Umm, try telling North that "petting is passé!" I know it's sweet to treat a pet to a massage and I definitely liked Maryjean's tips on different tempos and the need to speak to a pet but, that's not where the video magic (mystery?) really comes in. When she started singing, I wondered what my dog would do if I crooned him a tune. I'm certainly no songstress so, if he could cover his ears, he probably would - do you create songs for pets swapping in their name for the normal lyrics?

While I can't say North has ever had a stone massage like this lucky smooshy, I bet he'd love it. . . . if he sat still long enough, that is.

Not as unusual as you may think, many shops will offer "facials" or "puppasage" – and remember that fancy jacuzzi? – for stressed pets. While my budget demands that I do this myself, if money was no object, I'd love to treat North to a "pet relaxation session" - what pampering would your dog or cat most love to receive?

To the Rescue: Doggie Massage for Beginners

Today's day two of the Chinese New Year and I just realized that it is often celebrated as the birthday of all dogs! In addition to the feasts, it's a great day to be extra kind to pooches. I love to suggest food and goodies for your pets, but I don't have the time to make a special stop on my way home from work tonight . . . and I had to share this with you before I left. When I thought about my favorite treat, I instantly thought massage which is my favorite way to pamper myself on my birthday. And yay! I found some tips for how you can turn petting a pet into a mini, gentle massage. As with anything else, if you pet struggles, stop! He's supposed to be enjoying himself. Ready to get started, then read more.

Start out by scratching your pooch gently behind his ears before slowly moving to cheeks, under his chin, around the nose, between the eyes, and up on top of his head.
Next, gently rub each ear between thumb and forefinger. Repeat working smoothly from base to tip.
Then, use middle three fingers to slowly move over neck, shoulder, and chest in small, circular patterns. Move down each leg as well.
Finish up with a "walk" down his spine with your thumb and index finger on each side of his vertebrae. Move from base of neck to base of tail. Give him a big cuddle and you're done!

See? I'm not the only one that feels like getting a massage after a long day at work. Killer Whales get creative in the ocean, using sea kelp and stones for a nice, exfoliating, and moisturizing self rubdown. Thankfully, they don't have to pay the $160 that I would pay for the equivalent here on land! Lucky.

Bare Bones: Brush Buddy

What dog doesn't like the after-bath towel massage? I know North looooves it, almost as if it's the reward for being good during bath time. But, as much as he likes getting pampered, the brush can get confused for a chew toy and doesn't quite cut it like the whole towel thing. The good news for him is that I found the Brush Buddy ($30), a brush that stimulates your pup's coat and replicates those soothing towel rubdowns that come after baths. I'm seriously considering a purchase, not only cause North would dig it for the massage, but because his sanity would dig it, too! To see why, just read more.

The rubber bristles attract hairs like a magnet, so it would help reduce the need for vacuuming (not North's fave) and minimize vacuum freak outs, since I can wipe down the couch with the Brush Buddy instead.The Brush Buddy is made like a towel, but ergonomic and easier to handle. Plus, terry cloth helps to absorb any water he may have picked up on our rainy day walks, or rolling around at the dog park. North's coat can stay shiny and healthy . . . and so can my new couch. Sounds like a perfect combo!
