St. Patty's Day Treats For Your Four-Legged Friends

Although Samson isn't Irish (obvs), that didn't stop LilPeaPod from making her little guy some special St. Patrick's Day treats to enjoy so he wasn't left out of the celebration fun. She sent in a few photos, and describes how she made the Irish bars with one of my household's favorite ingredients: peanut butter! She writes:

After attending the St. Patrick's Day parade this weekend in San Francisco, I had enough Irish treats and Guinness to last me a week! Since this was Samson's first St. Patty's Day, I didn't want to leave the little guy out of the fun, and decided to make a green-themed treat for him. I took the Peanut Butter and Oatmeal Cookie recipe you posted last year, and cut them into small, bite sized bars. As you can see, I added to the recipe by topping the cookies with a cream cheese and honey frosting. With just a few drops of organic food coloring that I found at my local Whole Foods, I got the nice green tint. It was super easy to make, and my little guy gobbled them up!

Peanut Butter and Oatmeal Cookies For You and Fido

Great tasting cookies that are safe for your pup, and will appeal to your palette as well.

Ingredients

2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 tablespoons of sesame seed oil
1 cup peanut butter-creamy or chunky
1 cup low-fat milk
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups of uncooked oatmeal
Honey (no more than 1/2 cup) – as a yummy extra

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Grease cookie sheet(only 1 needed)
3. Put 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 cup milk, 2 eggs and 2 tablespoons of oil in a bowl, mix well.
4. Heat peanut butter and honey(together) in microwave for 30 seconds and mix into bowl mentioned in #3.
5. Pour 2 cups of oatmeal into bowl and mix well.
6. Pour and spread into cookie sheet.
7. Take 1/2 cup oatmeal and spread on the top and tap down with fork to make it stick when done cooking.
8. Bake for 25 minutes, longer if you want them crispy.
9. Hot or cold, cut treats into 3-inches by 1 1/2-inches and store in sealed container.

Doggie Friendly Cream Cheese Frosting
Original Recipe

Great topping for your pet-friendly cookies!

Ingredients

5 ounces of low fat cream cheese
1 tablespoon of vanilla
1 tablespoon of honey

Directions
Mix cream cheese, canola oil, vanilla, and honey in a bowl. For color, use one or two drops of food coloring. Frost cookies with mixture and enjoy!

Since he gets treated to the freshly ground stuff, I know that's safe . . . but, take note, of the PB related recall of PetSmart's "Grreat Choice® Dog Biscuit" products that contain peanut paste made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA).

Peanut Butter Ice Cubes Will Keep Pup Cool and Happy

With the temps rising (and the fact that North and I would eat just about anything containing peanut butter) I was excited to try a few of the peanut butter goodies that my new Organic Dog Biscuit Cookbook – a July Must Have – offered up. Cool Peanut Butter Cubes For Dogs

Hot days are in full effect, so keep your pup cool with these yummy peanut butter ice cubes.

Ingredients

3 cups Plain Non-Fat Yogurt
1 cup Unsalted Peanut Butter
1 tbsp. Honey

Directions
Combine all ingredients and whisk thoroughly. Pour mixture into ice cube trays and freeze solid (at least two hours).
Serve to your pup one cube at a time for some seriously enjoyable icy cool treats!

Doggie Treats That Look Good Enough to Eat!

I've been known to tinker around in the kitchen and whip up some peanut butter treats for North and I from time to time, and sometimes I even try my hand at making something with carob, a pet-safe replacement for chocolate. But I must be seriously lacking in the baking creativity department because these treats put mine to shame.

On a recent trip to the Napa Valley, I found these superb looking dessert treats from Kool Dog Kafe at chic pet store Fideaux in St. Helena that look like real Peanut Butter Cups! I'm not only getting a craving for the real thing now, but I'm definitely ordering a bunch of these for North's upcoming birthday! Hooray for National Cookie Day! All too often, I can't find the time to bake up special snacks for myself but, when I do have a moment to spare, I love making treats for North. After all, that keeps me safe from those extra calories! I'm not a fan of preparing food that involves meat so this recipe is still a surefire hit with me. . . and with my lil' guy. With only four ingredients, no extra trip to the store is needed!

Simple Simon's Birthday Bones

From the Three Dog Bakery Cookbook

2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup natural peanut butter
1 cup skim milk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk. Add wet mixture to dry, and mix well. Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll out to 1/4-inch thick and cut out shapes. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake 20 minutes or until lightly brown. Cool on a rack then store in an airtight container.
Makes 30 large bones

Feed the Birds: Make Your Own Peanut Butter Suet

Chickadee is one of my favorite words to say. Chickadee, chickadee, chickadee! So I know these birds (along with woodpeckers, goldfinches, thrushes, bluebirds, and wrens) like peanut butter suet . . . the problem, what in the heck is suet?! After consulting a dear friend (read: google), I learned that it's raw beef or sheep fat. I eat neither beef, nor sheep, so I was at a standstill about where to find such a thing – and whether or not I'd even want to touch it.

Imagine my delight when I found a recipe for peanut butter suet – sounds a lot less scary, and OMG, I've got tons of PB. To see how to make this treat in plastic containers, little balls, or even rolled in wire mesh for birds to come pecking, read more.

Peanut Butter (Suet) Cakes
Birds Amoré

Ingredients

1-36-oz. jar all-natural crunchy peanut butter (without "partially hydrogenated oil")
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 3/4 cups corn meal (medium grind)
1/2 cup sunflower chips
1/4 cup chopped dried fruit (optional)

Directions
Using a mixer, thoroughly blend the peanut butter and maple syrup. Add the corn meal and blend well. Adjust the amount of corn meal so you can knead in the sunflower chips without the mixture sticking to your hands. The mixture should be shiny and tacky and resemble bread dough.

Divide mixture evenly into three portions. Press mixture firmly into three plastic 4 ¼" x 4 ¼" x 1 ¼" containers or press the mixture onto a screened peanut butter log.

Storage: Cover containers with foil and freeze until ready for use. You can also make peanut butter balls by rolling teaspoons of the mixture into balls and freeze them. They make great treats for your special birds.

The Scoop: Skunks Love Peanut Butter, Too

Mmmm, peanut butter. Not only is it one of my pup's favorite snacks (along with my own), apparently even skunks can't get enough as one unassuming Tulsa mail carrier spotted a stuck skunk in a ~~pickle~~ jar and called for backup. It took her a while to reach the proper party - no joke, called "The Skunk Whisperer" - which was enough time for news crews to come and capture the big rescue. Did everybody make it through unharmed and unsprayed? Watch the video and see for yourself.

On The Ball: Peanut Butter Bones

I'm counting the hours until the kickoff of this year's Puppy Bowl festivities! There's sure to be hours of fun watching the adorable little pooches run around the field. I have all the people food planned out for the Super Bowl party, so now all that's left to do is get some super snacks ready for North. Since we all know he's peanut butter's number one fan, I've decided to make him some special P.B. bones for the big P.B. day. And don't think I've forgotten the cats! Peanut Butter Bones

From Two Dog Press

1 package dry yeast
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 cup mashed potatoes
1 cup milk
1/4 cup molasses
1/2 cup chicken stock
1 cup chunky peanut butter
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup rye flour
1/2 cup rice flour
1 egg
2 cups all-purpose white flour

Directions:
Preheat oven to 325 ° F (165 ° C). In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in lukewarm water. In a large saucepan, mix together the potatoes, milk, molasses, stock and peanut butter. Heat, stirring frequently until boiling. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. Add yeast mixture. Gradually blend in the egg, wheat, rye and rice flours. Add enough white flour to form a stiff dough. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead until smooth (about three to five minutes). Shape the dough into a ball and roll out to 1/2-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out biscuits. Place on ungreased baking sheets, spacing them about 1/4 inch apart. Gather up the scraps, roll out again, and cut additional biscuits. Bake for 45 minutes. Let cool overnight. Makes several dozen bones that freeze well, with the consistency of pizza crusts. A favorite snack for most spoiled dogs!
