Where Will Your Pet Be Christmas Morning?

Going home for the holidays gets a little tricky when you're the parent of a pet of any kind. While some small animals like rabbits, birds, fish, and hamsters are fine on their own for a night or two (assuming you have an auto-feeder set up), larger creatures like cats and dogs require more attention and a sitter or caretaker when you're away.

Of course, if you do decide to take your pet on a plane, train, or automobile make sure you check their rules and regulations before you arrive and purchase special traveling equipment like this rolly pet carrier. You don't want to have unexpected, unhappy surprises . . . and have to turn back at the gate. For domestic travelers, I think this effort is 100 percent worth it – but what about you?

On the Ball: Advent Tree-at For Pets

When I saw the Littlest Pet Shop Advent Calendar for kids on lilsugar, I was instantly motivated! Being a fairly crafty gal, I decided to make an advent calendar for my lil' guy, North. I stopped off at a hardware store after work for some creative inspiration and was actually able to conceptualize and make this calendar from items I purchased or had lying around my house. It was so easy to make that when I sat down to work at the beginning of last night's Gossip Girl episode, by the end, I was done! To make this advent calendar you will need the following items:

One sheet of posterboard
Green wrapping paper or cellophane (note: if you've got green posterboard, you can eliminate this step!)
Writing utensils: a pen or pencil and marker
Scissors
Tape
Glue gun or stapler
26 foil cupcake liners
25 yummy treats

To assemble it:

Fold a piece of posterboard in half lengthwise and draw a tree with the middle of it on the seam (so it opens to a mirror image).
Attach wrapping paper to the blank side with glue or tape, flip over, and cut out the tree shape.

Fold and flatten 25 silver cupcake liners in half and number from 1–25.
Seal the cupcake pockets with two drops of hot glue (or a stapler) leaving enough space to slide the treat inside later. If you're using small snacks, you can stick one in now and staple . . . but let glue dry completely before adding snacks if you are using the glue gun.
Attach the cupcake pockets to the tree shape with glue or staples.

Slide in one treat inside each little pocket.
Cut out a star shape from the remaining cupcake liner and tape to the top.
Cut out a trunk from the posterboard scraps and tape to the bottom.

Now you're ready to hang it up! Be quick about it - if you make this project on the floor as I did, your pets may try to sneak a sample!

The-Day-After Turkey Omelet

1 egg
1-2 tbsp. mashed potatoes
1/2 cup diced cooked turkey meat
1/2 cup cooked vegetables, chopped
1/4 cup desired cheese, grated

Heat a medium-sized pan with a small amount of olive oil. Whisk together the egg and potatoes. Spread in pan. Place turkey and veggies on top in even layers. Cover; simmer until egg cooks and the mixture is warm. Sprinkle cheese on top, then cook a few more minutes until cheese is melted and egg is golden brown. Let cool. Cut into wedges. Store in refrigerator.

T'giving Tip: Keep Pets Entertained

North has been invited to Thanksgiving dinner this Thursday and we can't wait! I've begun preparations by freezing beg-prevention peanut butter into two Kong toys and purchasing a new Tyler the Talking Turkey that gobble gobbles... no joke. Enlist animal-loving guests to pay extra attention to your furry friends (usually kids are all too happy to be on doggie or kitty duty) and consider taking a family walk or having extra outdoor playtime before the meal. It will wear out your pets and help people work off the calories before they're consumed! When dinner's about to begin, give your pet the exciting, new toy or treat to occupy paws and mouth... plus keep him away from the table!

T'giving Tip: A Taste Is All It Takes

Introducing large quantities of rich "people food" into a pet's diet on Thanksgiving is bad for their tummies! In fact, some typical holiday fare such as turkey bones or turkey skin should never be fed to pets. Animals can choke on bone splinters and have trouble digesting fatty parts of the turkey such as the skin with all its soaked-in salt and grease. If you must treat a pet to your food, try offering a small taste of cooked, unseasoned veggies like carrots or green beans or a bit of white meat turkey. Because dessert is my favorite meal of the day, I treat North to an apple slice or small spoonful of canned pumpkin (not pie filling) as his special dessert.

Before company comes (or you hit the road), stock up on some special, safe treats for your pets like these Turkey & Cranberry Delights.
