Name That Movie: Horse Edition

What little girl doesn't love horse movies? I know I did when I was young (who am I kidding, I still love them!), and so did my fellow Sugar Staffers. I asked them to send me their favorite movies that star horses (or ones where horses play a big part in the film), and we came up with a pretty big list of must-sees for any horse fan. Now it's time for you to find out how well you know your equine flicks in this quiz!

I knew you guys were holding out on me! Meet Papa - an eight year old Thoroughbred. Finally, a pony makes an appearance on Pet Pic of the Day!

Congrats to Papa and Lauren3185 for being chosen as our Pet Pic of the Day! Submit your favorite photos of your pets - big or small - to our Pet Pics group for a chance to see them on the pages of PetSugar. Need some help getting started? I'll tell you how to upload your photos when you read more.

I know this looks like a lot of steps, but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze!

First of all, join the Pet Pics group.
Click the pink "Share" menu on the top left side of the page.
Choose "Photos" and “Upload Photos."
Give your Gallery a “Title.”
Fill in the “Body” with details about your pet.
Click “Groups and Privacy" just below the "Search Title" box.
Choose the audience for your story to “Pet Pics!” in the dropdown menu.
Change channel to “Pets.”
Fill in tag field with relevant tags.
Don't forget to include your pet's name!
Click “I’m done” to submit content.

So join the Pet Pics group and share photos of your adorable pets! Yours just might end up on the PetSugar homepage.

Ever Been Horseback Riding?

When glancing through a friend's recent vacay pictures, I spotted a couple of her and her boyfriend riding horses on a beach. (This is not her.) Anyway, we were chatting and she shared it was her first time horseback and that she was a bit scared at first . . . but loved it in the end.

Some of my fondest childhood memories include horses, and my informal Sugar HQ survey found that there were plenty of people who shared my interest and others who've never seen a pony up close – how about you?

Horse Therapy Helps Boy With Rare Disease

Obviously, I love animals! And I believe that they contain a special ability to help us heal – whether it's dogs, cats, or even horses! This time, our pony pals are taking the spotlight by helping disabled children, especially one boy stricken with extremely rare disease in the UK. The disease is called Chromosome 8 deletion (no super scientific name since there are only five cases in the world) that hinders a patient's ability to walk and talk. So far, a program offering "Hippotherapy" has been able to help 3-year-old Dyfan Wynne learn how to do just that!

Being offered at the Clwyd Special Riding Centre for the Disabled in the UK, Hippotherapy is a form of therapeutic horseback riding that allows special-needs children to learn how to use their limbs to sit, kneel, stand, and walk. Dyfan arrived at the center unable to perform these basic tasks, but after six months, he is joining in on vaulting competitions, and is even considering training for Dressage!

Netherlands Takes Gold in Equestrian Dressage Freestyle

If you haven't been keeping up with the Olympics, you can check out all of the goodies here. But one of my favorite events (naturally) is Equestrian Dressage Freestyle. Anky van Grunsven, and her beautiful 14-year-old horse Salinero took home the gold in the event that was completed on Tuesday.

What is Dressage? It's a form of performance that shows the horse's athletic ability, grace, and form. Often described as a "Horse Ballet" it truly is a joy to watch. Horse and rider must perform tasks like trot, canter, half pass, and canter pirouettes (a full 360 degree turn) with minimal directional aids, and do it all choreographed to music. Sorta like So You Think You Can Dance, but with horses! I was able to TiVo the broadcast, and was totally taken by the beauty of the winning team. Congrats to the winners!
