the street when he trotted up to walk alongside. Not only was no one calling him back, there were no other people on the entire block. Being the animal lover that I am (and missing my lil' fella back home), I began talking happy puppy voice to him. We cross the street and the dog continues walking towards a man standing on the corner. As I was about to chastise the man for letting his dog roam off-leash, he grabs the dog's collar right before the dog darts into traffic, asking me if I am even paying attention to my dog. Realizing that the dog belonged to neither of us created quite the dilemma.

Luckily, the dog had an ID tag like the Bon Ton Baby – Flashing ID Tag (seen above). After trying three times to unsuccessfully get anyone to answer the phone, the only other option was to convince the dog to come into the car and bring him home, a good 10 minute drive away. But, unluckily, we arrive to a fenced-in yard and no one answering the door. We can't just leave the dog, nor can we sit in a stranger's driveway all day...

The dog was a fairly big Lab mix but my (former college wrestler) friend decides to heave him over the fence and hope that he at least stays inside until his owners return home. As he does this, I knock on the neighbor's door to let him know to keep an eye out for the dog and tell the owners about their little escape artist.

So, that's just a long story to tell you a very short message, please get an ID tag for your pets! I'll talk about other pet ID options in a later post, but keep in mind that to read a microchip or tattoo ID requires bringing the pet to a vet. And, while getting that ID tag from a machine in a store is certainly better than no tag at all, here are some other options for this PetSugar essential (even one that plugs into a USB port!):

Pink and her Men

Pink and her fiance Carey Hart are stocking up on some alcoholic beverages for the evening. His tattoos look like a shirt - so gross. It seems that Carey is having a hard time controlling his bulldog. The good dog is protecting the couple from the paparazzi.
