Did You Pick Your Pet's Name Before the Animal Itself?

Coming up with a name that's just right is a tough process! Some of us one day dream of owning a pet with a particular moniker while others wait until we meet an animal before starting the naming process. I planned on calling North "Piper" until I picked him up and decided that simply didn't fit and a community member enlisted our help to come up with a name for this precious face - how did the process work for you?

Cute cat, right? Look closely to see something poking out of that lil mouth - the kitty not only has a tooth coming out on top, "Snag L. Tooth" has the number one wackiest cat name chosen from VPI Pet Insurance's database of over 470,000 insured pets!

According to owner, Alison Reppel they started referring to him by Snags, "not only because it describes him physically but also because it suited his personality. He gets into little snags all around the house, knocking over pots and pans or ripping apart any cardboard that we may leave sitting around.” Ha!

Which Presidential Surname's Most Popular For Pets?

Pets get names in the strangest ways – trust me, North knows – be it from a person, place, thing, or something else entirely. Well, Veterinary Pet Insurance (the country's largest and oldest provider), recently took tally of their 477,000 registered pets to see how many shared surnames with US presidents. After taking out ones that could double as fairly traditional human names – like Madison and Jackson – they counted up the number of dogs, cats, birds, and other exotic pets that had names in common with presidents. I'll clue you in to this: the first (Washington) and most recently departed (Bush) leaders didn't make it, but has our current president entered the top 10 yet? Find out who tops this list (then vote for your favorite) in this slideshow.

What's in a name? A lot, clearly. Veterinary Pet Insurance, the country's largest and oldest provider, tallied to the top 10 most popular dog and cat names from its database of over 466,000 insured pets. Granted, there are tons of animals out there that are uninsured, but I can think of creatures with nearly each of these popular names that I either know personally, or that belong to a celebrity pet owner.

Would You Call Your Grown Dog a Puppy?

Over the weekend, I told someone I just met that I had a puppy when asked if I had roommates. My pal overheard and was quick to point out that North is a grown dog.

I wasn't being intentionally deceitful (after all my parents still refer to only-child-me as "the baby" and I'm far from it), and I meant it more affectionately than realistically. Do you ever refer to your pet as a puppy, kitten or other (dare I say) pet names regardless of age? Shh, the poll's anonymous so your secret's safe with me.

What's Your Take: Is It Okay to Name Pets After People?

One of YumSugar's friends sent word that she is traveling to San Diego to adopt an adorable pug named Hurley, who will be the mascot for her company. The dog is beyond cute (he's seen here dressed as a pudgy spider last Halloween) and I must admit, he does look a bit like his namesake, Lost's Jorge Garcia. Do you think it's fair to name pets after people (or characters) if it's an act of love?

Do Tell: What Was the Name of Your First Pet?

While vegging on the couch over the weekend, I caught a rerun of The Real Housewives of New York City. Just joining one of the families was a new ($1,800) West Highland White Terrier puppy named Aston. With some skepticism (and sarcasm), the Countess LuAnn de Lesseps and fam discuss the reasoning behind the name and mention adding another pup named Martin before picking up the car. Surely, a second dog (and Aston Martin) are not beyond a Count's budget, but hey, who knows?! While the son earnestly agrees with the dad's name, and I've heard of many different reasons for naming a pet, I couldn't help but wonder if the name of this pooch was entirely the boy's choice. After all, I named my first dog Joey after a boy I had a crush on in preschool. Now I'd love to hear the name of your first pet in the comments below!

Help DearSugar Name New Kittens!

How adoro are these two?! DearSugar's mom just added the lil preciouses to her family - the aqua-eyed Tonkinese made the trip up from Fresno and are now settling in nicely at their new home. The duo arrived yesterday but there's one big problem . . . or two, rather. They're so adorable that she can't decide what to name them!

To make it easier for myself, I'm gonna creatively refer to these babies as "one" and "two. " The feisty kit on the right ("one") is trying to claim her throne as queen of the household and prances around like she owns the place. But I think soon "two" (on the left) may stage an attack - this cat may be smaller and more timid, but she has a big, bold voice and is already meowing up a storm. So, as classy as my temporary names are, Dear's mom wants something a little more fitting for their beauty. Can you help out? If you've got name ideas, leave them in your comments below. I'll keep you posted on the naming process!
