Remembering Socks: Former First Cat Dies

You may recognize this feline as a former "first pet" - Socks joined the Clinton family for both terms in the White House. After they left in early 2001, the kitty took up residence in Hollywood, MD, with Bill Clinton's secretary, Betty Currie. The cat was nearly 18 and battling lung cancer when Currie confirmed Socks's death this evening, saying that she was "heartbroken." The Scoop: First Cat Passes Away

I'm saddened to announce that one of the precious pets of the current first family has passed away – this cute cat died Sunday at the Executive Mansion at the age of 18. The lil girl had many names; she was originally called "India" after the former Texas Ranger baseball player, Ruben Sierra (nicknamed "El Indio"), before the then 9-year-old Barbara Bush renamed her "Willie" when she joined their family. When the twins went off to college in 2000, they left their cat at home in the White House with President and Mrs. Bush where she's lived ever since. Guess they're also fans of multiple pet names for precious pals, as this pet was also commonly called "Kitty" by the first family!

Biggest Headlines of 2008: The Tale (Tail?) of a First Puppy-to-Be

I can't think of any other dog that's been more anticipated by the general population than the yet-to-be chosen, announced, named, or introduced addition to the Obama family. If we're all so excited, wanting to share our opinions for their pet, can you imagine what lil Sasha and Malia are feeling?! I know this was my favorite Barack Obama moment of the year, so I've backtracked to round up some of my fave posts about one of the Biggest Headlines of 2008.

Barney's Barking, Biting Mad as His First Dog Term Ends Soon

Don't get jealous lil guy! Seems like Barney (one of the two Scotties belonging to George W. Bush) may sense that another pup – one that we haven't even seen yet! – is already at the top of everyone's list. This pup is still super-duper cute as is his terrier pal, Miss Beazley, both currently residing in the White House. See how Barney greeted an admiring fan, errr reporter, this morning in the video below.

I'd have to say my favorite part of last night's events, was when the president-elect announced to his young daughters, "Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House." Now, this wasn't news to me but many people haven't been following the Obamas' doggie decisions as carefully as I have. He originally made the promise that, no matter the outcome, a puppy would make them a party of five after the campaign was over . . . and now that means a canine will be also moving into the White House come January!

I can't decide when the pooch will join the family – before they move or after they're settled – and I'm not totally certain what type of dog it'll be. After all, Michelle Obama told Entertainment Tonight that they would be rescuing, but 10-year-old Malia seems set on a goldendoodle, a mixed (Golden Retriever/Poodle) pup that often warrants a higher price tag based on their hypoallergenic qualities (and did I mention the cute?!).

Who Did North Vote For?

Remember those political toys of "Bark Obama" and "John McCanine"? Well, before I voted, I decided to let North cast his ballot at home. Watch this video and tell me which toy he preferred. (It obviously doesn't need to correspond with our actual picks.)

Hmmm, both got kisses from my friendly pup. Maybe he wants a third-party candidate (an unknown dipped in peanut butter)? We'll have to wait and see the results!

Now I've already found a couple ways for him to rock (and eat) the vote, so I may just bring him along to the local fire station polling place next week.
