Barney's Barking, Biting Mad as His First Dog Term Ends Soon

Don't get jealous lil guy! Seems like Barney (one of the two Scotties belonging to George W. Bush) may sense that another pup – one that we haven't even seen yet! – is already at the top of everyone's list. This pup is still super-duper cute as is his terrier pal, Miss Beazley, both currently residing in the White House. See how Barney greeted an admiring fan, errr reporter, this morning in the video below.

What's Your Take: Tatum Buys Drugs Because of Dog's Death?

ICYMI, Tatum O'Neal was arrested on Sunday while attempting to purchase crack cocaine. While this is obvs a very serious matter and she said there's no excuse for what she's done – she seems to have found one, placing the blame on her now deceased, 16-year-old Scottie offering this explanation:

"I lost my Scottish terrier, Lena," three weeks ago. "That seemed to set me off. She got old. She got cancer. She was the fabric of our family. We had to let her go to heaven. My daughter and I had to put her down. It was too horrible for words."

Tatum explains that the death of her beloved pet triggered her ongoing battle with "the disease of alcoholism" and memories that her mother passed away from addiction and that she's estranged from her father, Ryan O'Neal. I am by no means making light of her situation, or the death of her dog, but this sounds a tad suspicious to me – after all, there seems to be a difference between alcohol and crack. Pippi: Pet of the Day

Blue sky . . . check. Boat . . . check. Super cute Scottie . . . check. This puppy's Pippi, a Scottish Terrier that loves going camping and getting super dirty. She looks pretty clean here, but I'm thinking this shot was snapped pretty early on the adventure. She's got some Scottie BFFs, Stella and Morty, that she likes to play with . . . and she even shares North's love for peanut butter. Yum! In addition to her other pals, akrsouth recently added another lil pooch to the family – Willa's not even a year old yet but she's already fitting right in with Pippi's chasing and frolicking merriment!

Breed Spotlight: Scottish Terrier

The Scottish Terrier is an alert-looking pooch with a "heads-up, tails-up" attitude – the pointy ears and long muzzle make this one of the most recognizable doggie silhouettes around. Even though when I think of these pups I recall the black ones, they are also allowable in wheaten or brindle of any color. Scotties are small dogs usually weighing around 20 pounds – but what they lack in size, they certainly make up in spirit! According to the AKC breed standard, these trademark terrier characteristics are joined with a very special "varminty" expression. What the heck is varminty? Find out when you read more.

This word is commonly used in the dog world to describe a piercing expression that should also be very bright and keen – unsurprisingly, many terrier breeds should have these feisty characteristics. Very popular with US presidents, my research has dug up that several former presidents have owned these dogs, including Eisenhower, Reagan, and both Roosevelts! Oh, and don't forget these two cutie pies – they may look familiar as it's our current "First Dog" Barney meeting Miss Beazley when she joined the Bush family at the White House in 2005.

2009 Westminster Winners: Terrier Group

Terriers, the winningest group of all, may be so successful based on their breeding! Meant to be always on their toes, these pooches are little showoffs in the ring. Playing into the spunky doggies, judge Peter Green made crazy squeaking and quacking noises – he sure knows how to get a reaction! Regardless of his antics, and the pups' responses, do you think Charmin won this group again? Find out when you read more.

Sadly, it wasn't this Sealyham's year as the Scotty dog came out on top, actually swapping their no. 1 and no. 2 placements from last year! What a year for Scotland with the Scottish Deerhound and the Scottish Terrier ready to compete in Best in Show tonight.

2008 Westminster Winners: Terrier Group

Woof! The Terrier group has brought home more titles than any of the other seven groups with various terrier breeds winning a record 45 times since the Best in Show award was first introduced in 1907! These typically high-energy pups are bred to be agile enough to "go to ground" to pursue various quarry like rats, foxes, and other vermin and often display a large amount of determination and courage . . . in a pretty small package. Could the Reign of Terrier continue tomorrow night at Best in Show? Charmin (the Sealyham) already took home the big title at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, and he was looking just as smashing last night as he captured the Terrier group once again.

Stumpy! I mean, Stump, is the Best in Show at the 133rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show! The oldest winner in the history of Westminster at 10 years old, this Sussex Spaniel last won his group in 2004! I'll be following up with more info and photos of this cute fella as soon as he digs – I mean I dig – it up! Until then, we salute you, Champion "Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee."

The AKC/Eukanuba National Champion Is...

Even though it was filmed in Long Beach, CA back in December, the 2008 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship premiered on TV Saturday night. Of course, this was a must-watch for North and I as we once again curled up with friends and food to see the pups.

North was pretty sad when Elmer the Boston Terrier didn't place in his group (and went in the bedroom to sulk), but the rest of us tuned in for all the results and seven finalists to come into the ring. There were several familiar faces atop the groups, too, including this pretty pointer, Ch. Cookieland Seasyde Hollyberry.

Even though she's a pretty pup, I was secretly pulling for Merci, brother of the 2007 AKC/Eukanuba National Champion, Charmin. We'll see more furry faces – even some of the same ones, too – at the 133rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show less than two weeks away!
