Is Requiring Makeup at Work Sexist?

At 24 years old, Brit Melanie Stark embraces her youthful complexion by forgoing makeup. Unfortunately for her, the British department store she worked at has a two-page ladies' dress code that requires makeup far beyond a little mascara and lip gloss. Due to her refusal to ditch her natural look, Melanie was sent home twice from work, offered a makeup tutorial, and eventually, she claims, forced to quit.

The Harrods employee handbook says female workers must wear "full make-up at all times: base, blusher, full eyes (not too heavy), lipstick, lip liner and gloss are worn at all times and maintained discreetly." Since service employees like Melanie come face to face with the public, Harrods might defend its face regulations as furthering a glamorous image. And it isn't the only retail store to have a controversial dress code including makeup regulations. Across the pond, American Apparel has dictates on makeup, but it takes the opposite stance, requiring a natural look. At American Apparel there must be no expressive eye shadow, blush, or lip gloss, no eye liner, and no heavy makeup in general.

In addition to requiring full makeup, Harrods's female dress code also mandates earrings (one in each ear) and bans visible tattoos. How does this compare to the rules for Harrods's male employees? Men cannot have sideburns longer than midear nor wider than one inch. Piercings and visible tattoos are banned, and deodorant is explicitly required for the gentlemen. Comparing the men's rules to the extensive makeup rules for women, do you think Harrods's dress code unfairly regulates the appearance of its female employees vs. the men?

The famed department store just added The Pet Spa for "canine chic and feline sleek!" Nestled in London's Harrods is a fourth floor furry retreat that boasts human-worthy services like full body massages, mud baths, blueberry and vanilla facials, and deluxe pedicures.

If your pets are hungry, they can just stop off at Lily's Kitchen for lunch later on!

Pups Go All Out for Harrods Pet-a-Porter Fashion Show

Over in England, there's a tradition at Harrods that I look forward to each year - in addition to all the fashion sold inside, once a year the store hosts a Pet-a-Porter Fashion show with furry friends showing off chic clothing, cute costumes, and more . . . alongside human model counterparts. Elizabeth Hurley: Unlikely Organic Farmer

Off the top of my head I can't remember the last time I've seen British bombshell Elizabeth Hurley on screen, but for good reason - she's packed everything up Green Acres style. The former actress has left the high life of London to live on a 400-acre organic farm in Gloucestershire where she shares space with cattle, poultry, sheep, and pigs.

She's not stopping there either. This week Hurley launched an organic snacks line in conjunction with Harrods using ingredients straight from her farm. All the organic snacks are low-calorie (100 or less), low-fat and include beef jerky, oat bars, and fruit snacks.

The 44 year old married mother of one couldn't be happier trudging through the mud in a pair of Wellingtons and says that leaving London was the only way to give her son a healthy upbringing free from paparazzi "I would be bursting into tears and just be so angry. There is something about motherhood that makes you very protective of anyone coming too near your child, and the paparazzi did things like take pictures of him nude on the beach and put them online. It was disgusting, disgraceful."

Hurley says that the inspiration for her organic line came from her own experiences with fad diets. “It’s compulsory portion control. I’ve never been able to chop a Jaffa Cake in half and just eat one piece,” she said.

In the Spotlight: Harrods, Puppies, and Kim Cattrall

I was super excited to spot these furballs in the arms of Kim Cattrall at the opening of the annual Summer Sale at Harrods yesterday because, ummm, when am I not excited for puppies?! At first, I was a bit baffled why these cutie doxie models were involved at all but my eagle eyes discovered that she's actually seen here in the pet department – check out those red toy squeaky slippers in the background!

This department store has some of my fave merch for our furry friends – in fact, when I spent all that time in London, I picked up a cute tshirt for my dog that he still wears to this day!

Harrods' In-Store LED Light Display Tantalizes the Tastebuds

If you've ever been to London, visiting Harrods - one of the world's most famous department stores - is an experience in itself. Well now there's something else to tempt your eyes in this gigantic department store. . . an array of 3D-lighting window displays created by The Anemix - a Chilean lighting company.

Cool Hunting discusses how this six-panel lighting system was created for Harrods' in-store "Senses" campaign to mimic the human senses. The window displays will be up until March 28, when the Senses campaign officially ends. Have a peek at more images below.

Lily Allen cuddles this super cute pup at the opening of the Harrods Winter sale today. This lil one does not belong to her, but she does have a much-loved pet of her very own who was dognapped from her walker earlier this year . . . but, thankfully, returned safe and sound. She wasn't the only celebrity to have a pup taken from her in 2007, so test your knowledge of the other newsmakers.

The Scoop: Not the World's Most Expensive Collar

As part of the annual dog fashion show, 'Pet-à-Porter,' at London's Harrods department store, Ritchie here gets to sport one of the world's priciest collars. Ringing in at 500,000 pounds (that's over $1 million!), it's set with several two-carat, Dali web cut diamonds, along with a stunning, slightly larger center stone – totaling just under 15-carats altogether.

It's beautiful, and rather manly as far as diamonds go, but not the world's most expensive. The priciest dog collar I've ever spotted is the 52-carat 'Amour Amour' collar from I Love Dogs Diamonds. With 1,600 hand-set diamonds and a seven-carat centerpiece, it's worth a jaw-dropping $1.8 million.
