The Scoop: Southwest Airlines Now Flies the Pet-Friendly Skies

For those frequent furry fliers, there's a new available airline in town - Southwest. Starting today, customers can purchase pet tickets for travel beginning on June 17. The P.A.W.S. program runs $75 each way for small, in-cabin dogs or cats.

The rules are pretty standard compared to other airlines - one carrier per person that counts as the carry-on - but there's no mention of the standard 20-pound weight limit ("The dog or cat must be able to stand up and turn around in the carrier with ease.") and each carrier can hold no more than two of the same species of small cats or dogs. So tiny pup owners wouldn't need to grab a pal to carry both dogs on board under the plan. Would this decision now make you choose Southwest over another airline?

The P@W (short for Pet At Work) is such a great way to tote a pet to the office, it's high on my latest items-to-lust-after list. Even though the official TYDTWDay isn't until June, I was so excited to spot this item, I just couldn't hold on 'til then.

The revolutionary travel system keeps your furry friend safely away from the rest of your bag's contents. It functions as a carrier – with a small detachable dome and comfy mat if you've got a meeting – and the separate, zippered section cushioned for your laptop and any paper work. What else do you need?! Oh yeah, that small pet to go inside.

Do You Agree With the Top 10 Cat-Friendly Cities?

Have you heard of CATalyst? Similar to the word the organization's title was no doubt inspired by, they seek to "change society’s image of cats as aloof and not needing human contact or care." Seems that, despite the growing popularity of felines as pets, they're less likely to see a vet as their canine counterparts. In order to increase awareness for addressing kitty needs, this organization just released a list of the top 10 metropolitan areas based on cat ownership per capita, level of veterinary care, microchipping and cat-friendly local ordinances. Spinach and Eggy Apps For You (and Your Little Dog, Too)

Still searching for the perfect New Year's Eve party appetizer? The latest pet-friendly recipe from the December/January issue of Everyday Day With Rachael Ray is a Gus-tini, a crostini named for a dog pal, Gus. There's some variation to the recipe depending on whether or not you're feeding people, or treating a pooch to a small bit. Find both when you read more.

Holiday Brunch Gus-tinis
Every Day With Rachael Ray (December/January 2009)

Ingredients

2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped (for people portions only)
Half of a 10-ounce box frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
1 large egg
1 pinch ground nutmeg
1 to 2 slices wheat bread, toasted and cut into triangles
Salt and pepper (for people portions only)

Directions
In a medium nonstick skillet, heat the EVOO over medium heat. For people portions, add the garlic and cook until fragrant, 30 seconds. Add the spinach and cook until heated through. Add the egg and stir to scramble, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the nutmeg. Top the toast with the spinach-egg mixture. Season people portions with salt and pepper.

Create Chinese "Fake-Out" For You (and Your Furry Friend)

Let your pooch take a small sample of the frozen veggies and egg combo mixed in with his regular kibble and add some grilled chicken on the side for you. Yum-o! Chop! Chop! Fried Rice
Every Day With Rachael Ray (November 2008)

Ingredients

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
½ cup leftover white or brown rice
½ cup frozen peas and carrots, thawed
1 large egg, beaten

Directions
In a small skillet, heat the oil over high heat. Add the rice and cook until golden, about 4 minutes. Add the peas and carrots and toss to combine. Scoot the rice-vegetable mixture off to the side; add the egg to the pan and cook, stirring, until set, and then mix into the rice. Transfer to a bowl and let cool.

Rachael Ray Scoops the Stoup for Doggies' Delight

I'm not gonna lie but, when I saw this recipe, I had to do some research – what the heck is "stoup" anyway? Turns out it's a one pot meal thicker than soup and thinner than stew that sounds great for falling Fall temps. Mmmm. The latest pet-friendly recipe from the October issue of Everyday Day With Rachael Ray is Gulliver's Goblin Stoup with savory chicken and teeth-cleaning carrots created for Fido (in small portions, of course). Gulliver’s Goblin Stoup
Every Day With Rachael Ray (October 2008)

Ingredients

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)
2 carrots, grated
1 cup cooked shredded rotisserie chicken
3 black mission figs, chopped
1 pinch ground cinnamon
2 cups chicken broth or water
1 cup cooked brown rice

Directions
In a deep, medium skillet, heat the EVOO, 1 turn of the pan, over medium heat.

Add the carrots and cook until slightly softened, 3 to 4 minutes.

Add the chicken, figs and cinnamon and toss.

Stir in half of the chicken broth, then the rice and warm through, 3 to 4 minutes.

Stir in more broth, as needed, to make a slightly soupy mixture.
