What's Your Take: Did JFK Cats Receive a Death Sentence?

I remember the story of the "JFK cats" from last year: back in October, the Port Authority announced that they were rounding up the feral cats surrounding the New York airport and sending them to shelters. That, of course, caused an outcry as shelters cannot really handle any more animals . . . especially the virtually un-adoptable feral cats. Animal advocates called for a more humane trap, neuter, and return process to save the animals' lives and allow them to remain in their habitats. However, the authority recently decided to halt that program and focus on rounding up the cats instead.

"They are telling folks that they are trying to adopt these animals out, but that is patently not true," said Patrick Kwan, New York state director of the Humane Society of the United States. "These animals cannot be adopted out. This is an extermination program that sentences them to death."

The authority originally said that the cats pose a threat to aircraft operation and that the 5,000-acre airport is no place for these feral felines. While I can understand the dangers of – and to – the cats if they remain, I have to agree that gathering them up and placing them in shelters does not seem to be a final solution with a happy ending. Adam Lippes Adoption Extravaganza

Seems like another designer wants to lend a helping hand with dog adoptions! Adam Lippes will partner with the ASPCA from April 4 to 6, and host an adoption event right in his Manhattan boutique! Representatives will be on hand to facilitate adoptions of these needy doggies, about 20 of various breeds and sizes will frolic in the windows of the store. What's more is that any shopper choosing to give one of these pups a forever home will receive this limited edition "ADAM Loves Dogs" tee. Adam himself will even be attending on April 5 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and has said, "I can only hope that all of these dogs will find loving homes and will be surprised if I don't walk away with one of them myself."

Out and About: New York's Prospect Park

Brooklyn’s Prospect Park is just one of the many parks in New York that's open to dogs, but it also features an especially cohesive community of pet lovers. They've joined to form local organization, FIDO (Fellowship in the Interest of Dogs and their Owners), and welcome off-leashed dogs on the first Sunday of every month for coffee, goodies, and good, ol’ fun for the pooches to help spread the word about animal-related news, rules, and other events. The park itself features many wide-open, roaming spaces with off-leash hours (in the evenings and early mornings), and even has a Dog Beach for those Summer nights.

Typically, there are four types of rules established in NYC parks - no dogs allowed; leashed dogs allowed, off-leashed dogs permitted (usually during certain hours only), and off-leashed dogs allowed in separate, fenced-in dog runs within the park. The Parks Department keeps a location list of the dog runs and their rules for all five boroughs to let pet people stay up to date. That way, when it's time to play, you'll both know where to go!

Out and About: New York's Z Spot

If you have a pampered pal, you must make a stop at Z Spot! This store stocks nearly any and every extravagant item you can imagine for your pets. Part of Zitomer (which also includes the huge Zittles toy floor and Z Next Door for chic accessories), Z Spot is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I made a special trip here on North's first birthday – it's a great wishful thinking wonderland and celebration destination when the animal in your life is celebrating a special occasion. Unfortunately they don't have an online store that does their selection justice at this point but, if you're in New York, make your way over there to ooh and ahh over the baubles, bones, and beds for the furry ones.

Has Anyone Tried the New Everyday Isle of Dogs Line?

Hello everyone, I have a Yorkiepoo and I have tried Isle of Dogs couture shampoos and conditioners in the past and loved them. I recently was at Petco in New York where we live and saw they have a new Everyday line and new treats and was wondering if anyone else tried them yet? I found Isle of Dogs on Facebook and, from what I read, people seem to be loving the new stuff. I did ask for a catalog on Facebook and some samples come with it, I guess. I am just wonder if anyone else has tried the stuff and if they like it?

Real Housewives of NYC Do Tell: Pets Have Enemies, Too?

Seems like Ginger the Chihuahua doesn't like anyone but mom . . . and that includes daughter, Ally. Uh oh. While Jill does hire a trainer to work on these issues on an episode of the Real Housewives of New York City, I can't help but recall my friend's grandmother's pooch that would growl and snarl at everyone who came by other than Nonna herself. I'm curious to know, if your pet doesn't like someone, how does he behave? Do tell in your comments below!

The Scoop: Gerard Butler in the Middle of a Dog Fight

Nope, not a cat fight - the sometimes heartbreaker Gerard Butler had a furry run-in with the law in NYC on Monday. TMZ is reporting more details on the dog fight involving the actor's smooshy, who we've glimpsed frequenting the set of The Bounty (along with fan fave, Norman).

Gerard's off-leash Lolita was allegedly attacked street side by a Greyhound, Mayfly, which caused the actor to push away the offending animal . . . and later bring his Pug to a vet for injuries. Although the Greyhound's owners claim that Gerard smacked one of their dogs without cause, no charges have been pressed and all the involved pups are OK.

I understand the illegality of having a pup off leash but, as someone who's had her dog attacked unprovoked as a puppy, it's a split-second reaction and a scary thing for all parties involved - do you think there's more to this story?
