Celeb Redo: A Better Doggie Bag For Susan Sarandon

I love to see celebs getting snuggly with their pooches, so how delighted was I to catch this glimpse of Susan Sarandon and her lil Maltese?! Even so, I'm less pleased to witness the furry-pal-inside-purse phenom later that night.

Granted, the two were attending Longchamp's 60th Anniversary celebration in NYC, so the Legende Satchel was a must-have, but where's a proper tote for her precious pet, Penny? Next time, hopefully she'll carry that metallic trend with an appropriate luxe, gold (dog) bag like these below.

Dog Days of Summer: How to Remove Burrs

More prevalent in late Summer and early Fall, burrs can be an unnecessary parting gift from woodsy walks. Rumored to have inspired the creation of Velcro, the hooks and teeth on this seed are super tricky to get off clothing, so imagine how it would stick to a pet!

After frolicking in the forest, rub your hands all over your pet for a cockleburr check - if you feel the telltale bump, isolate and de-tangle with your hands until you're able to get a good grasp of it. Now don't fret, follow my removal tips when you read more.

Teasing works only on tiny sections at a time so concentrate on the biggest snarls first. Firmly grasp the burr in one hand, and use a metal comb to separate the hairs by brushing in small strokes towards your pet's skin.
If your pup's long-haired or the burrs are tiny, you can slicker brush them out by brushing away from your pet's skin.
For major snarls, generously apply some Mink Oil spray for dogs if you have it (or vegetable oil, if you don't) to slick the fur and help with the combing. After you've removed it, wash the area or bathe your pooch.
When all the above tactics fail, use scissors to cut as close to the burr as possible and snip it out.

Nicodemus Is a Feline Flier With Evan Rachel Wood

It's not everyday we see a celebrity with her cat - it isn't that they get any less love, it's just not commonplace to bring them out in public for potty breaks and walks around the block.

Except at the airport since, when travels include that kitty companion, out their lil heads pop. This cute cat gets a helping hand out of his Sherpa (naturally) at LAX yesterday.

There's a couple extra tips to remember when flying with a feline so check them out - along with more pictures of Nicodemus and Evan Rachel Wood - when you read more.

Pick a bag. It's much easier to get a cat out of a carrier with both top and side exits. This way you can decide if she's rather be coaxed out . . . or if you need to go in after her.

Pack snacks. It's likely your pet will be freaked out by the noise and commotion so have alluring snacks to let the cat out of the bag (ha ha).

Reign her in. I'd recommend picking up a kitty harness for the flight so it's easier to get a strong grip on a cat while you walk her through security. If a metal ring makes the detector go off, they may ask you to hand the cat through and scan the harness with a wand.

Tips For a Pet-Safe New Year's Eve Party!

If you're throwing (or attending) a New Year's Eve bash with a furry friend, beware of the dangers of those festive decorations! Even if you wanna take a photo of your pet perhaps wearing a party hat like this fella, take it off immediately afterwards. Not only is it dangerous if he decides to munch on the paper, but the elastic string can choke your pal or lodge in his throat if he decides to eat his entire costume. Please also beware of the following things:

Noisemakers. I don't know about your pet, but North ran away the first (and only) time anyone blew one of these noisemaking horns in my home. I don't know if it was the loud sound, or the popping out, but my pup looked at me like I was crazy and ran into the next room. Never again.

Confetti. Just like tree tinsel is dangerous, metallic confetti and other lil bits of paper can still cluster in a pet's throat or tummy. Be on the safe side, and keep this unsafe stuff out of the house!
Hanging Decorations. Streamers and balloons can get stuck in a furry friend's intestinal tract so keep them up high and don't leave an animal unsupervised in a room with these things.
Alcohol. I hope I don't really need to remind you of this, but alcohol is not for pets. While I'm sure no responsible animal owner would offer this substance to a pet, parties can result in spills or left out cups that pets may try to lick. Make sure this liquid (and any poisonous foods like chocolate) is faaar out of the reach of your pet's nose and tongue.

New Product Alert! The (Improved) Hepper Pod Bed

Don't get me wrong, I loved the original version of the Hepper Pod Beds, but I'm loving this incarnation even more. Let me explain why:

A liner is now removable (washable for "accidents"!) and reversible in snuggy sherpa and smooth microfiber.
The improved metal frame features two legs to make it more stable and a larger entry hole both perfect for those fluffier or chunkier cats and small dogs.
There's prettier color combinations, too! I'm loving the contrasting shades so peep the standouts below.

I can think of a couple kitties who have this on their holiday wish lists!

Fancy. I bet lil Annabelle would totally approve of these metallic, jewel-toned eggs – stylishly untraditional bag holders won't be seen on just any leash around town. Grooming Terms You Should Know (Part 3)

Well, the big premiere is finally here! I'm tuning in tonight – will you? Here are some more words you may hear in tonight's episode (provided by Animal Planet):

Scissoring: Groomers use sharp scissors and a metal comb to do finishing trim work on a dog’s coat. Scissoring is the technique groomers use to put the final touches on the coat after clipping and shaving.

Slicker brush: Slicker brushes are square, flat brushes with wire bristles are used to remove mats and tangles in a dog’s coat. Groomers usually follow up this technique with a metal comb to ensure they have removed all knots.

Snap-on combs: Snap-on combs are attachments for professional clippers. They allow groomers to control the depth of the cut and come in different blades that allow groomers to cut hair at different lengths. The attachments let groomers work faster and reduce fatigue.

Stacking: Stacking a professional term used in dog shows. Owners must position, or “stack,” dogs according to official guidelines when they are reviewed by judges. A “free stack” is a term used to describe when the dog positions itself.

Styptic powder: Styptic powder is a tool used when groomers cut a dog’s nails. A vein, called the quick, runs inside the dog’s nails. If groomers cut too close to the quick they use styptic powder to instantly stop any bleeding. Groomers trim a dog’s nails so they do not split or get caught on anything. Some groomers will also paint the dog’s nails.

FuzzyNation Handbags Take on Pup Chic Shape

So I'm not entirely convinced the makers of the FuzzyNation Handbags ever imagined pups would be carried in their bags, but it would certainly be a sight to behold.

The bags, which range in cost from $130 to $180, are made of metallic leather or faux alligator fabric and come with an adjustable leather strap. Now I know many of you love your pooches – and toting them around – would you substitute one of these bags on a dogs-not-welcome excursion?

Kitty a Go-Go: Spoiled Sweet or Spoiled Rotten?

Would the Kitty a Go-Go make your kitty a go go inside or a go go in the other direction? Typically costing over $100, this item's on a sale ending today for $99.97. The price seems a bit steep to me, but it would be good for those cats who are turned off by the automatic systems like the Cat Genie. It's fairly easy to clean with a metal sifter rake that pulls the litter to the front of the tray making it easy to lift the used portions right out. It comes in three interchangeable tops (sold separately) . . . I think this speckled one would fit nicely into a retro home, but are you sold?
