Meet This Record Breaking Zoo Babe!

Looks like this is another animal whose tongue is not pink, but that's not what makes her special - she's the eleventh kid calf in her family! Twenty-year-old Denisa gave birth six days ago at the Safari Park Zoo in Ramat Gan, Israel, setting the world record for giraffe babies born in captivity! Although the lil one's still nameless, she is clearly comfortable turning her nose up and sticking her tongue out at the spotlight.

Curious How to Transport a Giraffe?

I love giraffes but even with all the things I do know about these guys, I never gave much thought about how you'd get the world's tallest animal from point A to point B . . . if walking was not an option! Now I've got my answer as this animal recently relocated from the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand to Taronga's Western Plains Zoo in Australia. How did Ntombi make the big trip? Why by a huuuuge boat of course, followed by a hitching a lift from this crane as he arrives at Sydney's Port Botany today.

Video: A Masai Giraffe Is Born . . . And It's Caught on Tape!

Just like that video of Giant Pandas being born, quick thinking cameramen similarly snatched the birth of this rare Masai giraffe at Safari West in Santa Rosa, CA. Entering the world on Sept. 3 to proud mama, Jamala, and first-time dad, Tufani, the 130-pound babe is still nameless. The Scoop: Pregnant Giraffe Dies at San Francisco Zoo!

I'm saddened to report that one of the giraffes at the San Francisco Zoo passed away at 12:15 p.m. yesterday, suffering from cardiac and respiratory arrest. Gezi (mama to that cutie pie, Barbro, we saw born back in February) was one of six long-necked creatures in the city. The necropsy results came in Wednesday afternoon, and the zoo just announced that the mom to Terrance (born on May 18, 2006) and recent babe, Barbro, (Feb. 25) was in her first trimester at the time of death! According to local news reports, it also showed Gezi had enlarged lymph nodes, inflammation within her gastrointestinal tract, and more than 100 "suspicious black masses" throughout her body. Although the zoo did not elaborate what those masses were, they will perform more tests to confirm the exact cause of death of this pregnant giraffe. In the meantime, the other giraffes (one adult male, two adult females, and two calves, one male, and one female) remain in good condition.

The Scoop: Baby Giraffe With Rare Medical Condition Dies

When my mom alerted me to this baby giraffe born in Mississippi last Monday with weak ankles, I was intrigued. I loooove giraffes! The unnamed babe was born with a rare medical condition with weak flexor tendons in both hind legs. Zookeepers were monitoring her process over the last six days, bandaging her back ankles to help her stand up and to prevent abrasions and infections. Sadly, though, the tiny 87-pound calf died yesterday. Officials will perform a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death – see a couple more pictures when you read more.

This Giraffe Cutie Is Only Two Days Old!

It's a baby girl! San Francisco Zoo resident giraffe, Gezi, gave birth to this lil one on Monday morning. The new arrival provided quite a shock to zookeepers who found her when they arrived at 8 a.m., but predict her actual birth fell between 3 and 6 a.m.

I learned I wasn't the only one who loves the world's tallest land animal, and I can't wait to stop by and check her out in person. At last update, the unnamed lass can be seen outside during the sunny days we've been having lately. She's being monitored to make sure she starts nursing, if not, they'll have to resort to bottle feeding. I can't wait 'til the 150-pound calf gets a cute name - any suggestions?
