PetSugar Street Team: Dog Smog Remedy

According to LilPeaPod, Samson's doggie breath doesn't always smell like roses. And who doesn't have this problem? So when she went into her local pet shop looking for an all natural breath spray, she was ecstatic to find Happytails Dog Smog Remedy ($14) that "curtails emissions from both ends"! Why is this so exciting? Well, if you don't know bulldogs, they are known to have a bit of a noisy rear end.

I wanted an all natural breath spray for Samson, since brushing his teeth doesn't seem to be helping curb his doggie breath (his food has a pretty potent smell), and was more than happy to try the Dog Smog Remedy, since he seems to have a lot of air in his belly ever since we changed his food to a different brand.

After only a few days, Samson's breath is smelling a lot better! I suppose that is thanks to the peppermint and spearmint essential oils. Plus, he's had less gas and bloating, from the fennel, ginger, parsley, and sage extracts among other natural ingredients in the Remedy. Samson loves the taste, and I like his fresh breath and clean air. . . if you know what I mean!

Nontraditional Products to Help Destroy Doggie's Bad Breath

Is doggie's mouth not so fresh and clean? If so, Fido isn't alone. More than half of PetSugar readers say their dogs have stinky mouth odor. Like humans, grody animal breath may be an aftereffect of a smelly treat, diet or body chemistry. You can take prevention steps by routinely brushing with meant-for-doggies toothbrush and toothpaste. Sadly, it can also be a symptom of greater health problems such as inflammation of soft tissue in the mouth, regurgitation or wart virus, so ask your vet to sniff out possible health concerns if you notice a certain stench.

Vets recommend that you routinely rinse or brush your dog's mouth out to kill major bacteria, but it's not an activity that makes doggie jump for joy. Check out some nontraditional products that will help keep your best friend's breath fresh between standard cleanings when you read more.

Tartar-Reducing Flossies: If doggie hates when you brush his teeth, try Flossies ($7 each). Think of these bones as beefy gum. The tendons make your dog lick his chops as he chews and create a friction to help clean his teeth.
Dental Swipes: Fast and Fresh Dental Swipes ($16) sounds great . . . kinda like a disinfecting wipe for your pets' teeth. The pre-moistened pads have an all-natural combo of peppermint, parsley, and baking soda to fight plaque and bacteria and promote healthy gums and teeth.
Chomper toys: Hard, rubbery toys with ridges and bumps stimulate gums, clean teeth, and keep him rather busy in the process. Braided floss products remove food debris, reduce plaque and tartar build up, and add in fluoride and mint to freshen breath, too.
Pop a breath mint: If you've tried everything (including a check up with the vet), and still don't think your pet is ready for a kissing scene, you might consider stocking up on some breath mints.

I Need Your Help... Stinky Puppy

Look at this lil face – can you imagine something so adorable could be so stinky?! When I spotted 7kimba7's blog about her smelly pup, Scout, I couldn't resist trying another team effort here! Read through her story which I've summarized below, and then share any tips or experiences in your comments!

"I have a Shih Tzu/poodle mix – his hair is getting long and he's starting to smell. It's not that I expect him to walk around smelling like peaches and roses, but he smells pretty soon after he gets a bath (not like poo, but very dirty dog). I have been giving him baths every Friday, I brush his hair everyday so it doesn't mat, and I find it odd that he smells so bad three days after his bath. I've even tried those "freshen-up" wipes, but nothing works.

Can anyone recommend anything to keep him non-stinky for at least a week? Or perhaps having shorter hair will help? Any tips for grooming in general would be appreciated . . . I am new with the doggy thing and I'm trying to be a good mommy. And again, I know that dogs smell; his scent is excessive. I guess I'm afraid that you guys will say 'dogs smell, get over it!'"

First up, try to isolate the smell. For example, extra stinky ears can be a sign of excessive wax or an infection, smelly breath can come from bad oral hygiene, or smelly fur and skin can (unfortunately) be more common with some breeds. Pups with oily skin can have extra oils in their coats that can become rancid and stink or cause (even more smelly) skin conditions. Also, some pups are more prone to bacterial skin diseases – I'd say make sure you are using a good anti-bacterial shampoo, and ask a vet or knowledgeable shop owner/groomer for suggestions. Lastly, smelly fur and skin can not only come from weak shampoo, but also from a pooch's diet. I couldn't help but recall Bella's smelly cat problem, and all of the food suggestions – do any of you have remedies, supplements, or grooming suggestions to combat the stink?

My pal likes to bring Io to the DIY bath station at a local pet shop but complained to me that her dog's collar always gets all wet (during the washing process) and smelly (during the drying process). So I recommended this chic Dublin Dog version instead.

Do Tell: How Do You Battle the Stink?

Let's be honest: sometimes our pets smell. And, try as we might to bathe them often and keep their bedding clean, sometimes that stink seeps into our entire home. P.U.! In addition to those standard air fresheners and aroma sprays, there are plenty of products out there to help us battle the smelly furmonsters like the Arm & Hammer Pet Fresh line with odor-eliminating foams, powders, and even a vacuum.

It's a bit overwhelming because they don't come cheap, and how will we know what will work . . . without making our house smell like a phony flower garden?! I'm curious to know what odor removers you include in your reek-wrecking army – so share all tips in the comments below!

Pet Peeves: P.U. Stinky Poo

Q: My cat creates a big stink. His poop is the stinkiest of any poops I have ever sniffed! I don't want to be too TMI here, but it's so bad that it often wakes me up . . . all the way in my bedroom. Am I stuck with smelly cat here – please help?!

A: Well, I have to admit this was one stinker of a problem for me to figure out. First off, sometimes smelly waste could be a sign of a health problem (like a parasite) so it's worth mentioning on your cat's next vet visit. Try reading the label of your kitty's food. The amounts of byproducts and grain fillers (corn, cornmeal, etc.) can lead to stinkier poo as pets can have trouble digesting too many carbs – there is often some reason for that higher priced food! You should see turkey, chicken, or other meat as the first ingredient. It's possible your cat is having trouble digesting some part of his food – undigested meat protein (rich in sulfides) putrefy and undigested fats turn rancid, too. Your vet can give you the best dining recommendation – my informed friends said to try Evo or Artemis – but anyone else who has experienced (and solved) this problem, please share in your comments below!
