Will Your Dog Fetch Snowballs?

North's happy to announce we're in the middle of a veritable heat wave in SF since he's not a cold weather fan! If you live in a colder climate where your snow bunnies can run and play (and hopefully pee) in the white stuff, try tossing them a snowball. Say you don't have the similarly-shaped toy at the ready, would your fetch loving pets chase a snowball in a pinch?

Are Your Pets Frenzied Fetchers?

North would definitely chase what I throw (or stomp) for him, but it often turns into tug o' war/keep-away to get it back to re-toss. How about your pets? Do they freely fetch, sometimes test it out, or simply wait for you to bring it back like a civilized person?

Never Throw a Ball Again . . .

It's like tennis or batting practice . . . for your pooch. Using that similar technology, dogs who just can't get enough of fetch deserve GoDogGo ($149.95). Think about this sad story actually . . . after a while your arm will inevitably get tired, and I'm willing to bet that's gonna be long before the pup gets tired of chasing a ball. You'll feel guilty, there will likely be much nose nudging of your leg, possibly a bit of barking and definitely some annoyance on both parts. Then, to the rescue, (and minus the red cape) comes this machine to dispense tennis balls every seven or 15 seconds in automatic mode, magically shooting them for either 15 or 30 feet. The machine holds up to 15 balls and comes with a nifty remote control to give slower or faster pooches a run for your money. The GoDogGo will work for about five hours continuously on batteries, but if you've got outdoor outlets the fun never ends. The only downside is you'll still have to reload the bucket yourself until you can use the included instructions to train your pooch to do it himself.

This Ball Keeps the Fetch Going, Even in the Dark

Fetch and repeat is a favorite game for many frisky pups. Now even though his mouth waters when he sees the ball (and will happily run wherever you toss), it can be hard to continue play after nightfall. But not with this toy.

To the Rescue: Choosing a Fetch Stick

When out in the park with a pup, it can be necessary to improvise on pet toys. Thankfully, most dogs who like to fetch will happily fetch most anything... especially sticks. Search for a stick with a width and length that's both small enough for your pooch to easily handle, but also big enough that the entire stick can't fit into his mouth.

On one visit to NYC's Tompkins Square Park, I watched a beagle happily fetching sticks (in this case, more like twigs) when, all of a sudden, the pup didn't come back and began alternately running in circles, rubbing his head on the ground, and pawing his face. The owner rushed over to the dog and, thankfully, realized what was wrong. He stuck a hand into his pet's mouth (while pushing lips over the teeth to prevent accidental biting), swept his middle fingers across the top of the dog's mouth and brought them out with a stick. While I am not advocating sticking your hands into any pet's mouth – especially a frantic one – please be careful when playing fetch with small objects that could get lodged, or splinter to get lodged, in his mouth or throat – you don't want to panic with an equally panicking pooch!

Summer's officially over. Sigh. I like to think North and I are best suited for dry-land adventures (or boat trips, of course), but this Boston Terrier gives me hope. Guido not only bravely dives off the dock and swims to fetch a toy, he then climbs a ladder at the end! Impressive. I'll be grabbing a life vest and luring North into the water next year!

The Scoop: Is This Actually the World's Oldest Dog?

While Chanel was crowned the "World's Oldest Dog" by the Guinness Book of World Records just months before her death, news has come of another elderly pooch that could be the new (rightful) titleholder. This is Penny photographed on Sept. 4 in Ronsberg, Germany - according to her owner, Verena Wulf, she's 25! While it's trickier to verify age with unregistered, non-purebred pups for lack of records, I'm curious to know how her story plays out - do you think this pooch will soon get a cake and a press conference, too, or are you still satisfied with Chanel? Weigh in below!
