Kella Ripa's Rescued Pup Gets a Day in the Sun!

The dog Kelly Ripa jokingly refers to as "the world's largest Shih Tzu," Chewy Consuelos joins her human fam for some outside fun in SoHo. She does look a tad too big to tote so she's using paws to prowl the New York City streets.

Rescued from the North Shore Animal League (and with a name bestowed by Lola, Michael, and Joaquin), she even got to enjoy June's Take Your Dog To Work Day with her TV mom! Check out this talented pooch making a furry cameo on Live with Regis and Kelly when you read more.

I Need Your Help . . . Help Name This Puppy!

Calling all creatives, SexyAndy needs our help! Well, see this cute face? He needs a name. The soon-to-be doggie mom can finally pick up the three-month-old pup from the shelter on Saturday but would love to hear from us:

Please give me your ideas on what to name him, I want a strong name because he's so small!

Chewy Leads Kelly Ripa From ABC

It's Chewy Consuelos, the "world's largest Shih Tzu." Well, not technically, but that's what her human mom (aka, Kelly Ripa) loves to call this pooch. She's definitely on the larger size for a potentially tote-able pet, but still totally cute as she walks on her own.

Let's talk about the leash technique for a moment: Kelly's holding the lead straight up, which can be used when first training a pup how to walk or to maintain control while she goes. Keeping the leash fairly taut and also straight up makes it impossible for the pooch to pull because it greatly limits, or stops entirely, the forward motion. Looks like Chewy's taking her time leaving the ABC Studios, so it seems to be working. Check out more adoro photos of the rescued doggie below!

The Results Are in: Top Dogs 2006

Remember taking tally of which pooches we thought would reign supreme when the final numbers came in from the American Kennel Club? Well, that time is now as here's the AKC ordered list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the country based on the number of those dogs registered in 2006. There's was some shaking up and I can't wait to learn about 2007! According to our votes on PetSugar, the list would be:

Labrador Retriever
Golden Retriever
Yorkshire Terrier
Dachshund
Shih Tzu
German Shepherd
Beagle
Boxer
Miniature Schnauzer
Poodle

Although the biggest mover was the Yorkie, Labs held their top spot (as they have since 1991) and all the other breeds from last year still stuck it out in the top ten. As a special note to me (and North!), the AKC reports that "not since the Boston Terrier hit the top nearly 70 years ago has a small breed worked its way to such a high spot on the list.” There's always next year – I'm still hoping my lil' one can make a comeback, too!

These Witty, Weathered Tees Win Giggles and Wagging Tails

I Need Your Help . . . Fleas AND Ticks!

Hiya, Fuji! I wish I wasn't seeing your adoro bathtime mohawk under such sad circumstances. This cute pup has recently come down with fleas and ticks – learn the Shih-Tzu's story below and let's try to help mn48225 come up with a solution!

Fuji caught ticks two weeks ago and then, over the weekend, he caught fleas. It's been five days now and I had applied Advantix on him, gave him a bath with flea shampoo and then switched to Advantage. Last time this happened, it seemed to work but, this time around, he is still scratching! I even cleaned my whole apartment and dusted it down with flea powder. Do you have any suggestions?

I Need Your Help... Stinky Puppy

Look at this lil face – can you imagine something so adorable could be so stinky?! When I spotted 7kimba7's blog about her smelly pup, Scout, I couldn't resist trying another team effort here! Read through her story which I've summarized below, and then share any tips or experiences in your comments!

"I have a Shih Tzu/poodle mix – his hair is getting long and he's starting to smell. It's not that I expect him to walk around smelling like peaches and roses, but he smells pretty soon after he gets a bath (not like poo, but very dirty dog). I have been giving him baths every Friday, I brush his hair everyday so it doesn't mat, and I find it odd that he smells so bad three days after his bath. I've even tried those "freshen-up" wipes, but nothing works.

Can anyone recommend anything to keep him non-stinky for at least a week? Or perhaps having shorter hair will help? Any tips for grooming in general would be appreciated . . . I am new with the doggy thing and I'm trying to be a good mommy. And again, I know that dogs smell; his scent is excessive. I guess I'm afraid that you guys will say 'dogs smell, get over it!'"

First up, try to isolate the smell. For example, extra stinky ears can be a sign of excessive wax or an infection, smelly breath can come from bad oral hygiene, or smelly fur and skin can (unfortunately) be more common with some breeds. Pups with oily skin can have extra oils in their coats that can become rancid and stink or cause (even more smelly) skin conditions. Also, some pups are more prone to bacterial skin diseases – I'd say make sure you are using a good anti-bacterial shampoo, and ask a vet or knowledgeable shop owner/groomer for suggestions. Lastly, smelly fur and skin can not only come from weak shampoo, but also from a pooch's diet. I couldn't help but recall Bella's smelly cat problem, and all of the food suggestions – do any of you have remedies, supplements, or grooming suggestions to combat the stink?

27 Dresses . . . and Too Many Dogs to Count

Katherine Heigl and hubby Josh Kelley certainly have a pack of pooches to take care of! Three of their pups took an adventure yesterday to the vet's office in Los Angeles. Now, even though I thought she had four dogs, I keep stumbling upon a very recent quote where she says she has five. Hmmm, I smell a mystery.

Just so I won't be the only one unable to follow the picture trail of her dog ownership, let's go back in time, shall we? Now, off the bat, I remembered she was a judge for the nationwide Old Navy mascot search and I found a magazine blurb describing the announcement of the contest (on April 28, 2006) that said she owned three dogs including a Shih Tzu named Maggie and that she recently adopted a German Shepherd mix named Anderson. Sweet, I thought. Three dogs down, two to go.

Buuuuuut . . . flash forward to Feb. 19, 2007 when she appeared on Martha Stewart to talk about the fund-raising work she was doing with Pedigree. While on air, she shows that black-and-white pic and describes her pets "from the top left: Weezer, Stella, Romeo, and Piper (a rescue)." Eeks! No Maggie and no Anderson. Four pups down, two missing, and one to go.

I'm no stranger to changing a pup's name, but even in black and white, that dog looked pretty dark to be the same "Anderson" from that earlier article. And, while it seemed possible that Maggie could have passed away, I couldn't imagine Anderson being gone as well. But, since I've seen photos of a black pooch called Anderson, I was at a loss, and beginning to think it was possible that Anderson and Piper were in fact the same dog. Nope, that would be too easy. I was still banking on hearing her name off dogs as the most legit source I've got. As I looked back through photos in the gallery, I was once again thrown for a loop. Check out her hubby holding the leash of two large dogs, which bear uncanny resemblances to Piper and Anderson. Because Maggie's last appearance (that I could find) was in early 2006, I was more willing to bet this pooch was out of the picture than I was to deny the photograph.

So, I'm gonna venture a guess and say that she in fact does have five dogs (Weezer, Stella, Romeo, Piper, and Anderson) and assume that the black dog is Piper and the shepherd-looking pup is Anderson. If Anderson resided with Josh before they were married (she could have "gifted" him like the pup she adopted for co-star/ BFF TR Knight), he wouldn't technically be her dog when she was on Martha, and, now that she's newly married – they're up to a collective five. I'm hoping, if she does in fact decide to star in Lost and Found, that she'll once again share and confirm her pooches' names. Until then, we'll just have to come to our own conclusions!

Meet Pucca, an 11-month old Terrier-Shih Tzu mix Sexyeyes recently fell in love with and adopted. She's such a little fuzzikins, with a paradoxical old man air about her, as if she's wise beyond her years. Thanks for introducing us, Sexyeyes, she's adorable! Keep us updated!
