If your dog's trudging through snow or scampering on icy sidewalks treated with salt, it's important to keep their paw pads protected. Granted this can look a bit silly to nondog owners, but it's important since the lime-rock or calcium chloride melts are poisonous to pets. Shoes prevent the risk of a pup cutting or licking his feet, but I can tell you from experience, it's hard to find ones that stay on! Ten Tips 'Til the Holiday: City Sidewalks

In many states, it is legal to put down lime-rock salt or calcium-chloride salt to melt the snow on city streets. However, this seemingly innocuous substance is very poisonous to dogs – when pups return inside, and lick their paws, it can cause them to throw up (or worse). Also, its rough texture can cut their little feet and put salt in their wounds, literally . . . ouch! When animals who have walked on salt-covered paths return home, be sure to clean paws off thoroughly or put booties on them before they go outside. Remember trudging through snowbanks in your boots is completely different than pooches wading through the cold stuff up to their bellies! Consider toting a little shovel or pointy-tipped umbrella to clear a trail for your pup to do his business on snowy roads.

Jonathan Adler's New Pottery Collection Is Totally Wild

Chic designer Jonathan Adler, who produced one of my favorite pet bed designs, is showing off his love for animals in a new way - with pottery and home accessories! His line of place card holders, pottery, salt and pepper shakers and lamps made in the likeness of whales, penguins, giraffes and hippos is right up my alley - it's all wild, baby! These goodies are available for purchase on his website ($18-$700) now, but if we're really lucky, we may see a few of the items on the shelves at Target. I'm pretty sure I've already seen the bull place card holder and snail napkin ring there already. Although the dachshund up there on top can't be considered a wild animal, he sure could use some love. Just look at that swaying back!

A large serving plate or bowl serves as the "basket" for a kitchen-themed gift, like the 14-inch Ceramic Bird Serving Platter. This pretty handmade design comes in either yellow or blue ($100 each).
On top of the ceramic dish, I stacked a set of Bad Dog Tumblers. With the words sit, stay, fetch, and come, each pint glass shows a naughty pooch doing the exact opposite ($35 for a set of four).

Mmmmm! Freeze-Dried Tuna Treats for Spoiled Felines

Cats and tuna go together like peanut butter and North. If you've never fed a cat fresh fish, then you are missing out on a love fest like you've never seen! My first cat would eat tuna faster than I could say "come 'n get it!" and then look me over at every meal after that as if to say, "Where's my tuna!?"

Protect Your Interior With Canine Covers

With the weather getting warmer, I'm sure you'll be headed outdoors to get some play time in at local beaches, lakes, rivers, and maybe even doing some camping with your four-legged friends. North especially loves the beach, but I don't love what the sand and salt water do to my car's interior! Try as I might, putting towels down in the car and in North's car seat doesn't always do the trick. Sometimes they even end up as toys before he even gets in! Spring Cleaning: Fish Tank

Undoubtedly, there has been a few times where you have let your fish tank go a little longer than normal between cleanings. A good thorough cleaning should happen at least once a month, where you replace at least ten percent of the water, clean off decorative accents, and vacuum or siphon the rocks. Since the primary cause of nitrate and algae in fish tanks is due to natural debris accumulating in the tank, cleaning the rocks and decorations is key to keep your tank (and fish) healthy.

If you have a seriously dirty tank, you may need to attack in sections over a few weeks to prevent new tank syndrome and disrupting your tank's pH balance, by cleaning a portion of the rocks and decorations at a time. Once you're all caught up, though, how do you maintain a good, clean tank? For some healthy tank tips, just read more.

First off, never clean with soap. Even if you feel as if you rinsed the tank really well, there will most likely be residue left and it is super harmful to your fish.
Small fish bowls can be cleaned every few weeks with 30 to 50 percent new water and a good scrub of the walls and rocks.
Aquariums, although more labor intensive, can have 10 to 30 percent of the water replaced every week. Make sure it is room temperature and is the proper water for your fish (fresh vs. salt water).
Clean or change your filter (if it's really dirty) once every two weeks. This will help to keep the water in your tank sparkly clean, not to mention healthy for your fishy friends.
Siphon or vacuum the gravel, rocks, and decorations in your aquarium once a month.

Tracee Ellis Ross (star of Girlfriends) takes her cute pooch for a walk after lunching at Fred Segal yesterday. I'm surprised to see her opting for a polypropylene, roped Mendota leash. Most popular in the agility and obedience rings, they have a broken-in, gentle-on-the-hands feel - and come in a rainbow of 21 radiant color combinations (she sports Salt & Pepper). As an added perk, even though it appears to be a sunny day in LA, this leash is great for those rainy ones, too - the solid-braid webbing is waterproof and colorfast showing no performance loss, runny colors, or fading when wet. If you're just walking around town like these two, the snap leash ($13.95) is preferred but, if you're getting a pooch into the competition circuit, check out the slip, show, and martingale versions as well.

Pawz For Soggy Paws

When I picked North up yesterday at Wag, I browsed in their retail shop and scoped these Pawz. Dog booties help protect feet from salt, chemicals, and sand but can be pricey for pooches that have other things in mind . . . like refusing to walk or using the shoe as a chew toy. While velcro booties are easy to keep on even the wiliest doggie paws, these biodegradable, waterproof options look like a great alternative. Purchase in packs of 12 (for $12), and reuse or dispose after each outdoor adventure.

Pups that walk with silly horse-clodding footsteps with traditional booties should love these because their lightweight rubber material is super-thin, bends with paws, and lets them still feel the ground they're walking on.
