Wait isn't the saying "tastes like chicken"?! Regardless, for pets that eat shoes or clothing perhaps that's what they think when digging into a dish of kibble. Wine is definitely my weakness and, even though I've yet to share it with my pooch, I love the idea of this cork-designed placemat ($4.50). It's totally perfect for my wine cellar . . . errrr, I mean kitchen (but a girl can dream). Not only is the matching treat jar super cute, I think this dish mat would look perfect with a Whiner and Diner feeder up top. Is this subtle style perfect for the wine lovers in your life, too?

Take It "To-Go" With Ikea!

Let's set the scene: You're planning a weekend getaway, but you want to travel light. Not so light as to leave your precious Fido home, but light enough that you're not toting his fragile bowls, fluffy bed . . . or the kitchen sink. While there are plenty of pricey portable bowls for this purpose, check out one complete package from Ikea.

The Bästis 4-piece travel kit for dogs ($20) comes with two bowls - while I wouldn't recommend doing this for water, you can cinch and seal the food bowl for later or fold up both for your pocket. There's also a storage bag - I smell extra food or a few fave toys - and a bed base. You can combine that with a towel or folded blanket, if you don't want to lug the real thing, or do double-duty using the base as a placemat instead (to protect the hotel room's carpet from his sloshy sipping). No matter which way you spin it and how far your journey is, this twenty bucks goes a long way.

Dog Days of Summer: Ice, Ice Baby

It's amazing what a little (frozen) water can do! If your pet's confined to a crate on hot days – and I strongly recommend you take care to make sure there's A/C or a fan nearby – try placing a few reusable ice packs under his crate pad.The simplest way to do this – resealable plastic bags! I buy the largest, gallon-sized freezer bags, fill about 80 percent with water, zip up, and lay flat to freeze! Definitely be careful if your pup's nails aren't filed down – you don't want him to accidentally puncture it and end up in a pool of water. Even though I find the freezer bags to be the sturdiest, if you've got no limit to your budget, there's the official On-Ice Bag ($50 and up) favored to keep show dogs cool when they're not in the ring.

Many pups – like Samson – love to chase ice cubes (especially PB flavored) around the bowl with their tongues and adding these to water can keep them cool in the heat of the day. If you want to give them more long-lasting coolness, buy an extra stainless-steel water dish. In addition to a normal water bowl, freeze the second bowl 80 percent full of water to make an ice block. Leave both dishes on a pet's placemat so, as the day goes on, they'll have more chilly water to drink.

No, not dishes for you, silly! This dinnerware is aimed at the four-legged types. It seems that I'm stumbling across a ton of high-end pet food bowls lately, and I have to say that pet designer Kevy K. definitely brings the glam! Kevy K. specializes in luxurious and fashionable designs for your pets, working with materials like marble, stone, travertine, and leather to bring some unique looks to the placemat. One of my faves is this Green Onyx Food Bowl aimed at cats and toy dog breeds from the Senora line. Each plate is polished and hand-carved, and no two are alike. But, with a price tag of $190, this is one set that might have to remain on your wish list!

Bare Bones: Kitty Garden

I've seen these edible grass kits for cats popping up everywhere these days, and I knew (like dogs), grass can helps aid in digestion. What I didn't know was that a grass garden like this one from Cat Livin ($18), is loaded with a variety of oats, wheat, rye, and barley all-in-one, and naturally helps kitty rid herself of hairballs. Growing in 4-6 days, you can reuse the stainless steel container and replacement seeds are inexpensive at $5. It makes sense if your cat doesn't go out as much as your pooch, or is strictly indoors, that you bring the grass to her – and protect your hardwood with one of the three handy placemat ($15) patterns. Plus I'd like having a nice, green patch of grass inside my apartment – especially when living in a city where grass isn't always readily accessible (or sanitary)!
