The Scoop: Progressive's Progressive Policy

Remember North's cute carseat? Keeping pets secured in your car is very important - it prevents accidents if they decide to crawl somewhere they shouldn't and also helps you concentrate on the road, not on them! If you do get into a crash, and your pet gets hurt, paying for pooch's resulting health-care costs is entirely up to you. That's no longer the case for Progressive members – they've added a pet-friendly perk to their plans. For no additional charge, their customers can get a $500 benefit if a pet is injured in a car accident. This plan (which has been officially in place since Sept. 6) includes liability coverage for any pets that are hurt in a crash other than the insured's animals – so there's no additional need to set up your pet or worry if you're transporting a furry friend for your friend. As a bonus, you can get discounted rates on pet insurance from their site as well!

Does Your Pet Have Health Insurance?

I know it might seem silly to non-animal lovers – with so many humans without insurance of their own – but pet insurance is out there, available, and useful in some situations. If you have a purebred dog that can be prone to more (known) health problems, investing in insurance may be a smart move for her health and your financial future. I've heard one too many horror stories about owners neglecting to go for checkups, or opting out of necessary care their pets need because they can't afford the treatment. It's a sad cycle that affects humans and animals alike.

The Pet Ate WHAT?! This Year's Most Unusual Insurance Claims

Dogs (and cats!) eat the darndest things. I've rounded up and surveyed several inedible snacks but these take the cake. Seriously.

Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) named the oddest claims they've gotten each month for the last year and will award the winner the first ever Hambone Award. In case you missed this famous case, that's named after the pooch who got stuck in the fridge . . . and helped himself to the whole Thanksgiving ham while waiting to be found.

Top 10 Insurance Claims For Dogs and Cats

Dogs will eat just about anything (as we saw earlier this week) but what about their kitty cousins? Once again, Veterinary Pet Insurance took a look at the claims they got last year – these top 10 lists account for close to 25 percent of all canine and feline medical claims received in 2008! Unsurprisingly, the more repetitive or chronic illnesses topped the list – after all, continuing care will require continual trips to a doc.

It's important to note that most of the top pet conditions will bring about a noticeable change in the behavior or appearance of a furry friend. Just another reason to take note of any lumps, bumps, sores, cuts, and unusual odors or behaviors in your pets, and react accordingly. Check out the top claims when you read more.

Will the Top 10 Dog and Cat Names From 2009 Surprise You?

Could this be an extension of Twilight mania?! Hard to say for sure but, for the first time in years, Bella has replaced Max as the most popular dog name from 2009.

Like they've done in year's past, Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) crunched numbers for all their insured pets - more than 475,000! - finding that Bella beat out the number two by over 400 dogs. (Note: Edward and Jacob are still nowhere to be found in the top 10.)

Cute cat, right? Look closely to see something poking out of that lil mouth - the kitty not only has a tooth coming out on top, "Snag L. Tooth" has the number one wackiest cat name chosen from VPI Pet Insurance's database of over 470,000 insured pets!

According to owner, Alison Reppel they started referring to him by Snags, "not only because it describes him physically but also because it suited his personality. He gets into little snags all around the house, knocking over pots and pans or ripping apart any cardboard that we may leave sitting around.” Ha!
