Piglet Born With Cute Heart Spots on His Coat

It looks like the adorable Chihuahua puppy born with a heart shaped marker on his coat has some new competition. Less than two weeks ago a Gloucester Old Spot piglet with unique heart markings was born on a farm in the UK. What's his name? Why, Valentine of course! How can you not fall in love with that?

Meet Kokoro-chan, the Heart-Marked Cousin of Love-kun

It seems like only yesterday we were oohing and ahhing over the birth of lil Love-kun. Now check out this other 3-day-old Chihuahua, Kokoro-chan. With a telltale heart shape, this pup has the same father (Heart-kun) but a different mom - so these babes are cousins in cute.

Now, we already know that this marking is not that unusual, and I can think of a couple other pups with identifying markings (like Licorice's "L" shape). Sadly my pooch just has an splotch on his neck, but compare these two love marks - Love-kun's in the front and Kokoro-chan just behind - in a closeup shot when you read more.

Danger: Clean Up Baking Soda (or Baking Powder) Immediately

When hinting at a handy, DIY cleanup alternative, I stressed that North was nowhere near the baking soda sprinkled out and that it was cleaned up before he got a sneak sniff.

To understand why these substances are dangerous, I've gotta get a little scientific here so bear with me. Baking soda is another name for sodium bicarbonate. Baking powder, on the other hand, combines that sodium bicarbonate with an acid such as cream of tartar, sodium aluminum sulphate or calcium acid phosphate. Both function as leavening agents in baked goods; they create a gas which causes doughs to rise.

If you're not yet getting a mental image of the dangers, if your dog eats a large amount of these powders, it creates mayhem in the tummy with an electrolyte imbalance which can result in muscle spasms or even congestive heart failure. To be safe, keep both the containers of baking soda and baking powder out of pups' reach (although baked in small amounts into treats is less dangerous), and immediately clean up if spilled near a nosy nose.

Don't worry, these pics are from the set of a music video - no doggies were actually harmed! Songstress Alicia Keys, recorded "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart" featuring this furry scene from her upcoming fourth album on Friday.

The pooch sports a couple collars with a super-chunky, braided-orange one on top - Get a similar, slimmer styles in tangerine (chocolate, white or aqua) from Wagwear for $22 and a matching leash ($34), too. And, of course, peep at the rest of the pics below.

It's Feral Cat Day - Have You Ever Seen One?

Today's National Feral Cat Day to honor those felines that live in the wild. Before you start wishing they all could be rescued and adopted, know that many of these kitties are better-accustomed to living on their own terms in the wild. In areas around the country where this is common, Trap-Neuter-Release plans are enforced to keep a handle on the population.

On a personal note, these kitties have a special place in my heart from my college days, when they were frequently found, fed, and even adopted out whenever possible right on campus. Our pals over at Paw Nation dedicated several posts to this cause, including an interview with comedian Marc Maron about his feral cats:

"You know, I'm not a cat guy, but I'm a 'my cat' guy. If I go to your house, I'll pretend to like your cats, but secretly I'm thinking what a fat, stupid, ugly cat you have. That cat's an indoor cat; my cats are animals. Your cat can't even muster up the gumption to play with that fake mouse you bought it. It's days away from hanging itself on its scratching post. Or dying of ennui."

Don't worry, he's kidding. (I think.) Ever spotted a feral feline out and about?

Luk Chai Dribbles His Soccer-Playing Pachy Self Into My Heart

A soccer playing elephant?! Now I've heard of everything. Although his version is more of a dribble, dribble, smush, Luk Chai looks rather cute no matter what he's doing.

This baby Asian Elephant was born last month at Sydney's Taronga Zoo - home to another adoro pachyderm, hippo Monifa - and is already drawing quite the crowds. Keepers have equipped the babe with this ginormous soccer ball, but he needs a bit more practice to get the hang of the game. World Cup 2010 for Australia, perhaps?
