Wild Animals Need Furs

Maybe you were doing some Spring cleaning in grandmother's attic and you uncovered an old fur coat. Now I'm betting most animal lovers wouldn't choose to wear it, but thrifting or selling the pelt isn't the best solution. Even if you donate the proceeds, do you really want to encourage someone else to wear it either?

Instead, ship the coat to the Humane Society's Coats For Cubs program for a tax deductible donation. Upon receiving old furs, organization staffers cut up and distribute to comfort a variety of animals in wildlife rehabilitation efforts – I know I'd feel better having orphaned creatures snuggling or playing with this for their own feel better moment as well!

The Scoop: Nigel Barker Makes A (Fashion) Statement Against Seal Fur

With the fashion industry taking the Cool vs. Cruel anti-fur movement to heart, it seems that we're finally making some headway on the realization that cruelty for the sake of couture isn't the best idea. Plus, when celebs like Hayden Panettiere make headlines for their causes – like her involvement in Save The Whales, Again! – it puts a blazing spotlight on issues that are important to our world.

Just like Hayden, Nigel Barker, one of Tyra's industry judges on Americas Next Top Model, is taking a stand against March's annual commercial seal hunt (where each year hundreds of thousands of baby seals are hunted and killed for their fur). Traveling to eastern Canada this week, Nigel will be scoping out the baby seals before the hunt begins :

“It is my hope that by witnessing these baby seals in their natural environment we can draw attention to the inhumane slaughter that will occur in a few short weeks,” said Barker. “Every year hundreds of thousands of baby seals are clubbed and shot to death for their fur. Their carcasses are discarded like waste and left on the ice. It is my strong opinion that this is bigger than making a fashion statement. This is about making a life statement. If we call ourselves human we must act humanely.”

If that's not enough, Nigel will be returning to the ice flows of eastern Canada to film and witness the seal hunt in progress. Ultimately, Nigel and The Humane Society hope that the seal fur trade will be banned in Europe, where a majority of the fur is shipped and sold. Vote on "Cool vs. Cruel" Fur-Free Fashion

For the third year in a row, the Humane Society of the US educated fashion students from various Art Institutes about the problems associated with animal fur, including cruelty and false labeling. Then, in perfect Project Runway style, comes their challenge: budding designers are shown four runway designs from fall 2007 that used animal fur, then asked to reinterpret and improve them sans cruelty in a Cool vs. Cruel fashion design contest.

Test your eye for style and pick your winner out of the 16 very original designs. Be sure to vote by October 29 – each person can only vote once so don't keep this contest to yourself. Check back on November 8 when fashion guru Tim Gunn and the rest of the judges announce their picks and the People's Choice winner too!

Combat Unwanted Pet Hair With a Fur Fighter

I've just added a new product to my cleaning arsenal – this Fur Fighter! I already have a lint brush for my clothes, but this tool's shape is perfect for the quick cleaning of my couch (if I don't want to dig out the Dyson, that is). The angled shape and sticky extension made this the only way I could truly tackle the corners and crevices of my couch 'cause the round lint brush couldn't fit into those angles as well as it cleaned my wool coat. I don't want to share the embarrassing amount of cookie crumbs and stubborn pet hair that I picked up, so you'll have to take my word for it . . . but I've printed out a web coupon for $2 off when I go back for more!

Pet Dye Jobs: Cool or Cruel?

I was kind of at a loss when I saw this pic of a Westie outside of the Republican National Convention – talk about a serious dye job! I'm hoping that the owner of this pooch used a pet safe dye on his dog, since using human grade hair color, or even food coloring can be super harmful to your pets' skin!

Although I would never do this to North, what do you think about dyeing your pet's fur?

Sienna and Bess Have a Girls' Day Out

Just two gals out for a Fall stroll, nothing to see here. Oh, who I am kidding, I'm happy to see so much of Sienna and Bess stateside, with her favorite red leash! I'm missing Porgy, but are you secretly hoping he's home with Jude?
Whether or not they're sharing custody, or if she's just not a fan of juggling two leashes, I hope her other dog has an equally fancy leash - while a vegetable-dyed, Eco-Leather Flat Stitch Lead ($26) in red looks smashing against dark fur, I think the lighter-colored pup would look dashing in a forest green hue to make the color pop!

You've heard of Feng Shui, right? It's the idea that the Chi (or energy) that flows through your home should be balanced. If you are a believer in the practice, author Paula Brown says the same principal can be applied to your pets! Just like Feng Shui, Fur Shui works off of the ancient Chinese principal that energy areas in your home correspond with a color. For example the health and knowledge area is yellow, and the family section is green. So theoretically, if you tie a yellow ribbon on your doggie's crate, he will have good health! And if your kitty is having socialization or family issues, put a green bell on him to nurture healthy family chi. Although Fur Shui is not a substitute for regular veterinary care, I'm not opposed to new ways to make sure North and I are in total energy harmony.
