I have to admit, I was a little skeptical when receiving a tester of Pepper & Tanky pet perfume in the mail. But, after hearing about LilPeaPod's experience, I may just give my bottle of "Big Dog" a try next time North and I hit the town and don't have time for a full-on bath! She writes:

Is it just me or is Daisy looking better than ever these days?! Looks like the maltipoo got a trim to share the spotlight at Jessica Simpson's perfume launch in Dallas over the weekend – after all the fragrance is called "Fancy" so could she bring along a pup with a sloppy cut? I think not.I know North would remain atop that table for about one second . . . followed by breaking glass and his dive into the audience for kisses. Spoiled Sweet or Spoiled Rotten: Pet Perfumes?

I know a girl likes to smell fresh, but is spritzing your pets with specialized "pawfume" taking it too far? I've seen a number of perfumes pop up over the past few seasons aimed at making your four legged BFFs smell sweet, while still maintaining their natural pH balance.

Sexy Beast's ($65) line of care products gives you a number of ways to show your pets some love, while stocking their fragrance with hints of vanilla, nutmeg, and citrus. However, Juicy Couture's version of their über-popular brand gives us Juicy Crittoure Dog Pawfume ($60) that is strangely void of description! Has anyone smelled it? There must be a lot of sniffing going on, so tell me, spoiled sweet or rotten?

3 Things to Do Before Cleaning Dogs' Ears

Keeping clean is key, especially for doggies with droopy ears - dirt and bacteria can get trapped inside, multiply, and cause an infected disaster. Yuck. Now, I always recommend checking with a vet to make sure the problem isn't serious, plus get tips on the best way to squirt and swap ears down, but don't forget to do these three things before you get started:

Clean under your nails. Time to dig out any dirt and grime from under your nails with a file and make sure there are no jagged edges that could hurt your pooch.

Wash your hands. Of course you'd think to wash your hands after, but scrub your hands under running water before you get started with an antibacterial, fragrance-free soap.
Do not apply anything else. Refrain from adding perfume or lotion when you're done, and, if you had it on before, make sure it's totally gone.

Pet Peeves: Can I Put My Moisturizer on My Dogs' Paws?

Q: My dog's paw pads are super dry, so dry they're nearly cracking. I know cold weather is coming soon and this will worsen - can I rub some of my lotion or Vaseline on them?

A: I commend your concern for bow owwies on the paw pads but you need to be careful what you rub him down with. Maybe you also want to sweeten them up, corn chip smell and all, but step away from your perfumed lotion! Search for a good pad moisturizer (Samson likes Opie and Dixie's healer) or ask your vet if the problem is severe. Not only can human hand moisturizer soften the pads too much for extra slips or slides, but the ingredients may also be harmful if ingested (read: licked).

Use This Kitchen Item For a Waterless, Sudsless Doggie Bath

Lemme guess the worst part of pet bath time at your house: that water shook all over you, a telltale wet dog smell, or perhaps holding your pet still enough to rinse out the shampoo? Seems many of my trickiest times come from water anyway. While there's perfume and waterless spray shampoo in a pinch, there's another household product found in your kitchen: cornstarch!

I remembered this useful item when checking out last Saturday's Groomer Has It, where they had to clean dogs with no water, soap, tub, or dryer, and worked with this. If you want to save money with a DIY, get my steps to get started when you read more.

Grab a large towel, or several towels, depending on the size of your dog. Lay them out to form your workspace and an easier area to clean up.
Sprinkle a small amount of cornstarch all over your pooch and rub it in like a massage. A little goes a long way - not even two tablespoons on all of North - and continue until you've covered his whole body.
Using a comb, comb out the cornstarch and follow with a good brushing, if desired.
Wipe off your pooch and he's as good as clean . . . for now anyway.

If there is one guarantee in life (well, besides death and taxes), it's that your dog is gonna get dirty. . . and stinky. Five Simple Ways To Cut Pet Costs

Now more than ever, cutting costs is becoming a way of life. I know my drive up to the Napa Valley a few weekends ago cost me a bundle in gas – even though my car is pretty gas friendly – which in turn had me cutting corners the rest of the week to make up for the price of filling the tank. Of course, when it comes to North, I'll spare no expense if he needs something, however these days you may not find me adding a doggie perfume into my virtual shopping cart just for the heck of it. We can all use a crash course in how to cut back our living costs, whether it be due to the economy, because we want to save up for a rainy day, or maybe you're a closet penny pincher who loves finding great deals. Whatever the reason, I have a few simple tips that you can incorporate easily into your daily routine that can help you save some cash on pet costs.

Keep a list of things that your pet needs in order from highest priority to lowest. This way, you can keep focused and not get distracted by those bling'd out Flexi's (that you could totally DIY and save some money in the process) while you should be focusing on getting him a new bed.
Keep an eye out for my Online Sale Alerts, and search around for your own. Sites like RetailMeNot and CurrentCodes keep you on top of sales so you can get what you want for less.
Check your local dollar stores for pet toys. There's usually one close to major grocery stores, so next time you're out shopping, make a point to stop in and check it out. Keep in mind that not all cheap toys are cheaply made. If you're on the lookout, you can often get some pretty durable toys at those dollar stores that carry goods from bigger box stores. You just might find some diamonds in the "ruff"!
It goes without saying, but be proactive about your pet's health. Get all necessary vaccinations and check ups on time to prevent problems (and higher expenses) down the road.
Do as much grooming on your own as possible. Taking your pet in for a nail clipping is much more cost effective than taking her in for the works!
