This (New) Home: Summa Canum, the Obama Dog House

Perfect for a dog living in the actual White House, the eco-tastic Sustainable Pet Design created this habitat as a gift for the Obama family's future pet. Consisting of donated materials as part of Project Summa Canum (Latin for "top dog"), the house even has presidential origins – it's made with wood from Tennessee Aromatic Cedar trees that Andrew Jackson planted along the driveway of his estate, The Hermitage. This white house looks pretty amazing – see the sandblasted logo on the back – and I can't wait to find out what kind of pooch will be living inside!

It's been a while since we've toured a droolworthy pet home, but this one takes the cake, errrr, coffee. I know if I ever needed a doghouse, this one would be the foam topping on my list. After all, I love coffee and what a snarky way to acknowledge my Starbucks habit by treating North to this caffeine-free abode – his handcrafted Starbarks franchise rings in at $300 on Etsy, are you buying in?!

Not only can you bathe with fish and travel to sleep with fish, but you can also keep your hands clean while looking at fish! This Italian made Moody Aquarium Sink is perfect for those aquatically obsessed folks who believe you can never have too many aquariums, or those who have the spare $4,700 to toss in for a truly unique wash basin!

But if you don't want to subject your fish to sink confinement – thankfully, there are proper filtration and pumps included – you can choose to fill the sink with sand to create your very own Zen garden. Either way, I think it would look pretty snazzy in a bathroom, but I'm a little worried about the upkeep. How the heck do you clean this thing!?

This (New) Home: Cool Pet House

It's been a while since a fab pet house caught my eye . . . maybe not since Petchitecture! Coming from Down Under, this aptly-named Cool Pet House was created by the equally clever "Funky Pets International." This new abode has fans to keep pooch cool in Summer and temperature controls to make the home toasty in Winter . . . with a remote to set it all. Hey, this home even boasts indoor lighting (for pup to do his homework by?), and a wireless webcam to make sure he's not goofing off while you're away. There's no price listed on the site, so if Fido wants this for his very own, ~~he'll~~ you'll have to call long distance to Australia and ask them yourself!

For the latest installment of hip homes for animals, check out the Sweet Home line from Osso & Co.The brocade cabana houses come in two sizes (priced $279-$299) and totally look like a chichi version of North's kitty pup tent. This product can easily do double duty if your pet is still not so keen on sleeping inside his bed, the lever style roof can be opened up to store toys inside, and the canvas door cover can be rolled down for an substitute toy box. If you're dreaming of farm animals but you're lacking the farm, these enclosed homes are perfect for backyard egg layers! Your pet chicken won't feel cooped up in a classy eglu, and she'll have a detachable, fenced (fox-proof!) run for more strutting. Created by UK-based Omlet, there are two models – chickens and rabbits – offered stateside. Each chicken eglu ($515 including two birds and $495 without) includes a slide-out tray for cleaning, a roosting area, and a nesting box . . . if you're dreaming of omelets for real, you can run out to collect eggs from your own property and get started in the kitchen!

I'm happy to see a couple of these nice homes in the US and I'm hoping more will become available here soon. Last year, the company released that Eglu Cube (seen at the top left) and even offers useful Omlet courses run by an "eggsperienced egluowner" in England (ha!) to cover all the everyday skills required to look after your new feathered friend.

This (New) Home: Scottie's Fine Art Caves

For the pet that has everything, and the owner who doesn't want to sacrifice her home's landscaping for a more traditional-looking doggy abode, enter the prettiest (and priciest) pup houses I've seen to date. Scottie's Fine Art Caves are pet residences inspired by natural materials found around British Columbia, Canada. Each of the three models (Browning Passage, Cannery Bay, and Vargas Island) use a pine root or cedar branch as the focal point of the design attached to a reinforced papier-mâché stone. The models are very spacious (the largest offers a 4-foot-square sleeping area), and allow pets to stretch out in privacy or to keep watch over your backyard (or living room) from a piece of in-home sculpture.

With my luck, North would confuse this house for an actual stone (the above model even comes with that little "sidekick rock") and decide to pee all over it. But, for those of you with nonterritory markers and money to spare, these puppy caves cost upwards of $5,900 excluding shipping - and when the homes weigh around 200 lbs. each, I'm guessing that's not gonna come standard-mail either. It's still fun to dream so check out all the models in a widget when you read more.

The company will design a house catering to a pet's personal tastes or style, their fairy-tale wishes, or even make a mini replica of your own home! The base price starts around $4,500, but that's before interior designing and furnishing . . . and, if you want to use your own plan to pimp their crib, then those figures can easily reach $20,000 before you know it. Sometimes, however, it's just about getting in touch with their roots - this Bernese Mountain Dog makes his home in Southern California yet is sitting outside his very own replica Swiss chalet, 35-square-feet of pseudo-mountaintop heaven! This is a tad excessive for North and I at this stage in our lives, but most of you agree that a doggie mansion is where you'd most likely put your excess million, so if you hit the jackpot, your pooch will, too!
