Mar 16 2009 - 2:00pm A spokesperson for Oprah Winfrey confirmed to People Pets that one of the puppies Oprah showcased on her show, Ivan, died over the weekend. Apparently Sadie, Oprah's newly adopted cocker spaniel who the world met last week, is also being treated for the virus and “is getting stronger.”
According to veterinarians, puppies around the country are suffering from a new strain of the disease called Canine Parvovirus Type 2c. Little Sadie was exposed to Ivan before her second shot so she is being treated with "plasma from hyperimmunized healthy dogs” (as you can see from the picture Oprah shared on her show) as a precaution.
My cousin got a puppy in August and he died from Parvo a week after they got him... my dog had met their new puppy so I had to go get her tested...argh what a nightmare! Even if your dog has
it's shots I recommend keeping them away from any new puppies who have not yet been vaccinated!
Bond Girl, thanks for pointing that out. A lot of people assume that only puppies are at risk when being introduced to other dogs before all their shots are in. I've had a couple of friends
fully grown dogs (who've had all their shots) get sick from catching something from puppies (most recently my cousin's sweet pitbull got puppy warts at a dog run where some silly owner had
brought her pup who wasn't done with all her shots). It's dangerous for both puppies and dogs!
There is a reason vet's tell new puppy owners not to walk their dogs outside until they've had all their shots, they can get parvo from the ground if it's infected. People, please take extra
care of your pups because trust me it's absolutely heart-breaking to have your pup or dog die.
My dog died from this~~ I was a little kid and got a black lab puppy for christmas. As soon as we got it we noticed he was vomiting and had bad diarrhea. We put him in the hospital like 3
days after christmas and a week after new years he had passed away. It's sooo sad and heart breaking!
Parvo is also carried on the bottom of your shoes. I have a holistic vet, who vaccinates very little, but urged the parvo, since I work in a Store where pets come and go.
I wish, though, that Oprah would focus more on the fact that these pups were probably sick because they were rescued from crowded puppy mills. I understand that some people want full breed
dogs, but the puppy mills are destroying the most popular breeds and the dogs themselves. The good breeders should be rewarded by not having to compete with puppy mills. Surprisingly to me,
the Amish have become some of the worst offenders! What a great controversial show that would be for Oprah!

2Very sad. But pretty inevitable that a new strain of parvovirus would occur.
3this is terrible! he was so so so cute
4that's so sad! our shelter recently had a parvo outbreak
5Scary! our vet said to be very careful with the new puppy bc parvo has been around a lot lately. This is both really scary and really sad!
6We've had a lot of parvo around here too. I know a lot of people who have had their puppies die or get very, very sick. So sad.

9Poor lady. Isn't this her third dog to die in just a couple years? That's more than I think I could cope with.
