The weather outside is no longer frightful, and most of us have freshened up our dinner menus with Summer salads, BBQ and seasonal veggies. If you don't want to just give your dog a bone, whip him up a meal that's decidedly more delicious than his usual bowl of kibble. Here are some of my favorite recipes for doggie vittles for inspiration.

Spinach and Eggy Apps For You (and Your Little Dog, Too)

Still searching for the perfect New Year's Eve party appetizer? The latest pet-friendly recipe from the December/January issue of Everyday Day With Rachael Ray is a Gus-tini, a crostini named for a dog pal, Gus. There's some variation to the recipe depending on whether or not you're feeding people, or treating a pooch to a small bit. Find both when you read more.

Holiday Brunch Gus-tinis
Every Day With Rachael Ray (December/January 2009)

Ingredients

2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped (for people portions only)
Half of a 10-ounce box frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
1 large egg
1 pinch ground nutmeg
1 to 2 slices wheat bread, toasted and cut into triangles
Salt and pepper (for people portions only)

Directions
In a medium nonstick skillet, heat the EVOO over medium heat. For people portions, add the garlic and cook until fragrant, 30 seconds. Add the spinach and cook until heated through. Add the egg and stir to scramble, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the nutmeg. Top the toast with the spinach-egg mixture. Season people portions with salt and pepper.

Create Chinese "Fake-Out" For You (and Your Furry Friend)

The latest pet-friendly recipe from the November issue of Everyday Day With Rachael Ray uses your leftover rice to make Chinese Fake-Out for you (and your furry friend). Let your pooch take a small sample of the frozen veggies and egg combo mixed in with his regular kibble and add some grilled chicken on the side for you. Yum-o! Find the full recipe when you read more.

Chop! Chop! Fried Rice
Every Day With Rachael Ray (November 2008)

Ingredients

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
½ cup leftover white or brown rice
½ cup frozen peas and carrots, thawed
1 large egg, beaten

Directions
In a small skillet, heat the oil over high heat. Add the rice and cook until golden, about 4 minutes. Add the peas and carrots and toss to combine. Scoot the rice-vegetable mixture off to the side; add the egg to the pan and cook, stirring, until set, and then mix into the rice. Transfer to a bowl and let cool.

Rachael Ray Scoops the Stoup for Doggies' Delight

I'm not gonna lie but, when I saw this recipe, I had to do some research – what the heck is "stoup" anyway? Turns out it's a one pot meal thicker than soup and thinner than stew that sounds great for falling Fall temps. Mmmm. The latest pet-friendly recipe from the October issue of Everyday Day With Rachael Ray is Gulliver's Goblin Stoup with savory chicken and teeth-cleaning carrots created for Fido (in small portions, of course). Find the recipe when you read more.

Gulliver’s Goblin Stoup
Every Day With Rachael Ray (October 2008)

Ingredients

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)
2 carrots, grated
1 cup cooked shredded rotisserie chicken
3 black mission figs, chopped
1 pinch ground cinnamon
2 cups chicken broth or water
1 cup cooked brown rice

Directions
In a deep, medium skillet, heat the EVOO, 1 turn of the pan, over medium heat.

Add the carrots and cook until slightly softened, 3 to 4 minutes.

Add the chicken, figs and cinnamon and toss.

Stir in half of the chicken broth, then the rice and warm through, 3 to 4 minutes.

Stir in more broth, as needed, to make a slightly soupy mixture.

The look on this cav's face says it all – yum-o! Although, the pot pie is crustless (and served cooled to room temperature), I think pups will still love it even without the warm-your-tum or pie parts that I think of with this dish.

Learn how to make the veggie-filled, pet-friendly recipe from the September issue of Everyday Day With Rachael Ray when you read more.

Turkey Pot Hold-the-Pie
Every Day With Rachael Ray (September 2008)

Your K9 companion will get their fill of this crustless potpie! (It’s like comfort food for dogs!)

Ingredients

1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
¼ pound deli-sliced turkey, chopped
1 cup frozen peas and carrots, thawed
2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley

Directions
In a small skillet, heat the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour for 1 minute, then whisk in the chicken broth and bring to a boil over high heat. Lower the heat and simmer until thickened, 2 to 3 minutes.
Stir in the turkey, veggies and parsley and cook until heated through, 2 to 3 minutes. Let cool to almost room temperature, then serve.

Rachael Ray Rolls Out a Line of Pet Food

Since Rachael Ray is a big fan of making her own fresh food to feed her baby Isaboo and features pet friendly recipes in her magazine and on her website, I guess it was only a matter of time before she took the plunge into the pet food business!

Dubbed Nutrish, her specialty line of dog food is filled with 100 percent natural ingredients like her famous EVOO, real beef, chicken, veggies, oatmeal, vitamin E, calcium, and absolutely no byproducts. And what's better, a portion of the proceeds go to Rachael's Rescue, a nonprofit organization she founded to help animals in need. Now that's something I can get behind! And, not to be left out, her specialty line of cat food is coming soon!

Source

Doggie Tuna Casserole . . . It's What's for Dinner

There comes a time, most often when I'm ready to cook my dinner, when North magically appears in the kitchen. Although I've got pretty good immunity against his puppy-dog eyes, I know he wishes I was baking him up a doggie treat! Although he's all about my chicken, I've got little interest in his kibble, so I was happy to spot a pet-friendly recipe from the pages of Everyday Day With Rachael Ray that looks tasty enough for me to eat, too!

Found in the August issue, get the recipe for the yum-o meal when you read more.

Doggie Tuna Casserole
Every Day With Rachael Ray (August 2008)

Give your pooch a little lift during those dog day afternoons with this protein packed meal!

Ingredients

½ cup milk
One 6-ounce can tuna in water, drained
1 cup cooked egg noodles
½ cup frozen peas, thawed
2 tablespoons grated parmigiano-reggiano cheese

Directions
In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat. Mash in the tuna. Stir in the noodles, peas and cheese. Let cool.

Penny Cupcakes for Your Lil Pupcakes!

I think these treats look fab, not just because I love cupcakes, but also because North's birthday is only one month away! The Penny Cupcakes are named for a fave friend of Isaboo and are safe treats for pets . . . but still yummy enough for you, too! Found in the June/July issue of Every Day With Rachael Ray, get the recipe for yum-o spiced banana and carrot cakes when you read more.

Penny Cupcakes
Every Day With Rachael Ray (June / July 2008)

This confectionery creation is an adapted, healthier version of carrot-and-banana cake that you can share with your K-9 companion!

Ingredients

2 very ripe bananas, mashed
1 carrot, grated, plus more for garnish
1 large egg
¼ cup honey
4 cups whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon baking powder
6 ounces softened cream cheese, optional

Directions
Preheat the oven to 350°. Grease two 12-cup muffin pans. In a large bowl, mix together the mashed bananas, carrot, egg and honey; stir in 3 cups water.
In another large bowl, stir together flour, cinnamon, allspice, ginger and baking powder; mix into the carrot mixture.
Fill each muffin cup about three-quarters full. Bake until firm and dry, about 45 minutes. Let cool, then top each cupcake with more grated carrot and smear with cream cheese if desired.

Grrreat Chicken and Rice Cakes with Bacon

Am I the only one that remembers that commercial from the 90s for Beggin' Strips? When I saw this recipe from the May issue of Every Day with Rachael Ray, I couldn't help but recall that pooch screaming it's BACON! Well, hey, this time it really is. Pamper yourself and your pooch with these chicken and rice cakes with – you guessed it – bacon. Remember, this is just a special treat to be substituted for a snack or meal portion to keep him slim and trim. To see this yum-o recipe, read more.

Grrreat Chicken and Rice Cakes with Bacon
Every Day With Rachael Ray (May 2008)

Pamper yourself AND your pooch with Pup Cakes! These lip smacking savory bacon-rice patties will have owners (and even dogs) saying “Yum-O!”

Ingredients

1 cup chicken broth
½ cup rice
4 slices turkey bacon
2 large eggs, beaten
½ cup bread crumbs
Salt and pepper
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)
Sour cream (people’s portions only)
Salsa (people’s portions only)

Directions
In a medium saucepan, bring the chicken broth to a boil over high heat. Add the rice, lower the heat and simmer until tender, about 15 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl and let cool.

While the rice is cooking, in a medium nonstick skillet, cook the bacon over medium-high heat until crisp, about 5 minutes; drain on paper towels. Finely chop the bacon and add to the cooled rice. Reserve the skillet.

Mix the egg and bread crumbs into the rice mixture; season with salt and pepper. Shape into 4 equal-size patties.

In the reserved skillet, heat the EVOO, 2 turns of the pan, over medium heat. Add the rice cakes and cook for 4 minutes on each side. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving to your pup. Top the people’s portions with sour cream and salsa.

She's done it again – another delish dish for you and a dog from Every Day with Rachael Ray! Giving pups a lil helping of this veggie-laden meal can be a healthy treat for "peas and happiness." Remember, there can be too much of a good thing so be certain to give pets an appropriate portion of this recipe, substituting it for a snack or meal portion, not in addition, to keep pooches slim and trim. To see this yum-o recipe, read more.

Carrots-and-Peas Orzo
Every Day With Rachael Ray (April 2008)

This dish is delish for little ones as well as your pup. Kids will love its sweetness, plus it’s full of yum-o veggie power!

Ingredients

1 cup orzo
1 cup frozen peas
4 carrots, sliced
Drizzle of honey (optional)
½ cup grated parmigiano-reggiano cheese
Salt and Pepper (for people’s portions only)

Directions
Bring a medium pot of water to a boil, salt it, add the orzo, and cook until just before al dente, about 7 minutes. Add the peas and cook for 1 minute; drain and return the pasta and peas to the pot.
While the pasta is cooking, in a medium saucepan, cover the carrots with water and bring to a boil. Season with salt and cook until tender, about 12 minutes. Drain, reserving about ½ cup cooking water, then transfer the carrots to a food processor. Add the reserved cooking water and honey, if using, and process until smooth.
Stir the carrot puree into the pasta and peas. Stir in the parmigiano-reggiano. Portion out half for the dog and let cool before serving; season the people’s portion with salt and pepper.
