I know my pooch loves any game involving him . . . and a ball to chase, catch, or chew! Even though tennis seems to be the most common style of choice, I rounded up some other round balls to get your dogs off the bench and into the backyard. Even if you think your pet's better at drooling than dribbling, from flat to stuffed, see the top b-ball toys to make my list. Last Saturday was the Dog Days of Summer event for the San Francisco Giants. Once a year, the team invites people (and their pooches!) to enjoy a baseball game at AT&T Park. Sadly North and I couldn't make it this time, but next year, I'm buying my tix early!

Pampered Pals: The Buddy System

My friend is training for a marathon and wants a special leash to bring her hyperactive Jack Russell on short runs to try to work off some of that pup's endless energy. She was temporarily looping the leash on the drawstring of her shorts . . . until his love for a passing squirrel almost left her shortless! Consisting of a belt to go around her waist, it moves around so if little Clive decides to switch sides, the belt will auto adjust so she doesn't have to worry about tugging him or switching hands to keep him safe. The "leash" attachment does not need to be held (as it attaches to the belt), but it does come with a quick release at the top if she suddenly wants to hang on. Lastly, there is a clip to attach to the pet's collar or harness and has a swivel hook to limit tangling. The Buddy System comes in regular and a lightweight small version with add-ons like lunge buster (a shock-absorbing bungee) or extra buddy (for running with multiples).

Two Bizarre Ways to Put Your Dogs to Work at a Tailgate

It's nearly game time - since your dogs' tail waggin' tailgate is already in full effect, now it's your turn . . . to get them a gift that keeps on giving.

The ~~stylish~~ functional Tailgate Companion has six pockets to put your pooch to work - use it to hold grilling essentials, icy beverages, or even mustard and ketchup (if he's not already sporting it).

If that's not quite his style, swap out a normal neckpiece for the new Kurgo Wander Collar. Its leash ring doubles as a bottle opener. Kinda brilliant in theory yet, while there aren't any laws about walking a dog while drunk, I'm guessing this could violate an open-container policy on normal city streets. But at a tailgate - no problemo.

2008 Westminster Winners: Non-Sporting Group

This hodge-podge collection has a special place in my heart for my little North is part of the Non-Sporting group! I learned during last night's show that, not only is it made up of pups that didn't fit any other group, originally there were just two groups – the Sporting and the Non-Sporting. As new groups formed and split off, first the Hounds and Terriers separated from the Sporting and the Toys and Working split from the Non-Sporting, with Herding later breaking away from the Working. But, who topped the remaining pooches in the Non-Sporting group that competed last night? To see their winner, read more.

Ahh! "Remy" the Standard Poodle! I can't say I was surprised as poodles often capture this group ("Yes" won at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship show) but I was really pulling for the Bulldog who has entered the AKC most popular breed list for the first time in 75 years. He was so adorable (and adorably slow) so maybe next year he'll come out on top.

For the Non-Sporting group, the results were:

2009 Westminster Winners: Non-Sporting Group

It's the group closest to my heart, the hodge-podge Non-Sporting pups! Of course, no Boston Terriers placed in the top four – North says robbed as usual! – but I do see two other smooshies up there, including an Annabelle lookalike.Between the 18 pups that don't quite fit into any of the other six groups, which of these dogs captured the title? No real surprise to me as "Yes" the Standard Poodle, who won this group at the last two AKC/Eukanuba shows (but lost to Remy last year), captures the Non-Sporting group for 2009. I was really pulling for those smooshies, too – next year, I can feel it!

2009 Westminster Winners: Sporting Group

Welcome to Day Two of Westminster kicking off with the Sporting group. Made up of dogs that point the game with their noses (i.e., the pointers), flush the game out (i.e., the spaniels), and then retrieve the game (i.e., the retrievers), these pooches are bred to be busy bees. Bonus points for getting my movie joke there. But I digress. There are some stunners in this group with two of the country's most popular breeds making the final cut. Who came out on top? The super-cute Sussex Spaniel was the big winner! I have to say the cute fella won me over with his name – I dare you to look at this pup or try to say "Stump" without smiling. Impossible.
