Snow keeps falling around much of the country, but here's a product that can prove useful whether your surroundings include snow, grass, or sand. Back when we talked about wintry bathroom breaks that some pets would prefer to avoid, I spotted this item mentioned in the comments (thanks, flyingroo).

Pups with problems deciding where to go, meet Potty Rock ($15). Since it's used for potty training, the stone has a special odor that makes dogs want to go. This means not only can you help fight urine spots and protect the lawn, you can also help a pet hone in on one spot by just clearing that area away and placing it there. Sounds like a win-win for your pets and your plants, too.

Will Your Dog Fetch Snowballs?

North's happy to announce we're in the middle of a veritable heat wave in SF since he's not a cold weather fan! If you live in a colder climate where your snow bunnies can run and play (and hopefully pee) in the white stuff, try tossing them a snowball. Say you don't have the similarly-shaped toy at the ready, would your fetch loving pets chase a snowball in a pinch?

I Need Your Help . . . My Dog Won't "Go" in the Snow!

Let's tackle a common problem with doggies in cold-weather climates – especially in cities where bathroom breaks come in the form of walks on snowy sidewalks. Even North was hesitant about potty time in Winter, preferring to do his business where there was the least amount of slush to trudge through (usually the curb). If you've also had (or still have!) this problem, let's come up with ways to help pups get over it or solutions to at least make it a lil easier on them in the meantime.

Do Tell: How Do You Treat Icy Sidewalks?

I've already mentioned the dangers of ice melts but what do you do when faced with steps full of snow?! I want to hear your best recommendations for environmentally (and pet) safe products to prevent slipping in wintry weather.

I know that some people use eco-tastic sand, grit, or gravel to add traction but keep plants and waterways safe, yet I imagine that can get kinda muddy, too. If you've made a home in a place with the white stuff, what will you sprinkle on the steps, driveway, and sidewalk this season?

If your dog's trudging through snow or scampering on icy sidewalks treated with salt, it's important to keep their paw pads protected. Granted this can look a bit silly to nondog owners, but it's important since the lime-rock or calcium chloride melts are poisonous to pets. Shoes prevent the risk of a pup cutting or licking his feet, but I can tell you from experience, it's hard to find ones that stay on! If you're in the market for a new set, the ones Reuben wears here come personally recommended by the Goldendoodle's human mom, Beaner, who says:

My husband did a bunch of research and other booties seemed too short. These Neo-Paws Regular Performance Dog Shoes ($34 and up per pair) have a long strip of velcro you can wrap around the dog's legs. They take a little more effort to get them on, but they're so worth it.

Globetrotters: Blizzard Hits Big Apple

Well, it's a true snow day in NYC as the flurries just keep falling and falling! The storm is expected to dump up to 10 inches of snow on the region and, on behalf of all those cold-weather pooches out there, hooray! If you're trapped somewhere wintery today, brush up on my tips for cold weather and pets before heading outside to play. Keep in mind there's lower visibility for both you and dogs so, if your pooches are off leash, make sure they're in a safe spot like the crew snapped at Prospect Park this afternoon!

You're Never Gonna Keep Parker Down . . .

Whether working on an easy ride or "Operation: Take Down Tire," I've gotta hand it to Parker for his skillz. Again and again (and again and again), he attempts to get a good jaw grip on that rope. He works up quite the momentum from the start but the highlight comes near the end of the video when he manages to wrap his paws around it. This advanced display of BT willpower makes me want to put a tire swing in my backyard (note to self: work on getting backyard), and see if North will take his lead!

Is Your Pet a Snow Bunny?

Even though having pets outside in freezing temps can be dangerous for long periods of times, many pooches enjoy a good pounce in the snow. North didn't make it to Tahoe this holiday weekend, but we hope to get up there soon. He's a tad undecided about the cold stuff; he likes to stay on stomped, semi-solid ground to sniff around the snowbank – unfortunately, he makes it his business to smell it, not to do his business in it. How about your pets?

Can You Spot the Dalmatian?

I'm no stranger to silly dogs in snow videos, and this one was no exception! Bailey the Dalmatian may be part groundhog and part rabbit with her masterful burrowing and hopping techniques . . . chasing snowballs she could never catch. But, hey, it does cut down on the need to shovel a path!
