To the Rescue: How Do You Keep Pets Safe on Halloween?

Halloween is nearly here, and I can't wait! I know it's a fun and exciting time for both you and your pet, but I wanted to share three quick tips to helping it go off without a hitch:

Keep an eye on your pet. We already talked about pets in Halloween costumes, but, even if he's not dressing up, pay extra attention to his well-being. Seeing his "family" with masks on, in addition to dozens of people coming to the door can be unsettling. If you feel your pet may be stressed out by the day's festivities, consider keeping him in a safe place inside the house.
Keep an eye on candy. While most pet owners know of the dangers of chocolate for dogs, candy wrappers (such as foils and plastics) can get stuck in your pet's digestive tract and make them ill. Watch out, and keep all candy secure and away from pet's reach.
Keep an eye on the surroundings. Look out for lit pumpkins around the house. Make sure pumpkins, or other decorations, are not placed in kitty's favorite perch or near wagging tails.

Out and About: Rhode Island's Block Island

Welcome to Week Two of PetSugar's Out and About travel feature where we'll visit the state of Rhode Island! Start the day by checking out the beautiful blazing red and golden amber fall foliage in the Narragansett Bay area before you (and your pooch) hop on the Block Island Ferry at Point Judith, just south of Narragansett. Leashed pets are allowed to make the hour-long trip on the traditional ferry, while small, contained pets can take the traditional or hi-speed ferry to this island.

Once there, wander the 20-plus miles of beaches (many open year-round) as well as The Greenway, a 30-plus mile network of trails – there are outdoorsy options for the true hikers, the leisurely strollers, as well as boats to rent and explore the 300-plus freshwater ponds. If you visit soon, you can see (and pup can bark at) the flocks of birds traveling along the Atlantic Flyway – often as many as 150 different species pass overhead!

Creature Features: Elephants Smashing Pumpkins

Elephant Awarness Month may be nearing its close but the celebration for Mimi and Dolly is far from over. These two lucky ladies at the Denver Zoo got a chance to play with their food, in this case two ginormous pumpkins, one weighing in at 425 pounds and the other at 660 pounds. The zoo's tradition of giving elephants pumpkins to carve... err, stomp... announces the start of this weekend's Boo at the Zoo and, from the looks of it, makes a special snack for the pachyderms!

It's football season! Now PartySugar and I went to rival universities, and this weekend is something fondly known as the Big Game! Even though North isn't partying it up tailgate style, I would absolutely pack this set for any four-legged fans in attendance.

A Piece O'Pumpkin Advice For Jack-O'-Lantern Snacks

Since pumpkin is high on my list of healthy foods for a chubby or rumbly puppy tummy no matter the season, I feel the need to address those carved creations, if that's your kind of thing.

Not only can an open flame pose a danger, the unlit pumpkin is not pet-safe! While the fresh stuff is fine for furry friends, don't leave the jack-o'-lantern within paws' reach - after being carved and exposed to air, the vegetable grows bacteria and mold, which is very dangerous to doggies. Save the gourds for the garbage come Nov. 1 and pick up some canned pumpkin instead!
